Sponges from the phylum Porifera exist throughout the world in marine and freshwater environments. Although many encounters with humans are benign, some may lead to local dermatologic manifestations and in rare cases can cause more severe systemic reactions. Initial decontamination is of utmost importance to diminish the severity of the reaction. As contact between humans and coastal environments increases, it is important for physicians to know how to recognize and treat sponge dermatitis.

Toilet flushing can contribute to disease transmission by generating aerosolized bacteria and viruses that can land on nearby surfaces or follow air currents. Aerobic and anaerobic bacterial bioaerosol loads, and bacterial counts on 2 surfaces in a bathroom with a permanently installed, automated ultraviolet C (UVC) irradiation device, were significantly lower than in a comparable bathroom without the UVC device. Permanently installed UVC lights may be a useful supplementary decontamination tool in shared patient bathrooms.

Dracunculiasis was mainly spread in Bukhara. Control was made in two directions: 1) timely detection of patients, their registration, treatment and parasitic decontamination; 2) elimination of Dracunculus larvae-infected Cyclops in the water reservoirs. The prevalence of the disease is as high as 20% and a total of 1116 patients were identified. Only one patient was notified in 1931. In 1932, foci of Dracunculus stopped its existence in Old Bukhara and 56 neighboring inhabited areas.

BACKGROUND: We assessed the impact of centrifugation on recovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb).
METHODS: We used 0.5 McFarland from the 2 weeks M. tb, H37Rv culture and homogenized sputum for our experiments. Samples were decontaminated by 2 % NaOH for 20 min and with PBS for controls. Decontaminated aliquots were centrifuged at 2000×g, 3000×g and 6000×g for 40 min and inoculated on MGIT and LJ media. MGITs were incubated into the BACTEC MGIT 960 Systems following BD manuals and data analyzed on GraphPad Software.
RESULTS: The positivity (days) for M. tb, H37Rv in MGIT and LJ decrease

This case report provided a unique opportunity to investigate the extent of microbiota infiltration on the oxidized implant surface that has been compromised by peri-implantitis. Scanning electron microscopic analysis confirmed the etiologic role of the bacteria on the loss of supporting structure and the difficulty in complete removal of bacterial infiltration on the implant surface. This case report emphasizes the need to perform definitive surface decontamination on failing dental implants prior to a regeneration procedure.

We report a case of bacteremia secondary to Cupriavidus pauculus in a 15-month-old boy on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The source of the organism was water in the thermoregulator reservoir. The child responded well to cefepime and ciprofloxacin, a delayed oxygenator change out and replacement of the thermoregulator reservoir with a unit that was cleaned and decontaminated with sodium hypochlorite. Isolation of Cupriavidus pauculus from a patient on ECMO support should raise suspicion of the reservoir as a source.

Overdoses of macrocyclic lactones in dogs and cats can result in such signs as tremors, ataxia, seizures, coma, and blindness. Dogs with the ABCB1-1Δ gene defect are predisposed to macrocyclic lactone toxicosis at lower dosages than dogs without the defect. Intravenous lipid emulsion therapy has been suggested for treatment of macrocyclic lactone toxicosis but evidence of efficacy is limited. Initial decontamination and supportive care remain the mainstays of therapy for macrocyclic lactone toxicosis.

We performed an analysis of high-speed handpieces reprocessed only with 70% w/v alcohol and found that the methods used in clinical practice are not safe.
