[Neurophysiologic tests for the early detection of deafness in children].

Using brainstem auditory evoked potentials and tympanometry the authors have examined 120 children aging from several months to five years and they have found a high percentage of children with hearing impairment with sensorineural deafness. The children had also secretory inflammation of the middle ear. It has been suggested that secretory inflammation of the middle ear deteriorates the basic hearing impairment because of which it should be early diagnosed and surgically treated. Owing to the complex problem of children deafness, the authors recommend that several methods of examination shoul…

Genetic counseling of the deaf. Medical and cultural considerations.

Genetic counseling is a communication process where information is provided in a nondirective way. Genetic counseling emphasizes informed decision making and provision of medical, psychological, and social support; genetic counseling is not advice giving. Individuals who are members of the deaf community (culturally deaf) present unique challenges to the ability of genetic counselors to be nondirective. In contrast to the medical model which considers deafness to be a pathological condition, many deaf people do not consider themselves to be handicapped but define themselves as being part of a …

Incidence of genetic factors in the causation of deafness in childhood.

Routine investigations of 1568 children with severe-profound hearing loss, during a 15 years' period, revealed the following classification: Hereditary Deafness 25%, Acquired Deafness 43% (prenatally 11%, perinatally 16%, postnatally 16%), Unknown Deafness 32%. This group of unknown causes is usually large in any surgery of deafness and in many of these children deafness is believed to have a genetic basis. In the light of this premise, we performed more careful genetic and clinical investigation in 268 children coming under observation in the 3 last years. Moreover, we examined a group of 44 …

[The promontory test and electrocochleography in deafness caused by mumps].

Contradictory histological findings in patients with deafness following mumps led us to conduct electrophysiological investigations. Promontory testing (PT) and measurement of cochlear microphonics (CM) enabled us to distinguish between neural and sensory deafness. On the basis of a careful history and serological tests in 19 cases of unilateral deafness we found that the hearing loss was probably caused by mumps. In all patients except one auditory sensations could be obtained by electric stimulation of the acoustic nerve whereas no CM were detectable even with strong stimuli of 100 dB tonepi…

The intelligibility of deaf speech to experienced and inexperienced listeners.

The study examines differences between experienced and inexperienced listeners in understanding the speech of the deaf. Listeners heard test words in three conditions: in sentences, as isolated words, and as segmented words (the later being words originally produced in sentences, excised, and then presented in isolation). Factors believed to account for listener differences were examined. These were relative word intelligibility, context, including the amount of linguistic information in a sentence, the overall length, and the position of the test word in the sentence. Scores for experienced l

The Waardenburg syndrome in deaf children in southern Africa.

Eighty-nine children with the Waardenburg syndrome were identified during diagnostic surveys of 3006 deaf children attending 19 special scho … idual had the classic syndromic stigmata while the other had apparently undifferentiated perceptive deafness. On this basis it is possible that phenotypic expression of the Waardenburg gene in some persons may be limited to a hearing deficit. Our observations indicate that the sole manifestation of the faulty gene can be irides of a uniform, striking and u …

Problems of psychiatric care of a deaf-blind population.

Technical difficulties in the evaluation and care of psychiatric disturbances in a deaf-blind population are described. Experience at the National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults demonstrated the relevance of etiological, developmental, adaptive, and social factors for the understanding of the clinical syndromes commonly encountered. The importance of such understandings for adequate diagnosis, treatment, and vocational planning is discussed.
