Because of high vaccination rates, the Northern Territory of Australia had not seen locally transmitted toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae since the 1990s, until cutaneous diphtheria cases emerged in May 2025 and respiratory cases in March 2026. By 30 April 2026, there had been 131 cases (34 respiratory, 97 cutaneous) in an ongoing outbreak characterised by a high proportion of cutaneous cases with transmission driven by crowding and consequent poor skin health. Most patients have had mild disease due to prior vaccination.

A wide range of adjuvants including alhydrogel, saponin, Corynebacterium parvum, DDAB, Pfizer CP-20,961, oil adjuvants and several MDP analogues have been compared for their adjuvant activity in protecting mice against lethal Trypanosoma cruzi infection following immunization with a T. cruzi 90K cell surface glycoprotein. Only saponin was found to be effective. Promotion did not correlate with the ability to promote a particular Ig isotype; however, saponin was unique in its ability to promote cell-mediate immunity against the 90K glycoprotein.

An analysis of 3,795 positive blood cultures obtained from 1,718 patients in a 2.5-year evaluation of Tryptic Soy Broth (TSB) and Thiol Broth is reported. Isolation rates of Actinobacillus and Pseudomonas were significantly greater in TSB, whereas isolation rates of Streptococcus and Corynebacterium (aerobic and anaerobic) were significantly greater in Thiol. Otherwise, the two media were similar. Disregarding contaminants, anaerobic bacteria represented 11% of positive cultures and 20% of patients with bacteremia. Eleven per cent of the patients had polymicrobial bacteremia.

The in vitro activity of dirithromycin (LY-237216), a new macrolide erythromycin derivative, was compared to that of four other agents (clarithromycin, erythromycin, roxithromycin, clindamycin) against 334 gram-positive isolates obtained from cancer patients.
