In August 1988, 1,773 Massachusetts 16-19-year-olds were surveyed by telephone using anonymous random digit dialing; response rate 82 percent. Logistic regression tested whether alcohol and drug use, perceived susceptibility to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), severity of HIV if infected, effectiveness of condoms in preventing infection, barriers to condom use, and behavioral cues such as exposure to media or personal communication about acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were independently related to condom use. Among sexually active respondents, (61 percent of those interviewed) 31…

OBJECTIVE: Previous survey research indicates that women and men experience reduced sexual pleasure when using condoms, especially compared to nonbarrier family planning methods. This study seeks to explore those experiences of reduced pleasure in-depth and how they affect contraceptive method decisions and use.
STUDY DESIGN: In-depth interviews with 30 men and 30 women between the ages of 18 and 36 years in the United States about their contraceptive decisions and use were analyzed.
RESULTS: Both men and women complained about the way that condoms interfered with their sexual pleasure. Seve…

BackgroundThere are disproportionate HIV/AIDS infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Ghana compared to the general population, despite the implementation of condom utilisation campaigns. Attitudes towards the use of condoms are culturally dependent, but most condom use attitude studies ignore culture.AimThe study aimed to assess the determinants of condom use attitudes among MSM in two regions of Ghana.MethodsFrom May 2025 to July 2025, a regional-based cross-sectional study was carried out using a snowball sampling approach to select 1000 MSM from two regions of Ghana. The study …

Data from a randomized controlled trial in 2015 were used to estimate the growth trajectories of peer norms, self-efficacy, and condom use behavior, and to identify associated sociodemographic and behavioral factors among a sample of 804 Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM). Latent class analysis and growth mixture modeling were conducted using Mplus. Two growth trajectories were estimated for each outcome variable with good model fit. The growth trajectories of peer norms were related to age (β = - 0.066, p < 0.05). The growth trajectories of self-efficacy were related to age (β = 0.057, p

OBJECTIVES: Condomless anal intercourse contributes significantly to the spread of HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM). Factors related to condomless anal intercourse with known HIV-positive partners among MSM are not well understood. The authors describe factors associated with inconsistent condom use with known HIV-positive partners prior to participants' diagnosis with HIV.
METHODS: New York City health department disease intervention specialists interviewed newly HIV-diagnosed MSM ages ≥13 years reporting knowingly having anal sex with HIV-positive partners between June 2013 and Oct

Clients of female sex workers (CFSWs) are a bridge population for the spread of HIV and syphilis to low or average risk heterosexuals. Most studies have examined the point prevalence of these infections in CFSWs. Limited evidence suggests that older age CFSWs are at a higher risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases compared with younger clients. Thus, we sought to describe long-term trends in HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis C (HCV) to better understand how these infections differ by sex worker classification and client age. We also examined trends in HIV, syphilis, and HCV among categories

UNLABELLED: Background Biobehavioural data on transgender women (TGW) are limited globally.
METHODS: We used data collected as part of the 2017-18 National Integrated HIV Biobehavioural Survey, which included 254 TGW in Colombo and 252 in Jaffna, for structured questionnaire interviews and biological testing. We performed multivariable logistic regression analysis to explore factors associated with condom use.
RESULTS: We found low HIV prevalence in Colombo (0.6%) and no HIV infections in Jaffna. TGW in Colombo had higher positivity on the Treponema pallidum-particle agglutination test (2.5%

Little is known about HIV-seropositive men's awareness and use of untested barrier methods during anal intercourse. A sample of 240 HIV-seropositive men (69.2% men of color) completed a self-administered survey that included items on nonoxynol-9 (N-9), female condoms, and the simultaneous use of two male condoms (double bagging). Most participants (79.6%) had heard of N-9 being used to prevent HIV transmission during anal intercourse. Of these, 20.0% rated N-9 as more effective than condoms, and 14.6% had used N-9 instead of condoms. Fewer men (35.4%) were aware of female condoms being used du…

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether young women's participation in a combination HIV-prevention intervention was associated with accessing and using condoms and other contraceptives.
STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional household survey was conducted from 2017 to 2018 among a representative sample of young women aged 15-24 years old living in six South African districts in which the intervention was implemented. Cross-tabulations and multivariate regression analyses of weighted data were performed to examine access to and use of condoms and other contraceptives.

BACKGROUND: While prior studies have examined structural and individual-level barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake, little is known about the psychological mechanisms underlying resistance to PrEP, particularly among high-risk groups. The status quo bias (SQB) theory provides a theoretical framework for understanding why individuals may resist beneficial health innovations.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the associations between SQB and PrEP resistance intention among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) and to test whether condom-use inertia moderated these

INTRODUCTION: although Rwanda's HIV prevalence has declined, many people are still acquiring or living with it. Among other methods of HIV prevention, condoms are a safe and reliable method in addition to preventing pregnancy and other sexually transmitted infections, especially when used properly. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and determinants of condom use during last sexual intercourse among reproductive-aged women in Rwanda.
METHODS: using data from the cross-sectional, nationally representative Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (RDHS) conducted in 2019/2020, we carried …

BACKGROUND: Inconsistent use of the contraceptive pill and condoms contributes significantly to poor sexual health outcomes for young people. There is evidence that action planning interventions may improve pill and condom use, but this approach is not systematically used in sexual healthcare. This study is the first to assess acceptability and feasibility of evaluating a digital intervention to support action plan formation for three sexual health behaviours with clinic attendees. It also considered the role of trait self-control and whether the intervention supported production of quality pl…

Approximately 40 % of new infections occur among married women. No studies have examined the factors that may contribute to HIV transmission among HIV-negative wives in HIV serodiscordant relationships in Gujarat, India. In 2010, a cross-sectional survey with 185 HIV serodiscordant, married couples (i.e. 185 HIV-positive husbands and their 185 HIV-negative wives) in Gujarat was conducted. Socio-demographic, individual, and interpersonal characteristics of HIV-positive husbands and their HIV negative wives were examined. The association of these characteristics with inconsistent condom use and

Condoms remain the most effective barrier against the sexual transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Male condoms have proven to be 80% to 90% effective, and female condoms have similar results. Poor adherence and improper use limit their effectiveness. In addition to condoms, microbicides are a promising barrier against HIV transmission. More than 50 candidate topical microbicide compounds have undergone preclinical or clinical testing in the last 10 years, but there are currently no US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved compounds. Rectal microbicides are also being d…

Some sexual and gender minorities (SGM), including men who have sex with men and transgender women, are disproportionately vulnerable to HIV. Many SGM in Africa report experiencing verbal or physical violence due to their sexual and/or gender identities or behaviours. The pathways linking such SGM violence to HIV acquisition are complex. We described experiences of verbal and physical SGM violence and explored pathways to HIV acquisition among SGM assigned male sex at birth using a two-stage individual participant data meta-analysis of three African cohort studies: CohMSM (Burkina Faso, Côte d

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual, and other men-who-have-sex-with-men (GBMSM) continue to be disproportionately affected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Although HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) offers an effective means of reducing incident HIV among this population, the HIV-preventive success of oral-based PrEP is contingent upon regimen adherence. Elevated rates of alcohol-, substance use-, and mental health-related issues among GBMSM potentially hinder PrEP-taking efforts, however the evidence for this remains mixed. Accordingly, the present study entailed a comprehensive qualitative in

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately at risk of contracting HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs). Correct and consistent condom use is the most effective method to prevent HIV and other STIs among sexually active MSM.
METHODS: Using data from the 2002, 2006-10, 2011-13 cycles of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), the overall prevalence of condom use at last sex and by sexual risk behaviours (sex with ≥2 same-sex partners, sex with ≥2 opposite sex partners, sex with a person who injects drugs, sex with an HIV-positive person and exchang
