Exploratory study about the relationship between leukocytosis and mental disorders in psychiatric outpatients.

Elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines and white blood cells (WBCs) have been observed in some patients with psychiatric disorders. However, the prevalence of leukocytosis, its association with psychiatric conditions, and its relevance in psychiatric outpatient care remain underexplored. This study included psychiatric outpatients who visited Akebono Clinic and underwent blood testing between October 2022 and September 2023. From patient records, we obtained age, sex, DSM-5-TR classification, and the highest and lowest WBC counts during the observation period. Leukocytosis was defined as an

Memory Functions in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Background/Objectives: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex psychiatric condition often associated with alterations in cognitive processes, including memory. Although memory dysfunction has been proposed as a contributing factor to the onset and maintenance of OCD symptoms, it remains debated whether these deficits reflect genuine cognitive impairments or maladaptive metacognitive processes, such as pathological doubt and memory distrust. This review aims to synthesize current findings on memory functioning in OCD, focusing on distinct memory systems and the role of metacognition.

The 10 most important things known about addiction.

If you were asked: 'What are the most important things we know about addiction?' what would you say? This paper brings together a body of knowledge across multiple domains and arranged as a list of 10 things known about addiction, as a response to such a question. The 10 things are: (1) addiction is fundamentally about compulsive behaviour; (2) compulsive drug seeking is initiated outside of consciousness; (3) addiction is about 50% heritable and complexity abounds; (4) most people with addictions who present for help have other psychiatric problems as well; (5) addiction is a chronic relapsin

An approach to the study of analyzability and analyses: the course of forty consecutive cases selected for supervised analysis.

The cases of 40 consecutive patients, accepted for supervised psychoanalysis at the Treatment Center of The New York Psychoanalytic Institute, are reviewed. The process of the initial evaluation is examined as well as the nature of the patient group, the characteristics of the treatment, outcome, and follow-up data. A survey of a group of 42 patients from the private practice of a group of graduate analysts during the same period of time is also reported. Both studies are discussed in relation to methodological issues, and an approach is suggested for the study of assessment of analyzability a

Health anxiety disorders: a cognitive construal.

The features of severe health anxiety, intense and persistent anxiety about one's present and future health, are described. In common with other anxiety disorders such as GAD, PTSD and OCD, the core of HAD is distressing, uncontrollable anxiety, and is classifiable as an Anxiety Disorder, Health Anxiety Disorder (HAD). The cognitive construal of HAD proposes that health anxiety is caused by catastrophic misinterpretations of the significance of sensations and/or changes in bodily functions and appearance (such as swellings, pain, loss of energy, dizzy spells). The nature, causes, triggers, per

Developmental comorbidity in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

With the present review, we intend to highlight the importance of considering the age- and development-dependent occurrence of comorbidity in ADHD and to outline distinct trajectories of symptom progression with possible impact on course and outcome of ADHD. The review will focus on introducing the concepts of "developmental epidemiology" and "developmental comorbidity". Psychiatric and non-psychiatric age-dependent comorbidity can be seen in the majority of children, adolescents and adults with ADHD, resulting in a severe impairment of everyday life with considerable functional and psychosoci

Diffusion tensor imaging in psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Since the development of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) nearly a decade ago, it has been extensively applied to a number of different psychiatric disorders. Its rapid assimilation into psychiatric research has stemmed from its unique property to measure the coherence and direction of neuronal fiber tracts. The goal of this article is to provide an overview of DTI and its application to psychiatric disorders. METHODS: We performed an extensive literature review of articles using DTI to study psychiatric disorders. To date, most DTI studies have been performed on individuals with sc

Association analysis of MAOA and COMT with neuroticism assessed by peers.

There are several reported associations between depressive disorders, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and a variety of polymorphisms in the monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) gene. Associations have also been reported between the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene and both OCD and bipolar depression. However, the role of these markers has not been explored for the personality trait of neuroticism (N), a normally distributed quantitative trait, which is highly genetically correlated with anxiety and depression and may be a vulnerability to either type of disorder. We explo

The relationship between impulse-control disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder: a current understanding and future research directions.

Impulse-control disorders (ICDs) constitute a heterogeneous group of conditions linked diagnostically by difficulties in resisting "the impulse, drive, or temptation to perform an act that is harmful to the person or to others." Specific ICDs share clinical, phenomenological and biological features with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) that have suggested that these disorders might be categorized together. However, other data suggest significant differences between OCD and ICDs. In this article, clinical, phenomenological and biological features of the formal ICDs are reviewed and compared

Accidental Autoerotic Deaths and Mental Disorder: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Accidental autoerotic death, more commonly known as "autoerotic asphyxia," is an extreme paraphilic behavior wherein individuals induce cerebral hypoxia during self-stimulated sexual activities, often by constricting the neck or obstructing respiratory passages. Data on accidental deaths caused by autoerotic play is very low because of the non-disclosure of the mode/circumstances of death or non-paralleled forensic systems in many countries. There is a high likelihood of coexisting mental disorders with such behavior. This review identifies the association of any comorbi

Specific eating disorder clusters based on social anxiety and novelty seeking.

While social avoidance and distress (SAD), a key aspect of social phobia related to behavioral inhibition, is high in different eating disorders (EDs), novelty seeking (NS) is mainly linked to bulimic disorders. Since heterogeneity in NS levels (low/high) exists in social phobia and in about 55% of ED with a highly disturbed personality, we examined ED types based on SAD and NS and their relationships to eating and comorbid features. Scores of 825 ED women on SAD and NS were submitted to cluster analysis. Five clinically differentiated ED clusters emerged: two without SAD (45%) and three with

Obsessive-compulsive features in pathological lottery and scratch-ticket gamblers.

The results of this study support the notion that pathological gamblers drawn from the community would score higher on all three scores from the YBOCS than light gamblers. Consistent with hypotheses, pathological gamblers (lottery and scratch ticket) reported more obsessions, compulsions, and avoidance behavior than the light gamblers, and also reported having more urges to engage in injurious behaviors to themselves and others. These findings provide evidence that pathological gambling falls in a spectrum or family of disorders which have obsessive-compulsive disorder at its core. These findi

A broad internalizing dimension accounts for the genetic associations between personality and individual internalizing disorders.

Much research has demonstrated that psychopathology can be described in terms of broad dimensions, representing liability for multiple psychiatric disorders. Broad spectra of psychopathology (e.g., internalizing and externalizing) are increasingly used as targets for research investigating the development, etiology, and course of psychopathology because they account for patterns of relatedness among disorders that were once presumed distinct. Thus, these spectra represent alluring targets due to their comprehensive and parsimonious nature. Nevertheless, little research has established the role

Obsessive-compulsive characteristics in patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis.

To explore suggested relationships between involuntary motor disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), we evaluated obsessive-compulsive characteristics in patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (IST). Twenty-two patients with IST had significantly higher scores than 29 age- and sex-matched healthy controls on the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale and the obsessionality subscale of the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised. The IST patients also had higher (though not significantly so) scores on the Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory. Their Beck Depression Inventory scores wer

[Basic motor pattern in 4 neurotic structures].

This article discusses an experimental study in which 10 schizoid, 10 depressive, 10 obsessive-compulsive and 10 hysterical patients were filmed in five planned actions. On the basis of a questionnaire, the nature of the motoric process in each case was then evaluated by 11 people who knew nothing of the patients' personality structures. There were highly significant correlations between certain items and individual structures, allowing for the formulation of four basic patterns of movement for the individual structures. In the framework of the psychology of drives, these results confirm on th

Cybernetics, activation, and drug effects.

Patients present unique combinations of familial relationships, developmental idiosyncrasies, social aberrations, affective states, cognitive abilities, symptoms, defects, and maladaptations. Psychopharmacological treatments form a useful approach to cutting through this complexity to the core pathophysiology. Focusing on disorders that can be brought to complete remission by medication suggests that retarded and agitated depressions, manic and angry hyperactive paranoid states, panic disorder, emotionally unstable character disorders and schizophrenias are governed by the degree of derangemen

Imaginative, dissociative, and schizotypal processes in obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

This study investigates imaginative, dissociative, and schizotypal processes that are potentially relevant to obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. Students (n = 377) completed questionnaires that assessed inferential confusion, absorption, schizotypal personality, and other domains. Hierarchical regression revealed that inferential confusion and absorption were the most consistent predictors of OC symptoms; other content predicted variance for specific OC symptoms. For example, schizotypal personality predicted checking and hoarding symptoms, but not cleanliness or ordering rituals. Immersive t
