Role of sex hormones in the reactivation of Toxocara canis larvae in pregnant bitches.

Based on an exhaustive review, a theory was proposed with an immunoendocrine perspective on the reactivation of dormant Toxocara canis larvae in pregnant bitches and their transmission to fetuses through the placenta, or milk and colostrum to puppies. A historical review was carried out on the reactivation of dormant larvae of T. canis in pregnant bitches which suggested that larval reactivation of T. canis is not solely the effect of a single hormone (prolactin) but is the result of a series of events triggered by progesterone, prolactin, and estrogens. In the first third of gestation, proges…

Effect of Dietary Eicosapentaenoic and Docosahexaenoic Fatty Acid Supplementation during the Last Month of Gestation on Fatty Acid Metabolism and Oxidative Status in Charolais Cows and Calves.

Supplementation of low-dose EPA and DHA alters colostrum and milk fatty acid composition through the elevation of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) without affecting milk fat and protein concentrations and oxidative status. Plasma composition in cows was significantly altered, while th …

Prior infection with Bordetella bronchiseptica enhanced colonization but not disease with Streptococcus suis.

Bordetella bronchiseptica and Streptococcus suis are widely distributed swine pathogens. B. bronchiseptica is a primary pathogen and causes atrophic rhinitis and bronchopneumonia. S. suis is a contributing agent to porcine respiratory disease complex and causes systemic diseases including arthritis, meningitis, polyserositis, and septicemia. Colonization with B. bronchiseptica has been associated with increased colonization by other pathogenic bacteria and increased disease severity with viral and bacterial pathogens. It has also been reported to predispose cesarean derived, colostrum deprived…

It was decided to feed only colostrum to the infant and formula feeding was done subsequently because of the risk of the transfer of imatinib to breast milk. Anatomy and Physiology of the Breast during Pregnancy and Lactation.

The mature breast is located within the anterior thoracic wall, lying atop the pectoralis major muscle. Pubertal changes lead to incomplete … to prolactin stimulation. Milk production is inhibited by high estrogen and progesterone levels and colostrum is produced during this time. In the third trimester and then rapidly after birth, these levels decrease, allowing for milk production and eventual let-down to allow for breastfeeding. Most pregnancies cause the areola to darken, the breast to incre …

Turkish Neonatal Society guideline on enteral feeding of the preterm infant.

Early initiation of enteral feeding with the own mother's milk and prevention of postnatal growth failure is the target of nutrition in preterm infants. Together with total parenteral nutrition, mouth care and minimal enteral nutrition is started with colostrum in the very early hours of life in small preterm infants. Expressed mother's milk is given via a gastric tube and gradually increased in accordance with the gestational age/birth weight and the risk factors. For infants born heavier than 1 000 grams, the aim is to reach total enteral feeding at the end of first week, and at the end of t…

Targeted Mutation of NGN3 Gene Disrupts Pancreatic Endocrine Cell Development in Pigs.

However, key ga … ls to qualify the effect of mutation on embryonic lethality. Three live piglets were born, received colostrum and suckled normally, but experienced extreme weight loss over a 24 to 36-hour period requiring humane euthanasia. Immunohistopathology of calf pneumonia induced by endobronchial inoculation with bovine adenovirus 3.

Three 1-week-old and three 3-month-old Holstein calves that had received colostrum were inoculated endobronchially with bovine adenovirus 3 (BAV-3). The gross and histologic lesions in these six infected calves were localized mainly in the right caudal lobe of the lung and were closely associated with the site of the deposition of the inoculum. The pneumonic lesions were severe necrotizing bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and alveolitis, accompanied by infiltration of inflammatory cells and proliferation of type 2 pneumocytes. Intranuclear inclusion bodies, BAV-3 antigen, and virus particles were de…

Animal nutrition and acid-base balance.

In domestic animals, acid-base balance may be influenced by nutrition. The major research effort in this area has been made on the prevention of hypocalcemic postparturient paresis in dairy cows. This disorder is caused by the sudden increase of calcium secretion into the colostrum. The manipulation of the dietary cation-anion difference makes it possible to maintain the cows in metabolic acidosis during the critical period that precedes calving, presumably via a mechanism that involves the strong ion difference in the extracellular fluid. As a consequence the mobilization of calcium is enhanc…

Plasma and tissue levels of digestive regulatory peptides during postnatal development and weaning in the calf.

Changes in the concentrations of cholecystokinin, gastric inhibitory peptide, gastrin, motilin, pancreatic polypeptide, secretin, somatostatin, and vasoactive intestinal peptide in calf plasma and antral, duodenal and/or pancreatic tissues were assessed by radioimmunoassay during postnatal development and after weaning in 50 male Holstein-Friesian calves (randomly distributed into 10 groups of 5 animals each). The calves in the first group were killed at birth while those in 6 other groups were colostrum-fed for 2 days and then milk-fed until 7, 28, 56, 70 or 119 days of age. Those in the rema…

A needle-free intradermal PEDV S protein vaccine elicits protective lactogenic immunity in piglets.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) remains a major threat to the global swine industry, with genotype II (GII) strains causing nearly 10 … ore than four months. High levels of IgG and neutralizing antibodies were detected in the serum and colostrum of vaccinated sows, and piglets born to these sows exhibited only mild or no diarrhea following virulent PEDV challenge. Experimental evaluation of a novel bivalent vaccine against porcine circovirus type 2d and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a newly developed bivalent vaccine against porcine circovirus type 2d (PCV2d) and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. A total of 85 colostrum-fed, conventional 2-week-old pigs derived from sows not previously vaccinated against PCV2 or M. hyopneumoniae were used. The pigs were randomly assigned to seven groups. The bivalent vaccine was administered intramuscularly at 21 days of age according to the manufacturer's instructions. At 49 days of age, pigs in the vaccinated and positive control groups were challenged intranasally with PCV2d or intratrachea…
