Demographic trends of motor neurone disease-associated mortality from 1999-2020 in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a neurodegenerative condition affecting motor neurons in spinal cord and brainstem, leading to a reduced life expectancy. This study describes demographic trends in MND-associated mortality in the United States over a 20-year period. METHODS: Data was extracted from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging OnLine Data for Epidemiologic Research underlying cause of death database. All death certificates from 1999-2020 with MND (G12.2) recorded as the cause of mortality were extracted. Annual MND-associated crude mortality rates (C

Association of childhood socioeconomic status and health with depressive symptoms in later life: a cross-sectional latent class analysis of the 2014/2015 Indonesia Family Life Survey.

OBJECTIVES: While childhood circumstances predict mental health outcomes in high-income countries, evidence from low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Indonesia remains scarce. This study examines the long-term association between childhood socioeconomic status (SES), health and depressive symptoms in adulthood, testing the hypothesis that early-life disadvantages increase the odds of depressive symptoms later in life. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis using latent class analysis to cluster childhood SES/health and logistic regression to assess associations with depressive sympto

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Refractory Asthma Exacerbations With Respiratory Failure.

BACKGROUND: Asthma exacerbations with respiratory failure (AERF) are associated with hospital mortality of 7% to 15%. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used as a salvage therapy for refractory AERF, but controlled studies showing its association with mortality have not been performed. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is treatment with ECMO associated with lower mortality in refractory AERF compared with standard care? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a retrospective, epidemiologic, observational cohort study using a national, administrative data set from 2010 to 2020 that includes 25% o

Diverse diagnostic profiles associated with prescription opioid use disorder in a nationwide sample: One crisis, multiple needs.

OBJECTIVE: The opioid crisis has had devastating effects on individuals and communities, and it has rapidly increased in severity. However, we still lack nationally representative information on the diversity of comorbidity patterns among prescription opioid use disorder (P-OUD), other substance use disorders (SUDs), and psychopathology using the newest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013). This impedes planning for multiple aspects of intervention, including society-wide allocation of treatment resources,

A complex systems approach to evaluate HIV prevention in metropolitan areas: preliminary implications for combination intervention strategies.

BACKGROUND: HIV transmission among injecting and non-injecting drug users (IDU, NIDU) is a significant public health problem. Continuing propagation in endemic settings and emerging regional outbreaks have indicated the need for comprehensive and coordinated HIV prevention. We describe the development of a conceptual framework and calibration of an agent-based model (ABM) to examine how combinations of interventions may reduce and potentially eliminate HIV transmission among drug-using populations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A multidisciplinary team of researchers from epidemiology, soci

Alcohol and injury severity: reappraisal of the continuing controversy.

It is well recognized that alcohol increases the risk of injury. It is controversial, however, whether alcohol also has an effect on the degree and outcome of injury after controlling for the severity of impact. This review examines the evidence from experimental studies in animals regarding the potentiating effects of alcohol on trauma, and the methodologic issues that may have contributed to the contradictory findings of clinical and epidemiologic studies. Most experimental studies indicate that alcohol can adversely affect the degree and outcome of injury. In controlled laboratory condition

Human exposure to mercury: a critical assessment of the evidence of adverse health effects.

The ubiquitous nature of mercury in the environment, its global atmospheric cycling, and its toxicity to humans at levels that are uncomfortably close to exposures experienced by a proportion of the population are some of the current concerns associated with this pollutant. The purpose of this review is to critically evaluate the scientific quality of published reports involving human exposures to mercury and associated health outcomes as an aid in the risk evaluation of this chemical. A comprehensive review of the scientific literature involving human exposures to mercury was performed and ea
