No effect of antidepressant treatment on elevated serum ceruloplasmin level in patients with first-episode depression: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ceruloplasmin, an acute phase reactant with antioxidant capacity, has been found to be increased in some psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and obsessive compulsive disorder. However, studies in depression are very scarce. We undertook this study determine the serum ceruloplasmin levels of depressive patients before and after treatment, to compare them with those of healthy control subjects, and to assess any possible association of ceruloplasmin and treatment response. METHODS: Nineteen (8 male, 11 female) patients with major depressive disorder and 40 (17 male, 23

Determination of the augmentation effects of hyaluronic acid on different heel structures in amputated lower limbs of diabetic patients using ultrasound elastography.

This study measured tissue properties of different anatomies of heels in amputated lower limbs of diabetic patients before and after hyaluronic acid (HA) or normal saline (NS) injections. Seven amputated lower limbs from six diabetic patients constituted the experimental group and one amputated lower limb from a diabetic patient served as the control. The limbs were placed in a fixation platform. A 5-12 MHz linear-array ultrasound transducer controlled by a stepping motor was used to load and unload tested heels. The loading-unloading velocity was 6 mm/s and the maximum loading stress was 178

Protective effect of exosomes derived from platelet-rich plasma during human sperm cryopreservation.

Fertility preservation is a critical aspect of improving human life quality. Sperm cryopreservation is highly recommended for men at risk of infertility; however, it can have detrimental effects on sperm quality. In this study, we evaluate the effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and PRP-derived exosomes on cryopreservation outcomes in men with asthenoteratozoospermia referred to a public infertility center. The semen samples from 75 men with asthenoteratozoospermia (based on WHO 2020 criteria) were randomly divided into five groups: Control (conventional freezing), Exo/before, Exo/After, PRP

Rituximab in the treatment of nephrotic syndrome: a systematic review.

Recently, the role of B cells in the pathogenesis of nephrotic syndrome is explained by some researchers. It has also been shown that the anti-CD20 antibody, rituximab, may be an option in the treatment of these patients. In this systematic review, we performed extensive search and identified studies on rituximab use in children with nephrotic syndrome. There are some case reports as well as larger series in this regard. The majority of these case reports and series have demonstrated the success of rituximab in the treatment of nephrotic syndrome, especially in pediatric patients with steroid-

Use of medications to treat inflammatory bowel diseases before and during pregnancy in Switzerland between 2012 and 2019: an observational study using the claims-based MAMA cohort.

BACKGROUND: Effective management of Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) before and during pregnancy is crucial as women with well-controlled IBD at conception tend to remain in remission throughout pregnancy, experiencing outcomes similar to women without IBD. Most IBD medications are considered safe during pregnancy, except for methotrexate. Despite reassuring data, previous studies have highlighted that women often have negative perceptions and fears related to IBD medications, leading to poor adherence. There is a lack of data regarding how IBD is treated before and during pregnancy in Switze

Serially Combining Epidemiological Designs Does Not Improve Overall Signal Detection in Vaccine Safety Surveillance.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccine safety surveillance commonly includes a serial testing approach with a sensitive method for 'signal generation' and specific method for 'signal validation.' The extent to which serial testing in real-world studies improves or hinders overall performance in terms of sensitivity and specificity remains unknown. METHODS: We assessed the overall performance of serial testing using three administrative claims and one electronic health record database. We compared type I and II errors before and after empirical calibration for historical comparator, self-controlled case series

Glucocorticoids enhance in vivo exposure-based therapy of spider phobia.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical and clinical studies indicate that the administration of glucocorticoids may promote fear extinction processes. In particular, it has been shown that glucocorticoids enhance virtual reality based exposure therapy of fear of heights. Here, we investigate whether glucocorticoids enhance the outcome of in vivo exposure-based group therapy of spider phobia. METHODS: In a double blind, block-randomized, placebo-controlled, between-subject study design, 22 patients with specific phobia of spiders were treated with two sessions of in vivo exposure-based group therapy. Effect of surfactant on pharyngeal mechanics in sleeping humans: implications for sleep apnoea.

Instillation of surfactant into the pharyngeal lumen reduces the pressure required to reopen an occluded airway, and decreases the apnoea/hypopnoea index (AHI). The authors hypothesised that surfactant also reduces the sleep-related increase in pharyngeal resistance. To test this hypothesis two single blind, crossover, placebo-controlled studies were performed. In protocol A seven male, asymptomatic snoring subjects were studied during sleep. Inspiratory pharyngeal resistance was calculated from plots of airflow versus supraglottic pressure (seven breaths) before and after surfactant or saline
