Risk factors for postpartum depression in women living with HIV attending prevention of mother-to-child transmission clinic at Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi.

Mothers with HIV are at high risk of a range of psychosocial issues that may impact HIV disease progression for themselves and their children. Stigma has also become a substantial barrier to accessing HIV/AIDS care and prevention services. The study objective was to determine the prevalence and severity of postpartum depression (PPD) among women living with HIV and to further understand the impact of stigma and other psychosocial factors in 123 women living with HIV attending prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) clinic at Kenyatta National Hospital located in Nairobi, Kenya. Cardiff puerperal mood and hormone study. III. Postnatal depression at 5 to 6 weeks postpartum, and its hormonal correlates across the peripartum period.

BACKGROUND: We assessed associations of mood at 5-6 weeks postpartum with peripartum saliva cortisol and progesterone profiles. METHOD: A prospective study involved 120 primiparous women free of major marital, socioeconomic and health problems, who collected saliva twice daily from 2 weeks before delivery to day 35 postpartum. This allowed intensive characterisation of cortisol and progesterone profiles. At the conclusion of the study, mood was assessed according to standard criteria. RESULTS: Seven women developed major depression according to DSM-III-R criteria. No associations emerged bet

Associations between hair endocannabinoid concentrations and parental depressive symptoms: A longitudinal study of mothers, fathers, and their offspring up to two years postpartum.

BACKGROUND: About one in five mothers and one in ten fathers experience postpartum depression, with adverse consequences for family health and child development. The aetiology of postpartum depressive symptoms (PPDS) is characterised within a biopsychosocial framework, yet the underlying biological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. The endocannabinoid system (ECS), which interacts with the glucocorticoid system and is implicated in the pathophysiology of depressive disorders, has not yet been investigated in relation to PPDS. Moreover, longitudinal investigations including both mother

Comparative effectiveness and certainty of exercise-based interventions for postpartum depressive symptoms: a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression is a common mental health condition after childbirth that can adversely affect maternal well-being, social functioning, and the mother-infant relationship. Although pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and exercise rehabilitation are available, current evidence is derived mainly from pairwise comparisons, leaving the relative efficacy of different exercise interventions and the certainty of comparative evidence unclear. This study therefore conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis to compare the effects of different exercise rehabilitation interven

Exploring the effects of mental health on bonding and caregiving among pregnant and postpartum persons with likely depression and/or PTSD in South Africa: a qualitative analysis.

Perinatal mental health disorders place a particularly high public health burden on South Africa (SA) via adverse health outcomes for the birthing parent and for their infants, and contribute to emotional and behavioral problems later in childhood. There is little research exploring the anticipated impacts mental health symptoms have on one’s ability to emotionally connect or care for their infant after delivery. HIV-negative pregnant persons were recruited from an antenatal clinic in Cape Town as a part of a larger study investigating mental health barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)

Association between social relationship of mentors and depressive symptoms in first-time mothers during the transition from pregnancy to 6-months postpartum.

BACKGROUND: First-time motherhood is characterized by high psychosocial distress, which untreated, has serious consequences. Informal social support provided by specially trained mentors may be protective against postpartum depressive symptoms but may vary by women's social relationship with the mentor. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of types of mentors on women's depressive symptoms between late pregnancy to 6-months postpartum and the characteristics of women associated with mentor type. METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of data from a community sampl

Intimate partner violence before and during pregnancy: related demographic and psychosocial factors and postpartum depressive symptoms among Mexican American women.

Although research examining intimate partner violence (IPV) has expanded in recent years, there has been relatively little examination of the related demographic and psychosocial factors, as well as mental health outcomes, for IPV before and during pregnancy, especially in a Mexican American population. The current study provides a snapshot of the occurrence of IPV in a community sample of low-income, perinatal Mexican American women (n = 320). Results indicated that 13.1% of the women reported IPV before pregnancy and 11.3% reported IPV during pregnancy. For both IPV before and during pregnan

Postpartum depression among mothers attending postnatal clinics in Bole sub-city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the post-COVID-19 era: A cross-sectional study.

Postpartum depression (PPD) harms maternal and child health. Evidence showed elevated PPD during the COVID-19 pandemic, but post-pandemic data from low-resource urban settings are limited. We measured PPD prevalence and its correlates among mothers attending postnatal clinics in Bole sub-city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during the post-COVID-19 period (data collection: 1 March-30 April 2024). An institution-based cross-sectional study enrolled 410 mothers who delivered 2 weeks-1 year prior, attending five primary health centres. Participants were selected using systematic random sampling, with pro

Healing through self-kindness: Efficacy of compassion-based intervention in enhancing self-esteem, reducing rumination, and alleviating loneliness in primiparous women with postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is associated with low self-esteem, heightened rumination, and loneliness, which represent key cognitive-emotional vulnerability factors perpetuating symptoms, especially in primiparous women. This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of an 8-week group Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) in enhancing self-esteem and reducing rumination and loneliness among primiparous women diagnosed with PPD. Forty-eight participants in a large city in Iran were randomly allocated to CFT (n = 24) or waitlist control (n = 24) using a pretest-posttest design with

Association between the existence of neonatal congenital anomalies and maternal postpartum depression up to 6 months after delivery: The Japan Environment and Children's Study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health concern; however, its association with congenital anomalies (CAs) remains understudied. This study investigated the relationship between CAs and PPD risk and identified persistent patterns of PPD among mothers of infants with and without CAs. METHODS: We analysed data from 86,464 mother-child pairs in the Japan Environment and Children's Study. PPD was assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale at 1 and 6 months postpartum. Bayesian multiple log-binomial regression was used to examine associations between CAs

Comparison of placenta consumers' and non-consumers' postpartum depression screening results using EPDS in US community birth settings (n=6038): a propensity score analysis.

BACKGROUND: Preventing postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common self-reported motivation for human maternal placentophagy, yet very little systematic research has assessed mental health following placenta consumption. Our aim was to compare PPD screening scores of placenta consumers and non-consumers in a community birth setting, using propensity score matching to address anticipated extensive confounding. METHODS: We used a medical records-based data set (n = 6038) containing pregnancy, birth, and postpartum information for US women who planned and completed community births. We first

Higher neutrophil count, higher lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, and lower platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio are independently associated with postpartum depression symptoms in twin pregnancies.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common complication with adverse maternal and child outcomes. Immune-inflammatory dysregulation has been implicated in its pathogenesis, but evidence from twin pregnancies is limited. This study aimed to investigate associations between routine prenatal inflammatory biomarkers and PPD symptoms in women with twin deliveries. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 846 women with twin pregnancies delivered between May 2022 and May 2024 at a tertiary hospital. PPD symptoms were screened within 4 weeks postpartum using the Edinburgh Postnat
