Calmodulin levels in psoriasis and other skin disorders.

Calmodulin was measured in a range of skin disorders characterized by some degree of epidermal hyperproliferation and/or dyskeratinization. In psoriasis the marginal zone of spreading plaques was also investigated. Within the spectrum of diseases we studied, calmodulin increase proved to be rather specific for lesional skin of psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis; high levels were also found in psoriatic scales. Calmodulin increase in the marginal zone of the psoriatic lesion parallelled the sharp morphological demarcation. Although calmodulin may play a role in the maintenance of epidermal hyp

Empiric therapy for bacterial infections: the historical perspective.

The term empiric is defined, and its implications in the treatment of infectious diseases and the selection of beta-lactam antibiotics are discussed. Some changes in the choice of empiric therapy during the last half-century are brought out by a discussion of therapy for selected infections. For some infections the changes (if any) have been only minor; for others, however, the changes have resulted in a progressive decline in mortality, a shortening of the course of the disease, and the reduction or elimination of complications. Among the diseases discussed are seborrheic dermatitis, malaria,

Chemical Profile and Biological Effects of an Herbal Mixture for the Development of an Oil-in-Water Cream.

Three individual hydroalcoholic extracts derived from Hamamelis virginiana leaves, Krameria lappacea root, Salix alba bark, and the resulting herbal mixture (HM) were assessed for the phytochemical profile as well as for antibacterial and cytotoxic potential. The chemical composition of the individual extracts and of their mixture was analyzed by chromatographical (LC-MS) and spectrophotometrical methods. The antimicrobial properties were evaluated by using the agar-well diffusion and the broth microdilution assays, whereas the potential cytotoxicity was investigated on human keratinocyte cell

Mucocutaneous Manifestations of People Living with HIV in Current Antiretroviral Therapy Era.

OBJECTIVE: It has been reported that approximately 90 % of patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have various cutaneous symptoms related to the virus. This study aims to describe the cutaneous disorders that have developed in HIV-infected patients and to investigate the factors that may be related, such as relationships to drug use and CD4 counts. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included people living with HIV and being followed by our hospital's infectious diseases clinic after being referred to the dermatology clinic because of skin lesions. These patients had be

Clinical presentation of psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory disease affecting 1-3% of the world's population. Joints can be affected in up to 30% of patients. About one third of patients have either severe or moderate (involving more than 10% of body surface area) disease. Patients affected with extensive psoriasis have an impaired quality of life. Psoriasis has a large spectrum of clinical features and evolution, so no complete agreement on the classification of the clinical variants exists. Plaque psoriasis is the commonest form (more than 80% of affected patients). The course of plaque psoriasis varies. Spontaneo

Tinea versicolor and Pityrosporum orbiculare: mycological investigations, experimental infections and epidemiological surveys.

In patients with tinea versicolor, Pityrosporum orbiculare was cultured from tinea versicolor lesions in 100%, from normal-looking skin in 80%, and from apparently healed lesions in 69%. P. orbiculare was isolated from normal skin in 85% of patients with seborrheic dermatitis and in 90% of volunteers. The best substrate for isolation of P. orbiculare was a peptone-glucose-yeast extract medium containing glycerol monostearate and Tween 80, overlaid with olive oil. Germ tubes were produced when P. orbiculare was incubated in an atmosphere containing air with 7% CO2. Cultures of P. orbiculare and

Norwegian scabies mimicking rupioid psoriasis.

Norwegian scabies is a highly contagious skin infestation caused by an ectoparasite, Scarcoptes scabiei var. Hominis, which mainly affects immunosuppressed individuals. Clinically, it may simulate various dermatoses such as psoriasis, Darier's disease, seborrheic dermatitis, among others. This is a case report of a 33-year-old woman, immunocompetent, diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (cancer phobia), who had erythematous, well-defined plaques, covered with rupioid crusts, on her neck, axillary folds, breast, periumbilical region, groin area, besides upper back and elbows, mimicking a

A case of linear IgA bullous dermatosis with atypical clinical and ultrastructural manifestations.

We report a case of linear IgA bullous dermatosis which presented with atypical clinical and ultrastructural findings. The patient initially manifested small, subepidermal blisters scattered only in the seborrheic region. On follow-up, grouped vesicles developed in a circular form similar to dermatitis herpetiformis. They subsided after treatment with diaminodiphenyl sulphon. Immunofluorescent study showed predominant linear IgA deposits accompanied with IgG and C3 along the basement membrane zone. These deposits existed at the floor of the blister. Ultrastructurally, immunoreactants were demo

Whole coal tar shampoo: a therapeutic hair repair system.

An alkaline whole coal tar shampoo has been clinically re-evaluated for its therapeutic and cosmetic properties. Its efficacy, as anticipated, is confirmed in psoriasis, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and pruritus. Scanning electron microscopy reveals the whole coal tar shampoo's ability to repair hair similar to protein cosmetic shampoos. Body, luster, and manageability improved throughout this eight week study. A new shampoo action was recorded, described as "corrective;" both oily-haired and dry-haired persons simultaneously exhibit substantial improvement towards the norm. It is postulat

Urea: a comprehensive review of the clinical literature.

INTRODUCTION: Urea is an organic compound that has been used clinically for dermatological diseases for more than a century. Urea is a potent emollient and keratolytic agent, making urea an effective monotherapy for conditions associated with dry and scaly skin. A systematic review of the literature is needed to provide clinicians with evidence-based applications of urea in the treatment of dermatological diseases. METHODS: A PubMed search was conducted using the term "urea" combined with "skin," "ichthyosis," "psoriasis," "xerosis," "emollient," "onychomycosis," "dermatitis," and "avulsion."

PERIORAL DERMATITIS: STILL A THERAPEUTIC CHALLENGE.

Perioral dermatitis is a common and often chronic dermatosis. In its classic form, it primarily affects women aged 15 to 45 years, but there are also variants including lupus-like and granulomatous perioral dermatitis, where granulomatous form is more common in childhood and affects mostly prepubescent boys. The etiopathogenesis of the disease remains unclear, but there is a frequent finding of prolonged use of topical products, especially corticosteroids, in the treatment of rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis, preceding the clinical manifestation of perioral dermatitis. Other causes important

Classification of diaper dermatitis: an overview.

Several types of diaper dermatitis are discussed: generic diaper dermatitis is most common and involves a simple erythema and mild scaling of the gluteal crease, buttocks, thighs, and lower abdomen. Candidal diaper dermatitis involves clinically significant infection with Candida albicans and presents as a sharply marginated area of erythema with significant involvement of the anterior thighs, genital creases, abdomen, and genitalia. Noduloulcerative diaper dermatitis may develop in a small percentage of patients who have chronic diaper dermatitis, as large, raised erosions with rolled margins

Physiological and microbiological verification of the benefit of hair washing in patients with skin conditions of the scalp.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether hair washing is effective against scalp eruption and pruritus caused by seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis vulgaris. AIMS: To assess whether a proper hair-washing regimen, including the use of antibacterial shampoo, can ameliorate scalp eruption symptoms and alter the composition of the scalp microflora. METHODS: Eighteen patients with seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis vulgaris scalp eruptions were instructed in proper techniques of daily hair washing, rinsing, and shampooing, which they underwent for 12 weeks. They used control shampoo in weeks 1-4 and 9-1

Allergic dermatoses associated with chronic opisthorchiasis during antihelminthic therapy.

We studied skin biopsy specimens from patients with allergic dermatoses associated with opisthorchiasis. Structural changes in the epidermis and derma were presented by degenerative and destructive changes in epitheliocytes with a pronounced membranolytic component, hemodynamic disturbances in the derma, disorganization of the connective tissue, and progressive fibrosis. Combination therapy including antihelmintic drug produced a positive effect, which was associated with induction of regenerative processes in basal epidermal cells, stabilization of the basal membrane, and normalization of the

Statistical and comparative study of 4600 patients tested in Barcelona (1973-1977).

The authors show the results obtained during the 5-year period 1973-1977 in 4600 patch tested patients in the Allergy Department of Barcelona University. The results obtained with the most common allergens (nickel sulfate, potassium dichromate, para compounds, cobalt and rubber) are studied separately. The results of testing with the allergens with a low incidence of positives are also shown. The results are compared with those published by the NACDG on 1200 patients and by Brun in Geneva on 1000 patients; 5.02% of the tested patients showed sensitization to benzidine.

[Skin lipids in seborrhea- and sebostasis-associated skin diseases].

Recent studies suggest that epidermal skin lipids play an important role in the pathogenesis of skin diseases associated with seborrhoea or sebostasis. Depending on the state of the skin, various lipids are found in varying quantities and proportions. In some sebostatic diseases, in particular, altered enzyme activities relevant to the synthesis of lipids have been identified, which may account for alterations in epidermal lipid fractions. This concept represents a substantial modification of earlier ones, according to which sebostatic or seborrhoeic skin diseases were attributed solely to dec
