From 1915 to 1952, 31 hips in 28 patients with slipped capital femoral epiphysis were observed without interventional treatment at the University of Iowa Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. A slip was considered chronic if the symptoms had been present for 3 weeks or more. The severity of the slip was determined by radiographs. Assessment included Iowa Hip Rating and grading of radiographic degenerative changes. The mean duration of patient followup from the onset of symptoms was 41 years. The mean patient age was 54 years old at review, and 13 years old at onset of symptoms. Degenerative arthr

In an effort to predict which slipped capital femoral epiphysis fixation devices might cause fewer retrieval problems, 27 consecutive implant-retrieval procedures were reviewed, and mechanical tests using many currently available devices were performed. Problems occurred with both stainless steel and titanium devices if implanted for > 1 year. This tendency for increased problems was statistically significant for the titanium group, and analysis of a retrieved titanium screw showed evidence of osseointegration (direct bone-metal contact at > 90% of the interface) using backscattered image scan

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is an uncommon skeletal disorder of adolescence often overlooked because of its nonspecific clinical presentation. Anteroposterior radiography may fail to demonstrate a minimal slip even when clinical examination raises suspicion of the disease. On the other hand, prompt diagnosis is essential to obtain better therapeutic results. In our patient population joint effusion, which often accompanies SCFE, was readily recognized and quantified by ultrasonography (US). US also permitted recognition of the initial SCFE and assessment of the degree of slip by m

A prospective clinical and laboratory study was performed in thirty-four patients (twenty-two blacks, ten Puerto Ricans, and two whites) who had slipped capital femoral epiphysis in fifty-two hips. Although the majority of the laboratory studies were normal, all patients showed significant elevations of the serum immunoglobulins and C3 component of complement, with the highest values recorded for IgA. Urinary glycosaminoglycans were elevated in the few patients studied and increased proportionally with the duration of the disease. Nine (25 per cent) of the thirty-four patients had chondrolysis

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis is thought to result in cam deformity and femoroacetabular impingement. We examined: (1) cam-type deformity, (2) labral degeneration, chondrolabral damage, and osteoarthritic development, and (3) the clinical and patient-reported outcome after fixation of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE).
METHODS: We identified 28 patients who were treated with fixation of SCFE from 1991 to 1998. 17 patients with 24 affected hips were willing to participate and were evaluated 10-17 years postoperatively. Median age at surgery was 12 (10-14) yea

The use of reference genes is required for relative quantification in gene expression analysis and the stability of these genes can be variable depending on the experimental design. Therefore, it is indispensable to test the reliability of endogenous genes previously to their use. This study evaluated nine candidate reference genes to select the most stable genes to be used as reference in gene expression studies with the femoral cartilage of normal and epiphysiolysis-affected broilers. The femur articular cartilage of 29 male broilers with 35 days of age was collected, frozen and further subm

BACKGROUND: This study assesses the effect of skeletal maturity on the development of iatrogenic proximal femoral deformity following threaded prophylactic screw fixation in patients presenting with unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE).
METHODS: Children who underwent threaded screw prophylaxis of the uninvolved hip (Group P) and those who were observed with no prophylaxis (Group N) on presentation with unilateral SCFE were compared. Skeletal maturity was assessed with the Modified Oxford Score (MOS). Proximal femoral morphology was characterized by femoral neck length, femoral

BACKGROUND: The modified Dunn procedure (open subcapital realignment via a surgical dislocation approach) has been shown to be a safe and effective way of treating acute, unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). There is a paucity of literature comparing the modified Dunn procedure in stable SCFE. The purpose of this study was to compare acute, unstable versus chronic, stable SCFE managed with the modified Dunn procedure.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on 44 skeletally immature patients who underwent the modified Dunn procedure for SCFE. Patients were divided in

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of moderate to severe slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is controversial. Over the last years, 3 institutions in Argentina adopted the modified Dunn procedure for capital realignment in selected cases of SCFE. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome and the rate of complications of patients who had undergone surgical hip dislocation and capital realignment.
METHODS: A multicenter retrospective cohort study of patients who received the modified Dunn procedure from January 2009 to 2013 was performed. Data concerning clinical features, surgical t

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) remains controversial. In Sweden, the standard treatment is unthreaded fixation over the physis, with the purpose to permit continued growth of the femoral neck. The aim of the present study was to verify and quantify longitudinal growth of the femoral neck after in situ pinning with the Hansson hook-pin.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 54 patients treated with the Hansson hook-pin for SCFE between 2001 and 2009. The immediate postoperative radiograph and the radiograph after physeal closure (mean in

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous in situ single screw fixation is the preferred treatment for stable and unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). The recommended screw placement is in the center of the epiphysis and perpendicular to the physis, which necessitates an anterior starting point for most SCFEs. A recent clinical study has shown good clinical results with a laterally based screw for SCFE, which is oblique to the physis. We sought to biomechanically compare these 2 techniques for load to failure and hypothesized that the laterally based oblique screw is equivalent or superior to an

PURPOSE: Stable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) has been shown to have a lower rate of avascular necrosis than unstable SCFE. A recent study found increased intracapsular hip pressures in the setting of unstable SCFE, thus increasing the risk of osteonecrosis. The purpose of this study was to measure the intracapsular pressure in stable SCFE and compare it to the intracapsular pressure in normal hips and in unstable SCFE.
METHODS: Thirteen hips with stable SCFE and 15 hips with unstable SCFE were identified. Using a side-bored needle, intracapsular hip pressures were measured at the

BACKGROUND: Here, we present 2 cases of the unusual sequelae of a venomous bite to the finger in children resulting in chondrolysis and physeal loss. There have been few isolated case reports documenting this phenomenon. Currently, there is no preventative treatment, and patients should be warned of this possible complication of envenomation.
METHODS: Two patients with chondrolysis and physeal loss have been seen in our practice.
RESULTS: Chondrolysis and epiphysiolysis occurred in 2 patients. One patient was treated with proximal interphalangeal joint fusion and one is being managed conserv

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), causing posterior and inferior displacement and retroversion of the femoral head, is a well-recognized etiology for femoroacetabular impingement and can lead to premature arthritis in the young adult. The treatment of malunited SCFE remains controversial. Surgical dislocation and subcapital correction osteotomy (SCO) has been described as a powerful method to correct the proximal femoral deformity.
METHODS: Between January 2003 and January 2010, 11 patients (12 hips) with closed femoral physes and symptomatic femoroacetabular impingement f
