BACKGROUND: An IgE-mediated contact reaction to airborne allergens has been suggested as one important pathogenetic mechanism in atopic dermatitis (AD). The house-dust mite (HDM) might be a common allergen involved. In Scandinavia, sensitization to HDM has been rare, probably because of the cold, dry climate. However, recent studies indicate high levels of domestic mites and HDM allergen in 15-20% of homes in central and northern Sweden.

Mineral dust-induced production of reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs) by human monocyte-derived macrophages was investigated using lucigenin-dependent chemiluminescence. Chrysotile asbestos alone caused only weak ROM production by macrophages, but the addition of polyclonal immunoglobulin enhanced the reaction strongly. In 31 subjects with an occupational exposure to dust pesticides the levels of PZ-peptidase, alpha-1-antitrypsin, alpha-2-macroglobulin were determined. A decrease of PZ-peptidase and an increase of alpha-1-antitrypsin, alpha-2-macroglobulin were found in comparison with a control group of 30 healthy volunteers.

Dust samples from 30 patients suffering from an aspergillus sinusitis and from 20 healthy persons were analysed for moulds as a possible cause of mycotic sinusitis. Questionnaires were also distributed to assess the ecological environment of the patients. Mycological analyses of the dust samples showed no statistical difference in the presence of moulds, especially those of Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger.
