Immune complexes (IC) in sera from patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) were isolated by the use of immunoabsorbent columns. Sera from 14 JRA patients (four seropositive for 19S IgM RF and 10 seronegative, but nine having hidden 19S IgM RF) were analyzed by the anti-human Clq (alpha HClq) and anti-human C3 (alpha HC3) columns. The columns were sequentially eluted with veronal buffer, 0.02 M EDTA, 0.5 M NaCl, and 1 M propionic acid. By sucrose density gradient ultracentrifugation and standard hemolytic complement assays, complement fixing activity of about 19 S and greater was found in blister fluids of one patient with pemphigus and three of five patients with bullous pemphigoid. Control blister fluids, including experimentally induced blisters, lacked such activity. Complement fixing activity was apparent, however, in 6 of 10 pemphigus sera and in two of five bullous pemphigoid sera tested. The material present in both pemphigus and bullous pemphigoid appears to activate the classical complement pathway.

In a study of female patients attending the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Clinic of the University College Hospital Ibadan, Nigeria, Herpes simplex virus was isolated from the cervix of 5 of 117 patients, a prevalence rate of 4.3%. Two (1.7%) of these patients had HSV in the vagina. The viruses were identified by culture in HEp-2 cell line, chloroform sensitivity test, complement fixation test and indirect immuno-fluorescent antibody technique. Only one (20%) of the five patients has HSV-1 in the endocervix.

Nine 4-year-old Arabian geldings were experimentally infected with Babesia equi of European origin. All horses developed detectable parasitemia an average of 30 days after they were inoculated, which was accompanied by a decrease in PCV. The infections were generally mild with no animal deaths. All horses became serologically positive by the indirect fluorescent antibody test within an average of 23 days after they were inoculated and by the complement-fixation test 30 days after they were inoculated.

A persistent lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, noninfectious for mice, was revealed in the continuous human cell line, Detroit-6. The virus was detected in the cell monolayer by an indirect immunofluorescence test and in the cell homogenate by a complement-fixation test. Between 30 and 80% of the cells produced viral antigen in subsequent passages of the culture. Thymidine analogues (BrDU and IDU) stimulated the synthesis of antigen. DNA of the persistently infected cell line was transfected to the mouse lymphoid cell line, L1210, which became persistently infected with the virus.

A test for platelet antibodies based on the inhibition of migration of platelets from a capillary tube is described. The technique is simple and is capable of detecting antibodies directed against HL-A antigens and the platelet-specific antigen, Pl-A1. Inhibitory activity was detected in sera from two of seven patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. The platelet migration inhibition test was as sensitive as platelet lysis and more sensitive than complement fixation, aggregometry, and platelet factor-3 release for detection of the antibodies studied.

A case of reactivated paracoccidioidomycosis in an immunosuppressed host is described, the first association of this disease with renal transplantation. His presentation and clinical course was similar to the general experience with this mycosis. his response to ketoconazole was delayed when compared with that in non-immunosuppressed patients. A serologic study was carried out by means of the complement-fixation test (CFT) and the immunofluorescence titration method (ITM) of a total of 1250 blood samples from 13 farms, having records of abortions, retention of placentae, and endometritis.
