Aneurysmal bone cyst of thoracic spine mimicking spinal tuberculosis.

A 22-year-old female presented to our services with back pain and paraparesis for 11 months. She was earlier diagnosed with tuberculosis of spine, and antitubercular chemotherapy was started. However her condition had worsened. Plain and contrast-enhanced computed tomography scans of the thorax and magnetic resonance imaging of the thoracic spine showed heterogenous, lytic, expansile lesion involving third thoracic vertebra with epidural extension and large bilateral paraspinal and mediastinal components. Multiple variably sized loculations with fluid-fluid levels were seen within the lesion.

[The levels of alpha-1-antitrypsin in the periapical cyst lesions].

Alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) is a serum protease inhibitor, with a well established role in bodily defense against destructive inflammatory disease. In order to investigate the role of this protease inhibitor in the periapical lesions, 13 patients were investigated. Serum alpha-1-antitrypsin levels of 13 patients were 871.8 +/- 73.6 mg/dl whereas 296.6 +/- 32.6 mg/dl in the control group. Difference was important between both groups (P less than 0.01). Alpha-1-antitrypsin levels were 40.2 +/- 13.7 mg/dl in the cyst fluid. Although the alpha-1-antitrypsin levels in the patients serum were elevated…

Anti-Taenia solium monoclonal antibodies for the detection of parasite antigens in body fluids from patients with neurocysticercosis.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC), an infection of the brain by Taenia solium (Ts) cysts, is the most common cause of adult-onset epilepsy in developing countries. Serological testing consists primarily of varying methods to detect antibodies in body fluids and more recently antigen (Ag) detection assays to identify individuals or animals with viable parasites. Antigen assays currently in use employ monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) raised against T. saginata, which have known cross reactivity to animal cestodes but are highly specific in human samples. We produced, characterized and tested 21 mAbs raised a

Identifying Neoplastic Versus Non-neoplastic Pancreatic Cystic Lesions-What Is the Current Evidence?

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of modern, high-resolution cross-sectional imaging has led to increased detection of pancreatic cystic lesion … cases, such features may prompt direct surgical intervention. EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration of cyst fluid for chemical, genetic, and cytological analysis helps differentiate neoplastic mucinous cysts-such as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms and mucinous cystic neoplasms-from benign, non-mucinous cysts. CONCLUSIONS: Accurate diagnosis of PCLs re …

Endoscopic treatment of midline cerebral cysts.

Axial cerebral cysts of various location and origin are relatively rare lesions. Endoscopic neurosurgery has made them amenable for safe intervention even in vital brain regions. Neuroendoscopic treatment was used by the author in 35 patients during the last 7 years without permanent morbidity or mortality. The aim of the surgery was to fenestrate the cyst or to perform cyst exstirpation to relieve the pressure effect on the surrounding functioning neural tissue and to reestablish the patency of cerebrospinal fluid pathways, as well as histological verification of the cyst origin. Contemporary

Ruptured large hepatic cyst with elevated serum and ascites CA19-9 level.

Tumor markers such as carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) are generally useful in ruling out malignancy of hepatic cysts. The patient was a 72-year-old man who had a ruptured liver cyst in the right liver, which had been noted since he was 67 years old at another hospital. The initial laboratory tests demonstrated elevated CA19-9 (193 784.3 U/mL). We made the diagnosis with a simple ruptured liver cyst from magnetic resonance imaging and cytological examination of ascites, and laparoscopic fenestration with drainage of the abdominal fluid was performed. Pathological diagnosis of the resected wa

Epidural bleeding secondary to a synovial cyst rupture: a case report and review of literature.

Hemorrhage into a juxtafacet cyst is rare and cyst rupture with hemorrhagic extension into the epidural space is even less commonly seen. We describe the case of a patient with a hemorrhagic synovial cyst with rupture associated to abundant bleeding in the epidural space. A 61-year-old man had a 5-month history of worsening low back pain radiating into the right leg with associated weakness and numbness. A magnetic resonance imaging scan showed the presence of a mild anterior spondylolisthesis of L5 on S1 with increased synovial fluid into both facet joints. A suspected synovial cyst of the ri

[Trial therapy of inoperable abdominal hydatid cysts by puncture].

Hydatidosis is a major public health problem in Tunisia. The infection rate in the normal population is over a 100 times higher than in the generally accepted hyperendemicity level (1,720 in 100,000 as against 13 in 100,000!). The use of drugs of benzimidazole derivates prevents the development of scolices into hydatic cysts and allows to try a non-surgical cure by the punction of hydatid cyst of the sheep liver, i.e. aspiration of the cyst fluid and injection of hypertonic salt solution into the drug treated animal. The good results obtained in a group of 16 animals permitted us to apply this…

A Rare Case of Negative-Pressure Hydrocephalus: A Plausible Explanation and the Role of Transmantle Theory.

BACKGROUND: Negative-pressure hydrocephalus is a rare condition with the development of symptomatic hydrocephalus despite subnormal intracranial pressure (ICP). The etiology remains unclear. Some authors proposed that the differential pressure between the ventricular space and the subarachnoid space over cerebral convexity leads to the development of ventriculomegaly, namely as the transmantle pressure theory. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 49-year-old patient with a left Sylvian fissure arachnoid cyst underwent several surgeries including cystoperitoneal shunts and fenestrations of the cyst. The patien

Spontaneous Regression of Pineal Region Arachnoid Cyst: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Arachnoid cyst is a rare benign cerebrospinal fluid-filled cyst that can develop anywhere in the brain along the arachnoid membrane and usually unaccompanied by the anomalous development of the brain structure. These cysts are usually located in the middle cranial fossa. However, they are also denoted in other regions. Arachnoid cysts are mostly asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally. Spontaneous regression of arachnoid cysts in different anatomical regions of the brain has been reported in the literature. However, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first case reporting an unusual spon

[The percutaneous treatment of breast cysts. A proposed new method].

Percutaneous needle aspiration of symptomatic breast cysts has nowadays replaced surgery. The medical literature reports on the accidental breaking of breast cysts during mammography. The authors report their personal experience with the percutaneous treatment of symptomatic breast cysts by cyst wall breaking. Twenty symptomatic breast cysts were treated with US-guided needle aspiration and 6-7 times more air than the aspirated fluid was injected through the same needle left in situ to break the cyst wall. US follow-up scans were performed 3, 6 and 12 months after the percutaneous treatment. T

Organic anion secretion in polycystic kidney disease.

This study examined whether organic anion secretion contributes to fluid accumulation in cysts in polycystic kidney disease. Clearance and micropuncture studies were done on young (7 to 16 wk old), mostly male, heterozygous Han:SPRD cystic rats and healthy control littermate rats. Heterozygous Han:SPRD rats manifest a slowly progressive autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease that closely resembles the human disorder. Left kidney GFR (polyfructosan clearance), in microl/min per 100 g body wt, averaged 331 +/- 36 (SD) in seven healthy rats and 278 +/- 75 in seven cystic rats. The maximal r

Ruptured Baker's Cyst Demystified: Current Evidence, Diagnostic Strategies, and Treatment Options for an Under-Recognized Condition.

Rupture of a Baker's cyst is an under-recognized condition that may closely mimic deep vein thrombosis, often leading to diagnostic uncertainty and delayed management. Although popliteal cysts are common findings associated with degenerative or inflammatory knee disorders, their rupture represents an uncommon but clinically significant complication. Ruptured cysts typically present with acute calf swelling and pain due to extravasation of synovial fluid into the intermuscular planes. The condition may mimic venous thrombosis (pseudo-thrombophlebitis), making diagnostic accuracy essential. Dupl
