Multimodal benefits of VR-based treadmill training in multiple sclerosis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Motor and cognitive impairments in multiple sclerosis are progressive in nature and impair independence and overall quality of life. Although the use of a treadmill improves gait and endurance, there is limited benefit in regard to cognitive motor integration. Virtual reality offers multi-sensory, task-oriented environments that can enhance engagement and combine motor and cognitive rehabilitation. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review assessed the effectiveness of VR-enhanced treadmill training versus conventional treadmill training on gait, endurance, balance, and cognitive-motor p

Integrative cognitive neuropsychological program emphasizing brain response to enhance inhibitory control among substance abusers at the alternative rehabilitation communities in Eastern Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: Inhibitory control (IC) deficit among substance abusers is a potential consequence of detrimental drug use and can also serve as a risk factor for drug-seeking behaviors, compromising substance abuse treatment and leading to drug relapse. This study examined the efficacy of an integrative cognitive neuropsychological program emphasizing brain response to enhance inhibitory control (ICNIC intervention program) among substance abusers. METHODS: A total of 30 substance abusers were recruited and randomly assigned to either an ICNIC training group and a non-training control group. T

A randomized controlled trial of training of affect recognition (TAR) in schizophrenia shows lasting effects for theory of mind.

Schizophrenia is characterized by social cognitive impairments that predict functioning. Social cognitive training aims to target these impairments. Although it can improve the targeted social cognitive domain, it is unclear if the training generalizes to non-targeted domains and to functioning, with lasting effects. This randomized controlled trial examined the effect of a targeted facial affect recognition training program, Training of Affect Recognition (TAR), in persons with schizophrenia. Individuals with schizophrenia were randomized to receive treatment as usual and TAR (n = 24) or trea…

Enhancing sleep after training improves memory in down syndrome model mice.

Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of the third copy of chromosome 21. DS is associated with cognitive disabilities, for which there are no drug therapies. In spite of significant behavioral and pharmacological efforts to treat cognitive disabilities, new and continued efforts are still necessary. Over 60% of children with DS are reported to have sleep apnea that disrupt normal sleep. Normal and adequate sleep is necessary to maintain optimal cognitive functions. Therefore, we asked whether improved quality and/or quantity of sleep could improve cogn

Early-life cognitive intervention preserves brain function in aged TgF344-AD rats with sex-specific effects.

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by progressive cognitive decline, and its effects are mitigated by cognitive reserve. We investigated whether long-term cognitive stimulation, initiated before amyloid deposition, preserves brain function in male and female TgF344-AD rats. Transgenic and wild-type (WT) rats underwent cognitive training or remained untrained. Resting-state fMRI assessed functional connectivity, the novel object recognition test evaluated memory, and molecular analyses examined synaptic plasticity, inhibitory signaling, and microglial reactivity. At baseline, females showed g…

Shining Light into Adolescent HIV Neuroplasticity: A Study of the Prefrontal Cortex Using Functional Near Infrared Spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) crosses the blood-brain barrier, compromising cortical networks and cognition. Neuropharmacological intervention in the form of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) does not reverse cognitive decline in pediatric and adolescent HIV. In search of options to enhance cognition in affected adolescents, we evaluated the effectiveness of attention training. METHODS: The training was evaluated by pairing participants' outcomes on the Stroop Colour Word Test (SCWT), a test of attention and inhibitory control, to brain hemodynamic responses measu

Respiratory and cognitive mediators of treatment change in panic disorder: evidence for intervention specificity.

OBJECTIVE: There are numerous theories of panic disorder, each proposing a unique pathway of change leading to treatment success. However, l … altering either respiration (capnometry-assisted respiratory training) or panic-related cognitions (cognitive training). Changes in respiration (PCO₂, respiration rate), symptom appraisal, and a modality-nonspecific mediator (perceived control) were considered as possible mediators. RESULTS: The reductions in panic symptom severity and panic-related cognitions and …

Physical exercise and cognitive engagement outcomes for mild neurocognitive disorder: a group-randomized pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is considered a risk state for the development of dementia due to Alzheimer's disease. It is also a period in which interventions may be most effective in slowing progression to dementia. Computerized cognitive training and increased physical activity have shown to be among the most promising interventions. However, current evidence from randomized controlled trials comparing cognitive training, physical activity, and an active control is inconsistent. Furthermore, the neural mechanisms underlying these interventions are currently unclear. …

Music Games: Potential Application and Considerations for Rhythmic Training.

Rhythmic skills are natural and widespread in the general population. The majority can track the beat of music and move along with it. These abilities are meaningful from a cognitive standpoint given their tight links with prominent motor and cognitive functions such as language and memory. When rhythmic skills are challenged by brain damage or neurodevelopmental disorders, remediation strategies based on rhythm can be considered. For example, rhythmic training can be used to improve motor performance (e.g., gait) as well as cognitive and language skills. Here, we review the games readily avai

Neural change following different memory training approaches in very preterm born children - A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: There is mixed evidence regarding neural change following cognitive training. Brain activation increase, decrease, or a combination of both may occur. We investigated training-induced neural change using two different memory training approaches. METHODS: Very preterm born children (aged 7-12 years) were randomly allocated to a memory strategy training, an intensive working memory practice or a waiting control group. Before and immediately after the trainings and the waiting period, brain activation during a visual working memory task was measured using fMRI and cognitive performanc…

Cognitive Rehabilitation as a Possible Therapeutic Approach in Patients with Blepharospasm.

Background/Objectives: Blepharospasm (BSP) is a focal dystonia characterized by involuntary, bilateral spasms of the orbicularis oculi muscle. While botulinum toxin (BoNT) is the standard treatment, cognitive tasks such as reading and writing may exert transient modulatory effects on spontaneous blinking and dystonic spasms. This study investigates the potential of cognitive training, including reading and writing tasks, as a complementary therapeutic approach to BoNT in BSP patients. Methods: A total of 16 BSP patients were randomly assigned to two groups: Group A (n = 6) received cognitive t…
