Evaluation of Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Effects of Ferulic Acid and Quinic Acid on Acetic Acid-Induced Ulcerative Colitis in Rats.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by oxidative stress and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Ferulic acid and quinic acid, two phenolic compounds, are thought to have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of ferulic acid and quinic acid in rats with acetic acid (AA)-induced ulcerative colitis. To this end, 64 Wistar rats were randomly divided into eight groups, each consisting of eight rats. AA was administered intrarectally to induce ulcerative colitis. Feru

Astrocyte-Targeted Transporter-Utilizing Derivatives of Ferulic Acid Can Have Multifunctional Effects Ameliorating Inflammation and Oxidative Stress in the Brain.

Ferulic acid (FA) is a natural phenolic antioxidant, which can exert also several other beneficial effects to combat neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. One of these properties is the inhibition of several enzymes and factors, such as β-site amyloid precursor protein (APP) cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1), cyclooxygenases (COXs), lipoxygenases (LOXs), mammalian (or mechanistic) target for rapamycin (mTOR), and transcription factor NF-κB. We have previously synthesized three L-type amino acid transporter 1- (LAT1-) utilizing FA-derivatives with the aim to dev

Optimization of Aspergillus Niger fermentation for enzyme production and enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat bran for total ferulic acid via RSM.

Phenolic acids in wheat bran, particularly ferulic acid (FA), exhibit antimicrobial properties, but most FA is bound to cell wall polysaccharides via ester/ether linkages, severely limiting its bioavailability and extraction. Distinct from prior studies relying on commercial enzymes or single-component substrates, this study enhanced FA release through Aspergillus niger (A. niger) fermentation (no exogenous enzymes), utilizing a wheat bran-vinegar residue (9:1, w/w) substrate. Fermentation and destarched wheat bran (DSWB) enzymatic hydrolysis were optimized via Box-Behnken design and response

Dietary compounds inhibit proliferation and contraction of keloid and hypertrophic scar-derived fibroblasts in vitro: therapeutic implication for excessive scarring.

BACKGROUND: Keloid and hypertrophic scars commonly occur after injuries. Overproliferation of fibroblasts, overproduction of collagen, and contraction characterize these pathologic scars. Current treatment of excessive scars with intralesional corticosteroid injections used individually or in combination with other methods often have unsatisfactory outcome, frustrating both the patient and the clinician. The phytochemical compounds are well known as potential anticancer agents. We have investigated the inhibitory effects of compounds on keloid fibroblasts (KF) and hypertrophic scar-derived fib

Ferulic acid photoconversion maintains Nrf2-mediated antioxidant defense against UVA damage.

BACKGROUND: Chronic UVA exposure induces oxidative stress, DNA damage, and ultimately photoaging. Although natural antioxidants are considered safer than synthetic UV filters, many suffer from poor photostability and can even shift toward pro-oxidant activity upon UV irradiation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the photostability and photoprotective efficacy of ferulic acid (FA) and determine whether its photoconversion retains protective activity. METHODS: FA photoconversion was analysed by UV-Vis and LC-QTOF-MS. Photoprotective effects were assessed in UVA-exposed HaCaT cells using ROS assays, mito

Biological Potential of Methanol Extracts from Plants of the Genus Spiraea Spreading in Russia.

The genus Spiraea is well represented in the Russian flora. Several phytochemical and bioactivity studies, completed so far with several individual species of this genus, indicate young Spiraea shoots as a promising source of pharmaceutically and nutraceutically active natural products. Therefore, a broad-scale phytochemical analysis of shoot extracts from multiple Russian Spiraea species (i.e., profiling of secondary metabolites and assignment of their structures), complemented with comprehensive activity screening, might give access to valuable information on the structure-activity relations

Propionate absorption associated with bicarbonate secretion in vitro in the mouse cecum.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by the microbial fermentation of undigested polysaccharide are rapidly absorbed in the large intestine. One proposed mechanism for this SCFA absorption is SCFA/HCO(-)3 exchange. To provide factual evidence for the operation of SCFA/HCO(-)3 exchange, we mounted an isolated mouse cecum in the Ussing chamber and measured the rates of propionate absorption (J(prop(ms))), alkaline secretion (J(OH(sm))) and total CO2 (HCO(-)3+CO2) secretion (J(tCO2(sm))), and the short-circuit current (I(sc)) with the mucosal side bathed with a Cl- and HCO(-)3-free solution.

Fabrication and characterization of zein/PVA nanofibers containing ferulic acid-loaded cyclodextrin metal-organic framework for enhanced sustained release and bioavailability.

Advanced delivery systems are crucial for overcoming the limitations of ferulic acid (FA), including its poor water solubility and stability. This study utilized γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (γ-CD-MOF) to encapsulate FA, yielding FA-loaded γ-CD-MOF (FA@CD-MOF) nanocarriers, which were subsequently incorporated into zein/polyvinyl alcohol electrospun nanofibers to construct a dual-encapsulation system. Results showed that FA@CD-MOF exhibited an average particle size of 228.36 nm, and demonstrated efficient FA encapsulation with a loading capacity of 27.39% and encapsulation efficiency
