Enhanced Detection of Electrolyte Microleaks by Reduced-Pressure Ion Mobility Spectrometry.

Electrolyte leakage is an early indicator of sealing failure and a potential safety risk in lithium-ion batteries, but vapor release from microscopic defects remains difficult to detect because the amount of analyte released is small, transport to the detector is inefficient, and electrolyte vapors contain multiple interfering components. Here, we report a reduced-pressure ion mobility spectrometry (RP-IMS) method that uses reduced pressure as an active sampling strategy for proof-of-concept electrolyte microleak detection. A leakage control gate was used to reduce pressure-dependent variation

Electrolyte-Guided Selectivity Unlocks Pathway Control in Electrochemical Olefin Functionalization.

Organic electrosynthesis offers a direct, electricity-driven strategy for constructing complex molecular structures in a more sustainable and innovative manner. However, even with the precise redox control that electrochemistry affords, steering highly reactive intermediates along a single productive pathway remains a central challenge, particularly when multiple mechanistic manifolds are accessible. Herein, we demonstrate that the identity of the supporting electrolyte dictates the selectivity of electro-reductive olefin coupling, directing the transformation toward either exclusively linear

Solvation-Hierarchy Electrolyte for Balancing Kinetics and Stability in Sodium-Sulfur Batteries.

Room-temperature sodium-sulfur batteries hold immense promise for next-generation energy storage, while hindered by the dilemma of sodium polysulfide (NaPS) shuttling and redox kinetic. Here, we propose a solvation hierarchy strategy for sodium-sulfur batteries to reconcile the intrinsic trade-off between polysulfide confinement and reaction kinetics. The solvation hierarchy strategy includes the strong solvating, moderate solvating and weak solvating electrolyte, which establishes a tailored solvation environment that sterically excludes polysulfides to mitigate shuttling, while concurrently

Alterations of acid-base- and electrolyte status immediately following electroconvulsive therapy.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an established treatment for severe affective and psychotic disorders. However, there are only few studie … equiring either first or repeat ECT. Blood-gas analyses were performed to monitor concentrations of electrolytes and acid-base status among others. A repeated measures analysis of variance was applied to test for longitudinal changes of blood gas parameters. 47 ECT sessions were included in the final data analysis (19 patients, mean age 54.4 ± 12.7 years, 12 f …

Palliative Radiotherapy for Colorectal Villous Adenoma with Severe Diarrhea and Electrolyte Imbalance.

Colorectal large villous adenomas are sometimes associated with McKittrick-Wheelock syndrome, a condition characterized by severe diarrhea leading to dehydration, electrolyte depletion, and acute renal failure, which can be life-threatening in some cases. The efficacy of radiotherapy for colorectal villous adenoma has rarely been reported. We present a rare case of McKittrick-Wheelock syndrome in an older man caused by a large colorectal villous adenoma. This case is notable because palliative external beam radiotherapy of 30 Gy in 10 fractions not only reduced the tumor size but also resulted

Ionomeric binders in polymer electrolyte fuel cells: roles, challenges, and advances.

Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) represent a sustainable technology for converting chemical energy into electrical energy, playing a pivotal role in achieving carbon neutrality. At the core of PEFCs lie membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), wherein ionomers perform dual functions as both ion exchange membranes (IEMs) and catalyst layer (CL) binders. This review focuses on ionomers used as CL binders, an underexplored yet critical component that significantly influences PEFC performance and durability. We systematically examine the roles of ionomers in enabling multiphase mass transport w

Electrolyte and metabolite composition of cystic fluid from a rat model of ARPKD.

Fluid-filled cysts are the key feature of polycystic kidney disease, which eventually leads to renal failure. We analyzed the composition of cyst fluid from a rat model of autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, the PCK rat, and identified sexual differences. Our results demonstrate that the ion composition of cyst fluid differs from that of urine or plasma. Untargeted metabolomics combined with transcriptomic data identified tryptophan metabolism, enzyme metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and fatty acid metabolism as pathways differing between male and female PCK rats. We quanti

Water and electrolyte abnormalities in novel pharmacological agents for kidney disease and cancer.

This review article series on water and electrolyte disorders is based on the 'Electrolyte Winter Seminar' held annually for young nephrologists in Japan. This is the third article in this series that focuses on water and electrolyte disturbances caused by novel pharmacological agents for kidney disease and cancer. The advent of novel pharmacological agents in cardiorenal medicine and oncology has introduced both therapeutic benefits and challenges in managing medication-induced water and electrolyte disturbances. These medications, including sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors,

Provoked Seizure Triggered By Electrolyte Imbalance And Substance Use: A Case Report.

This case report explores the diagnostic challenges in evaluating first-time seizures by highlighting the importance of differentiating between provoked and unprovoked seizures. The patient, a 65-year-old female, experienced her first seizure during a yoga retreat in Costa Rica, influenced by a perfect storm of overlapping factors such as traveler's diarrhea, alcohol consumption, and THC use. Comprehensive evaluation and laboratory assessments revealed an elevated hematocrit and borderline magnesium deficiency. Despite limitations in reporting accuracy and the lack of immediate medical transfe

Electrokinetic and Electroconvective Effects in Ternary Electrolyte Near Ion-Selective Microsphere.

The paper presents theoretical and experimental investigations of the behavior of an electrolyte solution with three types of ions near an ion-selective microparticle with electrokinetically and pressure-driven flow. A special experimental cell has been developed for the investigations. An anion-selective spherical particle composed of ion-exchange resin is fixed in the center of the cell. An enriched region with a high salt concentration appears at the anode side of the particle when an electric field is turned on, according to the nonequilibrium electrosmosis behavior. A similar region exist

[Severe hypomagnesemia in a man with alcohol dependence: a forgotten electrolyte in a neglected population].

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of acute alcohol withdrawal like tremors, seizures and delirium are commonly treated with benzodiazepines and vitamins. When complaints are not reacting to this treatment, an alternative diagnosis must be considered. Although hypomagnesemia is present in at least 30 percent of the patients with alcohol dependence, it can provoke and maintain these complaints. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a 43-year-old man with alcohol dependence, who shows neurological, muscular, and cardiac consequences of an undiagnosed hypomagnesemia. CONCLUSION: In daily clinical practice there is no

Nitrilotriacetic Acid Improves Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation of Titanium for Biomedical Applications.

Dental implants have become a routine, affordable, and highly reliable technology to replace tooth loss. In this regard, titanium and its alloys are the metals of choice for the manufacture of dental implants because they are chemically inert and biocompatible. However, for special cohorts of patients, there is still a need for improvements, specifically to increase the ability of implants to integrate into the bone and gum tissues and to prevent bacterial infections that can subsequently lead to peri-implantitis and implant failures. Therefore, titanium implants require sophisticated approach
