The male urethral diverticulum is a rare affection. The authors report one case of traumatic urethral diverticula. The diagnosis was confirmed by urethrocystography. The postoperative follow-up was good after resection of the diverticulum and urethrography. On the basis of this case, the authors discuss the diagnosis and therapeutic aspects of this disease.

A case of perforation of a congenital sigmoid diverticulum producing diffuse peritonitis in a 4-year-old boy is presented. Physical examination showed an acute abdomen despite a normal computed tomography study. Successful surgical treatment was achieved by excision of the diverticulum, adjacent bowel, and an end-to-end anastomosis.

The urethral diverticulum has many varied presentations; therefore, ultimate diagnosis may be difficult. Until recently, radiographic evaluation was difficult to perform, was uncomfortable for the patient, and had poor sensitivity. Giant colonic diverticulum is a rare complication of colonic diverticulosis. It typically occurs as a single diverticulum located on the antimesenteric border of the sigmoid colon. The authors performed a retrospective analysis of 108 operations performed because of Meckel's diverticulum from Jan. 1, 1980 until Dec. 31, 1997. 87 incidental operations were performed (80.55%) and 21 operations were performed (19.54%) because of complications of Meckel's diverticulum. Of the 87 incidental cases, 44 were males and 43 were females. The diverticulum was resected in 70 cases, was inverted in 16 patients and was left untouched in 1 patient. Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital abnormality of the intestinal tract, occurring in 2% of autoptic studies. The case of an 85-year-old man referred to the Emergency Surgery Unit for intestinal obstruction and lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding is reported. Surgical exploration revealed a complicated Meckel's diverticulum full of coproliths, immersed in pus and blood. Examination of the resected diverticulum showed necrotic diverticulitis in the absence of ectopic gastric or pancreatic tissues.

The authors present a case of a Meckel's diverticulum identified during a routine prenatal ultrasound examination as a complex mass, superior and posterior to the urinary bladder, that prompted meticulous postnatal evaluation. A 4.0-cm Meckel's diverticulum containing heterotopic gastric mucosa was excised before complications could arise. Meckel's diverticulum should be included in the differential of a complex intraabdominal mass of the fetus/neonate.
