Quantitative analysis of shear wave elastic heterogeneity for prediction of lymphovascular invasion in breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation between elastic heterogeneity (EH) and lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in breast cancers and assess the clinical value of using EH to predict LVI pre-operatively. METHODS: This retrospective study consisted of 376 patients with breast cancers that had undergone shear wave elastography (SWE) with virtual touch tissue imaging quantification between June 2017 and June 2018. The EH was determined as the difference between the averaged three highest and three lowest shear wave value. Clinicalpathological parameters including histological type and grades, LVI, a

Defining length stability in paediatric femoral shaft fractures treated with titanium elastic nails.

INTRODUCTION: Optimal paediatric femoral shaft fracture patterns or lengths amenable to titanium elastic nail stabilization have not been well defined. The purpose of this study is to identify radiographic parameters predictive of treatment failure with flexible intramedullary nails based upon fracture morphology. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of all femoral shaft fractures treated with flexible intramedullary nails over a five-year period. All patients with at least six weeks of postoperative radiographic imaging were included. Fracture characteristics included location, patt

Anisotropic elastic behavior of a hydrogel-coated electrospun polyurethane: Suitability for heart valve leaflets.

Although xenograft biomaterials have been used for decades in replacement heart valves, they continue to face multiple limitations, including limited durability, mineralization, and restricted design space due to their biological origins. These issues necessitate the need for novel replacement heart valve biomaterials that are durable, non-thrombogenic, and compatible with transcatheter aortic valve replacement devices. In this study, we explored the suitability of an electrospun poly(carbonate urethane) (ES-PCU) mesh coated with a poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel as a synthet

Linear elastic and hyperelastic studies of equine hoof mechanical response at different hydration levels.

Most simulation studies on equine hoof biomechanics employed linear elastic (LE) material models. However, the equine hoof wall's stress-strain relationship is nonlinear and varies with hydration level. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the accuracy of the LE model compared to more advanced material models, such as hyperelastic (HE) or viscoelastic models. The current research investigated performances of LE and three HE models (Mooney-Rivlin, Neo-Hookean, and Marlow) in describing equine hoof's mechanical behavior using finite element (FE) analysis. In the first attempt, a rectangular

Effects of Gouge Fill on Elastic Wave Propagation in Equivalent Continuum Jointed Rock Mass.

The presence of gouge in rock joints significantly affects the physical and mechanical properties of the host rock mass. Wave-based exploration techniques have been widely used to investigate the effects of gouge fill on rock mass properties. Previous research on wave propagation in gouge-filled joints focused on analytical and theoretical methods. The lack of experimental methods for multiple rock joint systems, however, has limited the verification potential of the proposed models. In this study, the effects of gouge material and thickness on wave propagation in equivalent continuum jointed

Elastic property of sickle cell anemia and sickle cell trait red blood cells.

SIGNIFICANCE: We introduce a model for better calibration of the trapping force using an equal but oppositely directed drag force acting on a trapped red blood cell (RBC). We demonstrate this approach by studying RBCs' elastic properties from deidentified sickle cell anemia (SCA) and sickle cell trait (SCT) blood samples. AIM: A laser trapping (LT) force was formulated and analytically calculated in a cylindrical model. Using this trapping force relative percent difference, the maximum (longitudinal) and minimum (transverse) radius rate and stiffness were used to study the elasticity. APPROA…

Experimental study on the influence of locked-in stress on the uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of rocks.

The rock contains many inclusions which produce high locked-in stress under the ground stress. In order to study the influence of locked-in stress on the mechanical properties of rocks, the rock-like materials and nitrile rubber particles are used to make a test block of the rock-like model which contains inclusions. The rubber particles will expand as the test block is heated, which creates locked-in stress in the inclusions. Uniaxial compression tests of similar model blocks with different locked-in stresses and different inclusion contents were performed by using a water bath and MTS-5T uni

Volume Elastic Modulus, Vascular Function, and Vascular Structure in Patients with Cardiovascular Risk Factors.

AIMS: Volume elastic modulus (VE), an index of arterial elasticity, and arterial diameter of the brachial artery can be automatically measured by a newly developed oscillometric device. We investigated the associations of VE with flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD), an index of endothelium-dependent vasodilation, nitroglycerine-induced vasodilation (NID), an index of endothelium-independent vasodilation, and intima-media thickness (IMT) of the brachial artery and association of oscillometrically measured brachial artery diameter with ultrasonographically measured brachial artery diameter in patie…

Does Dynamic Intermaxillary Fixation With Elastics Improve Outcomes Following Unilateral Condylar Fracture?

PURPOSE: The use of rigid versus semi-rigid intermaxillary fixation (IMF) following subcondylar fractures is controversial. This study aims to investigate whether the "dynamic" elastic fixation technique improves the outcomes, compared to the rigid fixation technique for the treatment of displaced subcondylar fractures in adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This nonblinded randomized clinical trial was performed on adult patients with unilateral displaced mandibular subcondylar fractures. Patients were randomly allocated into two groups (n = 17). The primary predictor variable was wire versus elas

Numerical Analysis of Fatigue Crack Growth Path and Life Predictions for Linear Elastic Material.

The main objective of this work was to present a numerical modelling of crack growth path in linear elastic materials under mixed-mode loadings, as well as to study the effect of presence of a hole on fatigue crack propagation and fatigue life in a modified compact tension specimen under constant amplitude loading condition. The ANSYS Mechanical APDL 19.2 is implemented for accurate prediction of the crack propagation paths and the associated fatigue life under constant amplitude loading conditions using a new feature in ANSYS which is the smart crack growth technique. The Paris law model has

Rejuvenation of Zr-Based Bulk Metallic Glasses by Ultrasonic Vibration-Assisted Elastic Deformation.

The rejuvenation of Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) by ultrasonic vibration-assisted elastic deformation (UVEF) was studied herein. The UVEF-treated samples demonstrate an obvious rejuvenation and have a higher relaxation enthalpy and a smaller range of supercooled liquid regions than the as-cast samples. The fracture of the rejuvenated amorphous alloy is mainly ductile fracture, and shear deformation occurs in the deformation region. It is also found that as the amplitude increases, the free volume of the rejuvenated amorphous alloy increases, the yield strength and the

Limitations in Use of Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing (ESIN) in Children with Disorders of Bone Mineralization.

BACKGROUND: Elastic intramedullary nails (ESIN) have been the treatment of choice in many long bone fractures in children for more than 20 years. The introduction of ESIN has drastically reduced tissue traumatization during fracture fixation procedures and decreased the risk of growth cartilage damage, as well as allowing for preservation of the natural biology of closed fracture healing. The objective of the present report is to draw attention to a small group of patients with bone mineralization disorders, who consequently demonstrate decreased mechanical resistance of the skeletal system, i

Elastic fibers in orthopedics: Form and function in tendons and ligaments, clinical implications, and future directions.

Elastic fibers are an essential component of the extracellular matrix of connective tissues. The focus of both clinical management and scientific investigation of elastic fiber disorders has centered on the cardiovascular manifestations due to their significant impact on morbidity and mortality. As such, the current understanding of the orthopedic conditions experienced by these patients is limited. The musculoskeletal implications of more subtle elastic fiber abnormalities, whether due to allelic variants or age-related tissue degeneration, are also not well understood. Recent advances have b
