Brain correlates of risky decision-making.

Understanding the neurocognitive basis of risk-taking behavior is an important issue, especially in economic decision-making. Classical behavioral studies have shown that risk-attitude changes across different contexts, but little is so far known about the brain correlates of processing of outcomes across such context shifts. In this study, EEG was recorded while subjects performed a gambling task. Participants could choose between a risky and a safer option, within two different contexts: one in which options yielded gains and losses of the same magnitude (Zero Expected Value context) and ano

Behavioral health problems as barriers to work: results from a 6-year panel study of welfare recipients.

Over the course of welfare reform, behavioral health problems have emerged as significant issues. Welfare time limits have added urgency to recipients' efforts to obtain economic self-sufficiency and have raised new concerns about mental health and substance abuse problems as barriers to work. However, there is limited research on how behavioral health problems operate to impede the employability of welfare recipients. This analysis draws on data from a 6-year panel study of welfare recipients (n = 341) to examine how a broad spectrum of mental health and substance abuse problems impact effort

Perilous Pathways: Unveiling the Interplay of Poverty, Catastrophic Health Expenditure, and Intimate Partner Violence in Ethiopia.

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a pervasive global issue with profound social, economic, and public health implications. Based on primary data collected with household heads and women aged 18 to 59 years in Ethiopia, this study aims to understand the association between poverty, catastrophic health expenditure (CHE), and IPV. IPV prevalence was estimated by probing if women experienced specific behaviors of economic, psychological, physical, and sexual violence. To measure poverty, this study employs five distinct methods. Firstly, it utilizes household expenditure data to calculate the nat

Spatiotemporal analysis of 11 years of Chlamydia trachomatis data from southern China.

BACKGROUND: Urogenital Chlamydia trachomatis is the most prevalent bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) globally. Reviews suggest high and persistently endemic STI epidemics in low and middle income countries. However population-based prevalence estimates in these settings are less common, underscoring the need for analyses of available data to characterize patterns of disease burden. We identified spatio-temporal clusters and key behavioral, social, or environmental factors contribution to transmission in order to inform the prioritization and targeting of evidence based interventio

The Association Between Hearing Impairment and Problem Behaviors in 11-Year-Old Pacific Children Living in New Zealand.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing impairment in childhood is a serious disability that can impose a heavy social and economic burden on individuals and families. It was hypothesized that hearing loss or middle ear disease in 11-year-old Pacific children living in New Zealand would be associated with higher levels of engagement in (1) delinquent behaviors, and (2) clinical level internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors than Pacific children with no hearing loss or middle ear disease. Based on earlier findings, peer pressure, self-perception, physical punishment (slapping), sex, and ethnicity were co

Enhancing vaccine acceptance: a mixed methods approach to health promotion and willingness to pay among low-income Vietnamese communities.

BACKGROUND: This inquiry assesses the willingness to pay (WTP) for a COVID-19 vaccination in Vietnam, and uses a mixed-method approach to investigate how economic, social, and health factors influence acceptance of a vaccine and payment preferences. METHODS: The research agenda was implemented via a Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) with 685 Vietnamese respondents aged 18 years and older from June to September 2024, to measure preferences based on vaccine attributes such as cost, safety, side effects, and duration of protection. WTP was estimated using Binary Logistic Regression. In addition,

Evaluation of Claw Lesions in Beef Cattle Slaughtered in Northern Portugal: A Preliminary Study.

Claw diseases have a profound impact on cattle welfare, affecting behaviors such as grazing, rumination, rest, decubitus, and water consumption. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of claw lesions and classify them according to the ICAR Claw Health Atlas (International Committee of Animal Recording) in two slaughterhouses. The influence of claw lesions on carcass weight, classification, and fat deposition was also examined. Involving 343 crossbreed cattle from 103 different extensive or semi-intensive farms, this study found an animal prevalence of claw disorders at 65.8%, with a higher

Cannabis in Adolescence: Lasting Cognitive Alterations and Underlying Mechanisms.

Cannabis consumption during adolescence is an area of particular concern, owing to changes in the social and political perception of the drug, and presents a scientific, medical, and economic challenge. Major social and economic interests continue to push toward cannabis legalization as well as pharmaceutical development. As a result, shifting perceptions of both legal and illicit cannabis use across the population have changed the collective evaluation of the potential dangers of the product. The wave of cannabis legalization therefore comes with new responsibility to educate the public on po

Epidemiology of heart failure in sub-Saharan Africa.

Heart failure has emerged as a dominant form of cardiovascular disease in Africa, and has great social and economic relevance owing to its high prevalence, mortality and impact on young, economically active individuals. The causes of heart failure in Africans remain largely nonischemic. Hypertension, cardiomyopathy, rheumatic heart disease, chronic lung disease and pericardial disease are the main contributors to the etiology of cardiac failure in sub-Saharan Africa, accounting for over 90% of cases. Hypertensive heart disease complications occur more frequently in Africans and the majority of

Pharmacies, self-medication and pharmaceutical marketing in Bombay, India.

Studies of pharmaceutical practice have called attention to the role played by pharmacists and pharmacy attendants in fostering self-medication and medicine experimentation among the public. Left undocumented is the extent to which clients passively follow the advice of pharmacy personnel or question their motive or expertise. While research has focused on pharmacists and pharmacy attendants as agents encouraging self-medication and medicine experimentation, adequate attention has not been paid to pharmacist-client interactions that are sensitive to the social, cultural, and economic context i

Management of refractory OAB in the non-neurogenic patient.

Overactive bladder (OAB) is one of the most common bothersome urological diseases. It also has a negative economic impact. Pathophysiology entails changes in neurogenic and myogenic factors, as well as urinary biomarkers such as nerve growth factor (NGF) and prostaglandins (PGs). With symptoms from OAB-Dry to OAB-Wet, the urodynamic pattern of OAB bladder is often characterized by idiopathic detrusor overactivity with lower threshold of sensation, diminished compliance and capacity. Treatment ranges from a combination of behavioral modifications (BM)/ pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) to com

Correlates of past homelessness in the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

This study sought to investigate correlates of past homelessness, especially mental illness and substance abuse, using data from the National epidemiological survey on alcohol and related conditions (NESARC), a large nationally representative survey conducted in 2001-2002. Multivariate analyses showed that the factors most strongly related to past homelessness were diagnoses of behavioral health conditions which showed consistently stronger association than sociodemographic characteristics, measures of economic well being, or general health indicators. The results presented here confirm in a n

Search for Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) behaviorally active compounds in Aspergillus flavus (Eurotiales: Aspergillaceae)-infected grain.

Application of insecticides for pest control must be minimized due to well-known risks to human health. Application of environmentally friendly means is the best option. For stored product pests' control, new means are needed alongside a deep understanding of the ecology and behavior of the pests. The present study investigated whether the odor released from wheat grain infected by mold fungus Aspergillus flavus (Eurotiales: Aspergillaceae) influences the behavior of the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)), a stored product pest of economic importance with worldwi

Toward a unified process model of situational frustration, need deprivation, and behavioral compensation: A meta-analytic review.

The literature on situational frustrations, need deprivations, and behavioral compensations spans numerous research areas, such as the literature on social exclusion, intergroup frustrations, goal obstruction, and economic hardship, just to name a few. Here, we integrate this literature (2,883 effects from 884 samples; total N = 621,425). Samples were predominantly drawn from Western contexts (87.56%), with more limited representation from non-Western contexts. Meta-analytic structural equation modeling supports the basic model where situational frustrations link to need deprivation and subseq

Social and emotional skills and different bullying behavior of students: serial mediating role of perceived relationships with teachers and sense of belonging at school.

Social and emotional skills (SES) represent essential developmental competencies for the 21st century that have garnered increasing attention for their potential role in bullying prevention. This study explores the relationship between SES and bullying behaviors among students, particularly emphasizing the mediating roles of perceived relationships with teachers (PRT) and sense of belonging at school (SBS). Using data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)’s 2019 Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES), the research analyzed a sample of 3,580 15-year-old stu

Multilevel impact of cocaine on honeybees: From neurochemistry and mitochondrial dysfunction to superorganism.

Cocaine abuse remains a serious global problem with far-reaching health, economic, social, and criminal consequences. Therefore, continued research on the mechanisms underlying cocaine effects is highly desirable. Utilizing invertebrate models in this field offers significant practical advantages, while a comparative approach can further broaden the understanding of fundamental physiological principles. This study highlights the honeybee Apis mellifera as a promising model for investigating the effects of single cocaine dose at both the individual and collective/social levels. Our results show

Binge Eating Disorder and Metabolic Syndrome: Shared Mechanisms and Clinical Implications.

Background: Binge eating disorder (BED) is characterized by episodes of uncontrollable eating, defined by the rapid consumption of large quantities of food over a short period. This condition is associated with a variety of psychological and non-psychological factors, including behavioral, biological, genetic, neurological, and pharmacological influences, all of which adversely affect patients' daily lives. BED is linked to numerous health consequences, such as obesity, atherosclerosis, diabetes, chronic pain, and hypertension. Although BED is not exclusive to individuals with obesity, it is m

Socioeconomic determinants of protective behaviors and contact patterns in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era: A cross-sectional study in Italy.

Socioeconomic inequalities significantly influence infectious disease outcomes, as seen with COVID-19, but the pathways through which socioeconomic conditions affect transmission dynamics remain unclear. To address this, we conducted a survey representative of the Italian population, stratified by age, gender, geographical area, city size, employment status, and education level. The survey's final aim was to estimate differences in contact and protective behaviors across various population strata, both of which are crucial for understanding transmission dynamics. Our initial insights based on
