OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to survey the selection, use, and maintenance of chemical protective gloves (CPGs) at real workplaces.
METHODS: Subjects comprised 817 workers using CPGs at seven domestic manufacturing plants in Japan. We administered an anonymous questionnaire survey comprising the following aspect related to CPGs: environment of use, conditions of use, method of selection, knowledge/awareness pertaining to their use, method of use, precautionary measures associated with their use, maximum time of use, and maintenance. We compared responses provided by management staff

BACKGROUND: Rubber additives constitute an important group of contact allergens, particularly in certain occupations.
OBJECTIVES: To collect information regarding the current practice of using a 'rubber series' in Europe, and discuss this against the background of evidence concerning the prevalence of allergy in order to derive a recommendation for a 'European rubber series'.
METHODS: The following were performed: (i) a survey targeting all members of the COST action 'StanDerm' consortium, (ii) analysis of rubber contact allergy data in the database of the European Surveillance System on Con

BACKGROUND: Occupational contact urticaria (CU) from plants is often reported, but it is less often attributed to decorative houseplants. We present an atopic gardener and caretaker of plants who developed CU when occupationally exposed to weeping fig, spathe flower, and yucca.
METHODS: Sensitization was evaluated by skin prick tests (SPT) and analyses for IgE antibodies.
RESULTS: SPT were positive to all three plants, and IgE antibodies were found to weeping fig and spathe flower. SPT were also performed with several decorative houseplants in more than 600 patients. Positive SPT was found t

Health care workers are a known risk group for occupational immediate type allergy to latex gloves, but users of household and other protective gloves have been less extensively studied. This article shows that non-health care workers form an even larger group with natural rubber latex allergy, which often is work related. Hand eczema and atopy are the most frequent risk factors for sensitization, therefore, dermatologists should be especially aware of the diagnostic methods and prevention.

Industrial airborne irritant or allergic contact dermatitis is commonly observed in many factories. Examples of airborne irritants include fibres (such as fibreglass or rockwool), various kinds of dust particles (such as cement, slag, sludge, insulating foam, wood chips), acids and alkalis, gasses and vapours. Airborne contact allergens are unequivocally numerous. The clinical symptoms of both irritant and allergic airborne contact dermatitis are reviewed.

BACKGROUND: The role of physical friction as an irritant in the causation of contact dermatitis is under-recognized. Frictional dermatitis is defined as an eczematous process in which physical frictional trauma contributes to the induction of a dermatitis process.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the clinical background of patients in whom friction was contributing to dermatitis.
METHODS: Over a 30-month period during which 2700 new patients were seen, frictional irritancy was identified as playing a role in the dermatosis in 31 cases: in 27 of these, case notes were evaluated for a range of parameter

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Occupational allergic diseases (OAD) such as occupational contact dermatitis (OCD), occupational asthma (OA), and occupational rhinitis (OR) are the most prevalent occupational diseases in industrialized countries. The purpose of this review is to provide an update about the main occupational metal and solvent exposures related to allergy and airway diseases and to discuss newly defined causative agents and industries in this field.
RECENT FINDINGS: Currently for over 400 causative agents for OA and OCD, several hundreds of agents for OR have been identified. Although many

BACKGROUND: The food industry is a high-risk area for work-related allergic immediate skin reactions (contact urticaria, contact urticaria syndrome, protein contact dermatitis) with or without respiratory symptoms (allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma) due to proteins of animal origin.
OBJECTIVES: The present work gives an overview of allergenic seafood and meat proteins and their clinical and occupational relevance in different work settings.
METHODS: A review of current knowledge and a supplementary selective literature search were performed.
RESULTS: Protein contact dermatitis is one of th

BACKGROUND: In March 2014, the European Commission issued a new regulation restricting the content of hexavalent chromium (Cr) in leather to no more than 3 mg/kg. We previously performed a questionnaire study in January 2014 to characterize our patients with Cr contact allergy prior to regulatory intervention.
OBJECTIVES: To assess whether clinical characteristics, self-reported sources of Cr exposure, and burden of disease changed in patients with Cr allergy over time.
METHODS: A questionnaire study was performed among 172 adult dermatitis patients with Cr allergy and 587 age- and sex-match

Phenol exposure typically causes irritant contact dermatitis with yellow-brown discoloration. A worker developed characteristic discoloration followed by rapidly evolving distant eruptions consistent with an id reaction after phenol exposure. Symptoms resolved with conservative treatment and elimination of exposure. This rare presentation highlights the diagnostic value of yellow-brown discoloration and the importance of prompt occupational history-taking.
