Central conduction time of magnetic brain stimulation in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Twenty-seven children and adolescents aged 4 to 18 years, fulfilling the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV) criteria for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, were included in this study. The diagnosis was determined by a pediatric neurologist and a psychologist examined all 27 subjects with tests that included the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) and reading, writing, handedness, personality, and anxiety scores. Subjects with histories of epilepsy, head injury, drug abuse, or psychotic disorders were excluded. Culturally ba

The Impact of Pedagogical Agents on Second Language Acquisition Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis Guided by Social Agency Theory.

Digital Pedagogical Agents (DPAs) are virtual teaching entities created in the digital learning environment that have characteristics such as emotion and socialization. According to the basis of Social Agency Theory (SAT), a three-level random-effects meta-analytic model is employed in this paper to study the general effect and boundary conditions of DPAs in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) environments systematically. Through searches across seven Chinese and English databases, 31 independent empirical studies were identified, yielding 112 effect sizes (2002-2026). Based on the three-level r

Exploring the Cognitive and Behavioral Aspects of Shprintzen-Goldberg Syndrome; a Novel Cohort and Literature Review.

Shprintzen-Goldberg-syndrome (SGS) is caused by pathogenic exon 1 variants of SKI. Symptoms include dysmorphic features, skeletal and cardiovascular comorbidities, and cognitive and developmental impairments. We delineated the neurodevelopmental and behavioral features of SGS, as they are not well-documented. We collected physician-reported data of people with molecularly confirmed SGS through an international collaboration. We identified and deep-phenotyped the neurodevelopmental and behavioral features in four patients. Within our cohort, all exhibited developmental delays in motor skills an

A systematic review and meta-analysis of intellectual, neuropsychological, and psychoeducational functioning in neurofibromatosis type 1.

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is a common genetic disorder frequently associated with cognitive deficits. Despite cognitive deficits being a key feature of NF1, the profile of such impairments in NF1 has been shown to be heterogeneous. Thus, we sought to quantitatively synthesize the extant literature on cognitive functioning in NF1. A random-effects meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies was carried out comparing cognitive functioning of patients with NF1 to typically developing or unaffected sibling comparison subjects of all ages. Analyses included 50 articles (Total NNF1 = 1,522; MAge =

Unraveling Online Mental Health Through the Lens of Early Maladaptive Schemas: AI-Enabled Content Analysis of Online Mental Health Communities.

BACKGROUND: Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are pervasive, self-defeating patterns of thoughts and emotions underlying most mental health problems and are central in schema therapy. However, the characteristics of EMSs vary across demographics, and despite the growing use of online mental health communities (OMHCs), how EMSs manifest in these online support-seeking environments remains unclear. Understanding these characteristics could inform the design of more effective interventions powered by artificial intelligence to address online support seekers' unique therapeutic needs. OBJECTIVE: W

Alzheimer's disease is an inherent, natural part of human brain aging: an integrated perspective.

Alzheimer disease is one of the most challenging demons in our society due to its very high prevalence and its clinical manifestations which cause deterioration of cognition, intelligence, and emotions - the very capacities that distinguish Homo sapiens from other animal species. Besides the personal, social, and economical costs, late stages of AD are vivid experiences for the family, relatives, friends, and general observers of the progressive ruin of an individual who turns into a being with lower mental and physical capacities than less evolved species. A human brain with healthy cognition

Neurobiology of Self-Regulation: Longitudinal Influence of FKBP5 and Intimate Partner Violence on Emotional and Cognitive Development in Childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Self-regulation includes the volitional and nonvolitional regulation of emotional, cognitive, and physiological responses to stimulation. It develops from infancy through individual characteristics and the environment, with the stress hormone system as a central player. Accordingly, the authors hypothesized that genes involved in regulating the stress system, such as FK506 binding protein 5 (FKBP5), interact with early-life stress exposure, such as exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV), to predict self-regulation indicators and associated outcomes, including behavioral and lea

The mind behind the message: advancing theory-of-mind scales for typically developing children, and those with deafness, autism, or Asperger syndrome.

Children aged 3-12 years (n = 184) with typical development, deafness, autism, or Asperger syndrome took a series of theory-of-mind (ToM) tasks to confirm and extend previous developmental scaling evidence. A new sarcasm task, in the format of H. M. Wellman and D. Liu's (2004) 5-step ToM Scale, added a statistically reliable 6th step to the scale for all diagnostic groups. A key previous finding, divergence in task sequencing for children with autism, was confirmed. Comparisons among diagnostic groups, controlling age, and language ability, showed that typical developers mastered the 6 ToM ste

Anger and assaultiveness of male forensic patients with developmental disabilities: links to volatile parents.

This study with 107 male forensic patients with developmental disabilities investigated whether exposure to parental anger and aggression was related to anger and assaultiveness in a hospital, controlling for background variables. Patient anger and aggression were assessed by self-report, staff-ratings, and archival records. Exposure to parental anger/aggression, assessed by a clinical interview, was significantly related to patient self-reported anger, staff-rated anger and aggression, and physical assaults in hospital, controlling for age, intelligence quotient, length of hospital stay, viol

Effect of marijuana and placebo-marijuana smoking on psychological state and on psychophysiological cardiovascular functioning in anginal patients.

Ten male anginal patients with angiographically documented coronary artery disease, in a randomized double-blind crossover study, smoked one marijuana cigarette (containing 18 mg of delta-9-THC) on one morning and one placebo marijuana cigarette (containing 0.05 mg of delta-9-THC) on a successive morning. Significant increases occurred in average cognitive and intellectual impairment scores, derived from the objective content analysis of 5 min of speech, 30 mins after smoking the marijuana cigarette as compared to the placebo marijuana cigarette, and these scores decreased to near presmoking l

Atypical Asymmetry for Processing Human and Robot Faces in Autism Revealed by fNIRS.

Deficits in the visual processing of faces in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) individuals may be due to atypical brain organization and function. Studies assessing asymmetric brain function in ASD individuals have suggested that facial processing, which is known to be lateralized in neurotypical (NT) individuals, may be less lateralized in ASD. Here we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to first test this theory by comparing patterns of lateralized brain activity in homologous temporal-occipital facial processing regions during observation of faces in an ASD group and an NT grou

Behavior and psychological functioning of young children of HIV-positive mothers in South Africa.

Adults with HIV are living longer due to earlier diagnosis and increased access to antiretroviral medications. Therefore, fewer young children are being orphaned and instead, are being cared for by parents who know they are HIV positive, although they may be asymptomatic. Presently, it is unclear whether the psychological functioning of these young children is likely to be affected or, alternatively, whether it is only when a mother is ill, that children suffer adverse effects. We, thus, aimed to compare the behavior and psychological functioning of young children (aged 6-10 years) of HIV-posi

Ventral medial prefrontal functional connectivity and emotion regulation in chronic schizophrenia: a pilot study.

People with schizophrenia exhibit impaired social cognitive functions, particularly emotion regulation. Abnormal activations of the ventral medial prefrontal cortex (vMPFC) during emotional tasks have been demonstrated in schizophrenia, suggesting its important role in emotion processing in patients. We used the resting-state functional connectivity approach, setting a functionally relevant region, the vMPFC, as a seed region to examine the intrinsic functional interactions and communication between the vMPFC and other brain regions in schizophrenic patients. We found hypo-connectivity between

The contribution of experiential avoidance and social cognitions in the prediction of social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive models propose that social anxiety arises from specific dysfunctional cognitions about the likelihood and severity of embarrassment. Relational frame theory (RFT), on the other hand, posits that social anxiety arises from the unwillingness to endure unpleasant internal experiences (i.e. experiential avoidance [EA]). Although cognitive models have garnered empirical support, it may be that newer models such as RFT can improve our ability to predict and treat social anxiety. AIMS: We aimed to elucidate the relationship between dysfunctional cognitions and EA, as well as th

[Psychotherapy of chronic depression: contributions of CBASP by McCullough].

INTRODUCTION: Chronic depression is a frequent disorder and is usually treated using traditional approaches. These approaches rarely take into account the psychopathological specificities of the chronic evolution of the disorder. OBJECTIVE: The present article aims at presenting the specific psychopathological nature of chronic depression and puts forward a treatment model that is particularly adapted to these specificities. TREATMENT MODEL: The treatment model, Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP; according to McCullough) is based on two theoretical models: the deve

Behavior problems in children with tuberous sclerosis complex and parental stress.

Behavioral problems are common in children with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) and can be challenging to manage at home. Standardized measures were used to assess behavior in 99 pediatric patients with TSC and to evaluate parenting stress in their parents. About 40% of the pediatric patients presented clinically significant behavioral problems, most frequently involving symptoms of autism spectrum disorder, inattention, and hyperactivity. Higher seizure frequency, mixed seizure disorder, and low intellectual functioning placed the patient at significant risk for behavior problems. Almost 50%

Artificial intelligence for affective-domain development in healthcare professions education: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into health professions education through generative AI, chatbots, virtual patients, automated feedback, and AI-enhanced simulation. While most discussions focus on cognitive and technical learning, the role of AI in affective-domain development remains less clearly understood. Affective-domain learning is essential in healthcare education because it shapes communication, empathy, professionalism, reflection, self-awareness, and patient-centered practice. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review examined how AI-based educational too

Integrating Patient-Reported Outcomes into Atrial Fibrillation Care Pathways: Implementation Challenges, Health System Implications, and Future Directions.

Background/Objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF) imposes a substantial long-term clinical and healthcare system burden, recurrent hospitalizations, impaired quality of life, and increasing long-term healthcare costs. Although patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are increasingly used in AF research and clinical practice, their broader role in healthcare delivery, implementation, and system-level decision-making remains insufficiently defined. Existing assessment strategies frequently prioritize symptom burden while underrepresenting cognitive, emotional, social, and functional dimensions o

A Virtual Agent to Support Individuals Living With Physical and Mental Comorbidities: Co-Design and Acceptability Testing.

BACKGROUND: Individuals living with long-term physical health conditions frequently experience co-occurring mental health problems. This comorbidity has a significant impact on an individual's levels of emotional distress, health outcomes, and associated health care utilization. As health care services struggle to meet demand and care increasingly moves to the community, digital tools are being promoted to support patients to self-manage their health. One such technology is the autonomous virtual agent (chatbot, conversational agent), which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to process the user
