Benchmarking biological nutrient removal in wastewater treatment plants: influence of mathematical model assumptions.

This paper examines the effect of different model assumptions when describing biological nutrient removal (BNR) by the activated sludge models (ASM) 1, 2d & 3. The performance of a nitrogen removal (WWTP1) and a combined nitrogen and phosphorus removal (WWTP2) benchmark wastewater treatment plant was compared for a series of model assumptions. Three different model approaches describing BNR are considered. In the reference case, the original model implementations are used to simulate WWTP1 (ASM1 & 3) and WWTP2 (ASM2d). The second set of models includes a reactive settler, which extends the des

Integrated assessment of nitrogen losses from agriculture in EU-27 using MITERRA-EUROPE.

The high N inputs to agricultural systems in many regions in 27 member states of the European Union (EU-27) result in N leaching to groundwater and surface water and emissions of ammonia (NH(3)), nitrous oxide (N(2)O), nitric oxide (NO), and dinitrogen (N(2)) to the atmosphere. Measures taken to decreasing these emissions often focus at one specific pollutant, but may have both antagonistic and synergistic effects on other N emissions. The model MITERRA-EUROPE was developed to assess the effects and interactions of policies and measures in agriculture on N losses and P balances at a regional l

Nitric oxide and nitrosative stress tolerance in bacteria.

Nitric oxide is not only an obligatory intermediate in denitrification, but also a signalling and defence molecule of major importance. However, the basis of resistance to NO and RNS (reactive nitrogen species) is poorly understood in many microbes. The cellular targets of NO and RNS [e.g. metalloproteins, thiols in proteins, glutathione and Hcy (homocysteine)] may themselves serve as signal transducers, sensing NO and RNS, and resulting in altered gene expression and synthesis of protective enzymes. The properties of a number of such protective mechanisms are outlined here, including globins,

Microautoradiographic study of Rhodocyclus-related polyphosphate-accumulating bacteria in full-scale enhanced biological phosphorus removal plants.

The ecophysiology of uncultured Rhodocyclus-related polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAO) present in three full-scale enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) activated sludge plants was studied by using microautoradiography combined with fluorescence in situ hybridization. The investigations showed that these organisms were present in all plants examined and constituted 5 to 10, 10 to 15, and 17 to 22% of the community biomass. The behavior of these bacteria generally was consistent with the biochemical models proposed for PAO, based on studies of lab-scale investigations of enriche

Effect of anaerobic phases length on denitrifying dephosphatation biocenosis - a case study of IFAS-MBSBBR.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to evaluate the influence of the duration times of anaerobic phases on the bacterial biocenosis characterisation while denitrifying dephosphatation in the Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge - Moving-Bed Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor (IFAS-MBSBBR). The experiment was conducted in a laboratory model. The study consisted of four series, which differed in terms of the ratio of the anaerobic phases. duration concerning the overall reaction time in the cycle. The anaerobic phases covered from 18 to 30% of the whole cycle duration. During the reactor performance tha

The metabolic activity of denitrifying microorganisms accumulating polyphosphate in response to addition of fusel oil.

The effect of distillery waste product (fusel oil) as an alternative external organic carbon source (EOCS) was investigated in terms of the metabolic properties of denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAOs). Samples of the non-acclimated biomass were collected from a local full-scale wastewater treatment plant employing A2/O type bioreactors. The acclimated biomass was obtained after cultivation (with fusel oil added) in a bench-scale reactor with a process configuration similar to the full-scale bioreactor. Changes in the functional properties of the biomass were investigated b

Effects of pH and H2O2 on ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate transformations during UV254nm irradiation: Implications to nitrogen removal and analysis.

In order to achieve better removal and analyses of three dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) species via ultraviolet-activated hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) process, this study systematically investigated the rates of photo-oxidations of ammonia/ammonium (NH3/NH4+) and nitrite (NO2-) as well as the photo-reduction of nitrate (NO3-) at varying pH and H2O2 conditions. The results showed that the mass balances of nitrogen were maintained along irradiation despite of interconversions of DIN species, suggesting that no nitrogen gas (N2) or other nitrogen-containing compound was formed. NH3 was more re

Engineered Escherichia coli nrfA Reduces Cadmium Accumulation in Rice by Modulating Bacterial-Driven Nitrogen Cycling and Root Iron Plaque Formation.

Nitrogen supply in the rhizosphere affects cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice. To study bacterial nitrogen transformation effects on Cd uptake in rice, Escherichia coli MG1655 overexpressing nrfA, which encodes cytochrome c nitrite reductase involved in dissimilatory nitrite reduction to ammonium (DNRA), was constructed using a Tn5 transposon system. The nrfA genomic copy number in the engineered strain was approximately 3-fold that in wild-type, and RNA-seq analysis confirmed significantly increased nrfA transcript. Transcriptomics showed enrichment of ribosomes, oxidative phosphorylation, and

Stage-specific nitrous oxide emission responses to different oxygen-supply regimes in anaerobic/oxic/anoxic process treating municipal wastewater.

Nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas, poses a challenge to low-carbon wastewater treatment because of its release during biological nitrogen removal. Aeration regulates nitrogen transformation and N2O emissions in anaerobic/oxic/anoxic (AOA) systems, yet the stage-specific partitioning of these emissions under different oxygen-supply regimes remains unclear. Here, a gas-tight sequencing batch reactor treating real municipal wastewater was successively operated under three combined oxygen-supply regimes: 0.5 L/min for 180 min, 1.0 L/min for 120 min, and 1.5 L/min for 90 min. Unravelling Extremophilic Microbiome Diversity and Functional Dynamics in Hypersaline Environment.

Solar salt pans are extreme hypersaline environments that represent functionally specialised microbial communities mediating essential biogeochemical transformation. Vedaranyam, a coastal region of the Bay of Bengal containing artificially constructed solar salterns for salt production. There is limited information available on the metagenome diversity and functional profiling of this saltpan, which prompted us to investigate it. Here, we report the first whole metagenome sequencing to explore the dynamics of the functional structure of microbial communities in saltpan during the preharvest an

A feature selection and per-indicator modeling framework for forecasting multivariate effluent water quality in wastewater treatment plant.

Accurately predicting effluent water quality indicators in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is critical for mitigating environmental impacts and preventing sudden pollution incidents. However, strong short-term autocorrelation in hourly effluent data can inflate machine learning (ML) performance metrics, and its quantitative impact relative to feature engineering remains poorly understood. This study systematically analyzes the relative contributions of autocorrelation, feature engineering, and feature selection in predicting chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (

Modeling vegetation carbon stock and soil greenhouse gas emission dynamics in undrained degraded peat swamp forests of Indonesia and Peru.

Data on vegetation carbon storage and soil greenhouse gas (GHG) dynamics in degraded undrained peatlands, and their recovery timeframes, are limited. Additionally, despite their important extent across the tropics, these systems remain unconsidered by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change guidelines for GHG inventories. We modified the existing DeNitrification DeComposition model to simulate undegraded and degraded undrained peat swamp forests in Indonesia and Peru. We simulated partial clearing for agroforestry and burning in Indonesia, and in Peru selective timber harvesting and Maur

Effects of biomass feedstock and hydrothermal temperature on the molecular composition and bioavailability of invasive plant-based hydrochar-derived dissolved organic matter.

Hydrothermal carbonization demonstrates a potential for converting invasive plants into multifunctional carbonaceous material. Invasive plant-based hydrochar derived dissolved organic matter (HDOM) becomes an important source of anthropogenic dissolved organic matter, however, the molecular composition and bioavailability of HDOM and the controlling factors were not sufficiently revealed. Thus, in this study, a variety of invasive plants were selected to fabricate hydrochar at different hydrothermal temperatures to investigate the molecular composition via FT-ICR-MS and bioavailability based o

Threshold effects of organic amendment on acidic red soil remediation: Community assembly and core microbiome-mediated metabolic coupling.

To identify the ecological threshold and microbial mechanisms underlying organic amendment (OA)-mediated remediation of acidic red soils, pak choi was employed as a model plant, and a gradient of digestate-derived OA from 0% to 25% was established. This study integrated soil-plant assessment, community assembly modeling, metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), and metabolic network analysis. Both soil functioning and plant growth exhibited nonlinear responses. The optimal OA rate was found to be 15%, which increased the soil quality index and pak choi biomass by 92% and more than 13-fold compared

The impact of polyvinyl chloride microplastics on carbon and nitrogen cycling in peat-forming environments: relevance of the filler additive calcium carbonate (CaCO3).

Peat-forming wetlands (PFW) are crucial in the global C-cycle, yet they are increasingly threatened by various anthropogenic pressures, including microplastic (MP) pollution. We investigate the impacts of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and its additive, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) on organic matter (OM) degradation in PFW. We conducted two experiments: first, by mixing peat soil with increasing concentrations of crushed sanitary PVC-MP (0.3 %, 3 %, and 30 %) and second, by assessing the role of CaCO₃ in modulating these impacts. Our findings revealed significant alterations in peat chemical properties

Strigolactone GR24 modulates citrus root architecture and rhizosphere microbiome under nitrogen and phosphorus deficiency.

Nutrient deficiencies, especially nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) deficiencies, are among the most critical challenges for sustainable crop production. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers contributes to environmental degradation and climate change, highlighting the need for alternative strategies to improve nutrient uptake. Strigolactones (SLs), a class of plant hormones, have emerged as key regulators of root development and plant-microbe interactions under nutrient-limited conditions. In this study, we investigated the effects of the SL analog GR24 on citrus rootstock C-32 under full nutri

Oral Microbiome and Inferred Functions Predict Kaposi's Sarcoma Progression.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a common cancer among people living with HIV and is caused by infection with Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). While previous studies have linked the oral microbiome to KSHV infection and KS development, its role in KS progression remains poorly defined. We performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing targeting the V1-V2 and V3-V4 hypervariable regions to characterize the microbiome in 20 patients with AIDS-associated KS, including 10 with nonprogressive disease and 10 with progressive disease. Samples were obtained from three anatomical sites: oral cavity, periphe

Optimization of municipal solid waste incineration for low-NOx emissions through numerical simulation.

With urbanization, municipal solid waste (MSW) generation is increasing. Traditional landfill methods face land shortages and environmental pollution. Waste incineration, which reduces waste and recovers resources, has become a key management method. However, nitrogen oxides (NOx) produced during incineration severely impact the environment, requiring improved control technologies. This study optimized three denitrification technologies-air staging, flue gas recirculation (FGR), and selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR)-using numerical simulations. The research provides support for improvin

Urban Road Dust as a Microbial Hotspot: Spatial Variation of Bacterial Communities and Metal Associations in the Philippines.

Urban road dust is a reservoir and transport medium for diverse microorganisms, yet its bacterial communities in tropical environments remain poorly understood. This study examined the spatial variation of road dust bacterial communities across three Philippine metropolitan areas: Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, and Metro Cagayan de Oro, spanning the country's three principal island groups. Dust from nine sites was analyzed using 16 S rRNA gene metabarcoding (V3-V4), with community composition, diversity, predicted functional potential (PICRUSt2), and metal associations evaluated; contamination was

CO2-driven algae-bacteria granulation for biological nutrient removal from different treated sewage effluents: role of inoculum source and effluent type.

Residual nitrogen and phosphorus in treated sewage effluent (TSE) remain a critical barrier to safe water reuse in water-stressed regions. Algae-bacteria granular sludge offers a promising polishing technology, yet no prior study has demonstrated its feasibility using CO2 as the sole externally supplied inorganic carbon source for treating real TSE. This study evaluated CO2-driven algae-bacteria granulation in photo-sequencing batch reactors for biological nutrient removal from three real TSE types: ammonium-rich effluent from an anaerobic electrochemical membrane bioreactor and nitrate-rich e
