Adaptive Stimulation Profiles Modulation for Foot Drop Correction Using Functional Electrical Stimulation: A Proof of Concept Study.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) provides an effective way for foot drop (FD) correction. To overcome the redundant and blind stimulation problems in the state-of-the-art methods, this study proposes a closed-loop scheme for an adaptive electromyography (EMG)-modulated stimulation profile. The developed method detects real-time angular velocity during walking. It provides feedbacks to a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network for predicting synchronous tibialis anterior (TA) EMG. Based on the prediction, it modulates the stimulation intensity, taking into account of the subject-spe

Russian Stimulation/Functional Electrical Stimulation in the Treatment of Foot Drop Resulting from Lumbar Radiculopathy: A Case Series.

Several studies have debated the rehabilitation merits of functional electrical stimulation (FES) for the treatment of spinal radiculopathies. Many of the related studies have been performed on elite athletes. We utilized the Russian stimulation in three cases to improve outcomes in foot drop secondary to lumbar radiculopathy. These stimulations had positive results, giving patients an increase in strength in the lower limbs after each session. These outcomes suggest that Russian stimulation has potential as an affordable option in the rehabilitation of foot drop from lumbar radiculopathy when

Different effects of tetanic stimulation of facial nerve and ulnar nerve on transcranial electrical stimulation motor-evoked potentials.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine whether prior tetanic stimulation of cranial nerves enhances the amplitudes of transcranial motor-evoked potentials (MEPs). METHODS: Thirty patients undergoing elective craniotomy under propofol-fentanyl anesthesia with partial neuromuscular blockade were enrolled. Both control and posttetanic MEPs (c-MEPs and p-MEPs) monitoring were performed with a train of five pulses delivered to C3 or C4. c-MEPs were recorded from target muscles and p-MEPs were obtained 1 s after tetanic stimulation to the ulnar nerves and facial nerves. The amplitudes of paired ME

Surface electrical stimulation for treating swallowing disorders after stroke: a review of the stimulation intensity levels and the electrode placements.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) for treating dysphagia is a relatively new therapeutic method. There is a paucity of evidence about the use of NMES in patients with dysphagia caused by stroke. The present review aimed to introduce and discuss studies that have evaluated the efficacy of this method amongst dysphagic patients following stroke with emphasis on the intensity of stimulation (sensory or motor level) and the method of electrode placement on the neck. The majority of the reviewed studies describe some positive effects of the NMES on the neck musculature in the swallowing p

Pain relief achieved by transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and/or vibratory stimulation in a case of painful legs and moving toes.

A patient is described with painful legs and moving toes. The pain had been occurring for more than 15 years, and a variety of therapies had been attempted with only partial, if any, success. Only morphine had succeeded in relieving the pain, but it had to be discontinued to avoid tolerance and dependence. We devised a treatment consisting of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), vibratory stimulation (VS), and a combination of the two methods (TENS + VS). TENS brought about partial pain relief, but was less effective than VS; dual stimulation (TENS + VS) led to complete alleviat

Combined Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Functional Electrical Stimulation for Upper Limbs in Individuals with Stroke: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) are established interventions to enhance upper limb motor function (ULMF) in people with stroke (PwS). However, evidence supporting their combined use remains limited and inconsistent. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of combined tDCS and FES for improving ULMF, activity, and participation in PwS. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across MEDLINE, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, CENTRAL, SCOPUS, and Web of Science from inception to December 2024. Randomized and controll

Tinnitus Suppression with Electrical Stimulation at the Most Basal Contact of the Cochlear Implant Electrode as a Model for Round Window Stimulation.

The objective of this research was to test whether efficient tinnitus suppression could be achieved by electrical stimulation of the single most basal electrode contact of a cochlear implant. This approach simulates the effects of electrical stimulation using a round-window electrode. The study was performed in 10 adult cochlear implant patients showing complete or almost complete tinnitus suppression during electrical stimulation with their standard fitting-MAP. In all patients, tinnitus appeared again when the implant was switched off. Five Nucleus implant (1 CI532, 4 CI24RE CA) users and 5

Step capacitive array sensor to trigger stimulation on Functional Electrical Stimulators devices for Drop Foot: Preliminary results.

In this work, a new custom wireless capacitive step sensor and a real-time algorithm are proposed to detect the start and end of the swing phase of the gait to trigger the stimulation in Functional Electrical Stimulator devices (FES) for Drop Foot. For this, an array of capacitive pressure sensors was designed to detect patterns of the gait swing phase through the Heel Center of Pressure (HCOP). The proposed system recognized all the events with an average error of 20.86±0.02[ms] for the heel strike (initial contact) and 27.60±0.03[ms] for the heel-off (final contact) compared with lower-back

Effectiveness of electrical stimulation on nerve regeneration after crush injury: Comparison between invasive and non-invasive stimulation.

Several studies have investigated the use of invasive and non-invasive stimulation methods to enhance nerve regeneration, and varying degrees of effectiveness have been reported. However, due to the use of different parameters in these studies, a fair comparison between the effectiveness of invasive and non-invasive stimulation methods is not possible. The present study compared the effectiveness of invasive and non-invasive stimulation using similar parameters. Eighteen Sprague Dawley rats were classified into three groups: the iES group stimulated with fully implantable device, the tES group

Computational Modeling of Neurotransmitter Release Evoked by Electrical Stimulation: Nonlinear Approaches to Predicting Stimulation-Evoked Dopamine Release.

Neurochemical changes evoked by electrical stimulation of the nervous system have been linked to both therapeutic and undesired effects of neuromodulation therapies used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, stroke, hypertension, tinnitus, and many other indications. In fact, interest in better understanding the role of neurochemical signaling in neuromodulation therapies has been a focus of recent government- and industry-sponsored programs whose ultimate goal is to usher in an era of personalized medicine by creating neuromodulation therapies that

Randomized clinical trial of percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation versus sham electrical stimulation in patients with faecal incontinence.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to assess the effects of percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) in the treatment of faecal incontinence (FI) by means of an RCT. METHODS: Patients aged over 18 years with FI were included in a multicentre, single-blinded RCT. The primary endpoint was reduction in the median or mean number of FI episodes per week. Secondary endpoints were changes in measures of FI severity, and disease-specific and generic quality of life. Outcomes were compared between PTNS and sham stimulation after 9 weeks of treatment. RESULTS: A higher proportion of patients in the PTNS (13

Wireless micro current stimulation--an innovative electrical stimulation method for the treatment of patients with leg and diabetic foot ulcers.

Clinical experience with a new electrical stimulation (ES) technique, the wireless micro current stimulation (WMCS), for the treatment of chronic wounds is described. WMCS transfers the current to any surface wound from a distance, by using oxygen's and nitrogen's ability to exchange electrons. We studied 47 patients with hard-to-heal wounds. Patients with venous, arterial and mixed leg ulcers were predominant; other aetiologies such as diabetic foot lesions, pressure ulcers, vasculitis and pyoderma were also included. WMCS treatment protocol specified treatment twice or thrice per week, for 4

Advances in the Use of Neuromodulation for Neurogenic Dysphagia: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Application of Pharyngeal Electrical Stimulation, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation.

Purpose The swallowing motor system and, specifically, its cortical substrates appear to have certain unique properties that make it highly susceptible to brain plasticity, both driven and following injury. Furthermore, neurogenic dysphagia is a common complication of brain disease, associated with poor outcomes, and yet treatment options remain limited. Therefore, translating the physiology of neurostimulation into clinical populations becomes imperative. In this review, we describe therapeutic application of neuroplasticity in the human swallowing motor system by initially examining the role

Effects of repetitive facilitative exercise with neuromuscular electrical stimulation, vibratory stimulation and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the hemiplegic hand in chronic stroke patients.

AIM: Repetitive facilitative exercise (RFE) is a developed approach to the rehabilitation of hemiplegia. RFE can be integrated with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), direct application of vibratory stimulation (DAVS) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). The aims of the present study were to retrospectively compare the effects of RFE and NMES, DAVS with those of RFE and rTMS, and to determine the maximal effect of the combination of RFE with NMES, DAVS, rTMS and pharmacological treatments in stroke patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Thirty-three stroke patients were

Axial current steering modulates lens pathology-dependent intraocular electric convergence under temporally interfering electrical stimulation: a computational analysis.

Temporal Interference Stimulation (TIS) is a low invasive technique for retinal modulation that utilizes the interference of high-frequency electric fields. Compared to conventional transcorneal electrical stimulation, TIS, by virtue of its enhanced depth penetration capabilities, enables selective modulation of deep-seated central retina, thereby establishing itself as a promising precise-therapeutic modality for diverse retinal pathologies. Clinically, retinal pathologies frequently coexist with concurrent lens pathologies. However, the functional efficacy of TIS in ocular systems with lens

Electric field stimulation directs target-specific axon regeneration and partial restoration of vision after optic nerve crush injury.

Failure of central nervous system (CNS) axons to regenerate after injury results in permanent disability. Several molecular neuro-protective and neuro-regenerative strategies have been proposed as potential treatments but do not provide the directional cues needed to direct target-specific axon regeneration. Here, we demonstrate that applying an external guidance cue in the form of electric field stimulation to adult rats after optic nerve crush injury was effective at directing long-distance, target-specific retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axon regeneration to native targets in the diencephalon.

Temporally interfering electric fields brain stimulation in primary motor cortex of mice promotes motor skill through enhancing neuroplasticity.

Temporal interference (TI) electric field brain stimulation is a novel neuromodulation technique that enables the non-invasive modulation of deep brain regions, but few advances about TI stimulation effectiveness and mechanisms have been reported. Conventional transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can enhance motor skills, whether TI stimulation has an effect on motor skills in mice has not been elucidated. In the present study, TI stimulation was proved to stimulating noninvasively primary motor cortex (M1) of mice, and that TI stimulation with an envelope wave frequency of 20 H

Outcomes of para-sacral transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation in treatment of primary and refractory overactive bladder among children.

BACKGROUND: Overactive bladder (OAB) is the most prevalent lower urinary tract dysfunction among children. Refractory OAB lacks response to the first line treatments, including anticholinergic, and it is a major clinical challenge. This study aims to compare the efficacy of para-sacral transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (PS-TENS) in the treatment of primary and refractory OAB among children. METHODS: A prospective, randomized clinical study included 64 children aged 5-12 years with OAB divided equally into two groups: group (1) included 32 children with treatment-naive OAB, while group
