Farm worker injuries on Western Cape fruit farms: the role of the lay health worker.

AIM AND METHOD: An exploratory and descriptive study to obtain basic data on the extent, nature, sources and severity of injuries sustained on fruit farms was conducted. The possibility of utilizing lay health workers (LHWs) on farms to document routine information on injuries was also investigated. Descriptive information of all injuries occurring on selected farms, both occupational and other, needing some form of treatment, were documented over a one-year period from June 1999 to May 2000. A purposive non-probability sampling method was used. Forty-eight fruit farms with a history of traine

"Correcting Misinformation is Challenging": Exploring Barriers and Facilitators of Health Care Providers' Responsiveness to Cervical Cancer Screening Literacy Needs of Rural Women Living With HIV in Eastern Uganda.

IntroductionCervical cancer screening literacy among rural women living with HIV (WLHIV), the ability to access, understand, appraise, and apply cervical cancer screening information to use cervical cancer screening services, is affected by individual factors including low educational attainment, low socioeconomic status, poor cervical cancer risk perception, fear, misconceptions, and beliefs, as well as interpersonal, community, and health facility barriers. However, rural public health facilities have limited resources that limit their ability mitigate these challenges. This research identif

Capacity building for cancer prevention and early detection in the Ugandan primary healthcare facilities: Working toward reducing the unmet needs of cancer control services.

BACKGROUND: In 2018, approximately 60,000 Ugandans were estimated to be suffering from cancer. It was also reported that only 5% of cancer patients access cancer care and 77% present with late-stage cancer coupled with low level of cancer health literacy in the population despite a wide coverage of primary healthcare facilities in Uganda. We aimed to contribute to reducing the unmet needs of cancer prevention and early detection services in Uganda through capacity building. METHODS: In 2017, we conducted two national and six regional cancer control stakeholders' consultative meetings. In 2017

The relationship between knowledge of HIV, self-perceived vulnerability and sexual risk behavior among community clinic workers in Chile.

OBJECTIVE: Testing the hypothesis of an association between knowledge and sexual risk behaviour (SRB) amongst community-clinic workers in Chile, explained by the confounding effect of self-perceived vulnerability to HIV. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was analyzed; it was nested within a quasi-experimental study of 720 community-clinic workers in Santiago. The SRB score combined the number of sexual partners and condom use (coded as "high"/"low" SRB). Knowledge of HIV (a 25-item index) was coded as "inadequate"/"adequate" knowledge. Self-perceived vulnerability to HIV was categorised as be

The 'ability' paradigm in vocational rehabilitation: challenges in an Ontario injured worker retraining program.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, a focus on workers' ability, rather than impairment, has guided disability management services. However, a challenge with the notion of 'ability' is identification of the border between ability and inability. This article considers this gray zone of disability management in the case of a workers' compensation vocational retraining program for injured workers in Ontario. METHODS: In-depth interviews and focus groups were conducted with a purposive sample of 71 participants who were directly involved with the vocational retraining process. Workers in the program h

An Age-Adapted Co-Design Methodology for Community Health Research Involving Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes.

INTRODUCTION: Co-design is increasingly used in health and social care research, but its application with older adults in community settings may raise methodological challenges. Age-adapted co-design methods are needed to support meaningful participation. METHODS: This study developed and examined an age-adapted co-design methodology in a community setting involving older adults with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A qualitative approach was adopted, which included exploratory interviews, design probes, clarification interviews, a co-design workshop and evaluation interviews. A total of 24 p

Mental health for the indigenous population in Chhattisgarh, India: Navigating challenges and crafting solutions.

INTRODUCTION: The ST population, residing in isolated, underdeveloped areas, faces significant health disparities compared to non-tribal communities. In particular, the lack of mental health infrastructure in these regions exacerbates their health challenges. Tribal communities possess distinct cultural beliefs surrounding health and illness, yet scant information exists regarding their physical and mental well-being. In addition, limited access to mental health services prevails, and many tribal individuals opt for traditional healing methods. METHODOLOGY: This study is part of the "Tele-men

Community-based Kangaroo Mother Care in low-birth-weight infants: a quality improvement study in the urban slums of Kolkata, West Bengal.

BACKGROUND: Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is recommended for low-birth-weight (LBW) infants in both facility and community, yet in India, KMC is largely confined to healthcare facilities. Evidence on the feasibility of implementing community-based KMC (c-KMC) in urban slum settings is limited. This quality improvement exploratory study explored the feasibility, safety, and adherence of implementing c-KMC in the urban slums of Kolkata, India. METHODS: A preliminary qualitative assessment explored barriers to c-KMC through in-depth interviews with mothers of LBW infants (n = 3) who received facili

Co-Constructing a Community-Based Telemedicine Program for People With Opioid Use Disorder During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons Learned and Implications for Future Service Delivery.

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered unprecedented expansion of telemedicine, including in the delivery of opioid agonist treatment (OAT) for people with opioid use disorder (OUD). However, many people with OUD lack the technological resources necessary for remote care, have complex needs, and are underserved, with precarious access to mainstream services. To address the needs of these individuals, we devised a unique program to deliver OAT via telemedicine with the support of community outreach workers in Montreal (Quebec, Canada). The program was co-constructed by the service de médecine des toxi

'I miss being honest': sex workers' accounts of silence and disclosure with health care providers in Ireland.

In this paper, female sex workers tell stories of their interactions with health care providers (HCP) in four cities in the Republic of Ireland. While Irish society has made great progress in listening to the sexual stories of women that were historically silenced (e.g. stories of abortion, sexual abuse), sex workers have not benefited from this new climate. Regularly silenced by parliamentarians and non-governmental organisations who speak upon their behalf, sex workers are consigned within a narrative of victimhood and coercion. This paper draws from a participant action research study condu

The Development of a Humanitarian Health Ethics Analysis Tool.

UNLABELLED: Introduction Health care workers (HCWs) who participate in humanitarian aid work experience a range of ethical challenges in providing care and assistance to communities affected by war, disaster, or extreme poverty. Although there is increasing discussion of ethics in humanitarian health care practice and policy, there are very few resources available for humanitarian workers seeking ethical guidance in the field. To address this knowledge gap, a Humanitarian Health Ethics Analysis Tool (HHEAT) was developed and tested as an action-oriented resource to support humanitarian workers
