Clinical risk stratification of stroke caregiver distress: an interpretable nonlinear model of caregiving-load categories.

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers of stroke survivors frequently experience psychological distress. Social support and active coping may be protective, but their associations can vary across levels of caregiving load. Interpretable machine learning may help characterize such nonlinear patterns without assuming a constant linear association. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study included 506 family caregivers. High psychological distress was defined as a Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) total score ≥15. We trained a machine-learning model using extreme gradient boosting (XGBo

Semi-Supervised Learning for Automatic Atrial Fibrillation Detection in 24-Hour Holter Monitoring.

Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) is generally diagnosed by long-term dynamic electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring. Identifying AF episodes from long-term ECG data can place a heavy burden on clinicians. Many machine-learning-based automatic AF detection methods have been proposed to solve this issue. However, these methods require numerous annotated data to train the model, and the annotation of AF in long-term ECG is extremely time-consuming. Reducing the demand for labeled data can effectively improve the clinical practicability of automatic AF detection methods. In this study, we developed

Machine Learning Meets Spin-Orbit Coupling: Reconstruction of Spin-Orbit-Mixed Potential Energy Curves in MgCa.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) induces state mixing and distortions in potential energy curves (PECs), complicating their construction and interpretation for diatomic molecules. We introduce a fully automated machine-learning framework for reconstructing physically consistent SOC-resolved PECs across independent electronic-structure calculations with different basis-set representations. The approach combines generative data augmentation using a conditional Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Network with gradient penalty (cWGAN-GP) with supervised regression models (Ridge Regression, Gradient Boosti

Exploring oceanic depths: unveiling hidden treasures with IoT and ensembled deep hybrid learning model.

The fast evolution of underwater and underground Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructures has generated an urgent urgency to have precise, power-efficient, and real-time object detection systems that can be functioning within the extreme seawater conditions. The current solutions are characterized by noise, poor feature discrimination, and high cost of computation. Inspired by recent developments in the machine learning-driven localization, trustworthy routing in underwater wireless sensor networks, and contemporary sonar-based estimation methods, the presented work proposes a new Ensembled De

Interpretable machine learning for 28-day all-cause in-hospital mortality prediction in critically ill patients with heart failure combined with hypertension: A retrospective cohort study based on medical information mart for intensive care database-IV and eICU databases.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) combined with hypertension is an extremely important cause of in-hospital mortality, especially for the intensive care unit (ICU) patients. However, under intense working pressure, the medical staff are easily overwhelmed by the large number of clinical signals generated in the ICU, which may lead to treatment delay, sub-optimal care, or even wrong clinical decisions. Individual risk stratification is an essential strategy for managing ICU patients with HF combined with hypertension. Artificial intelligence, especially machine learning (ML), can develop superior

Development and Temporal External Validation of a Parsimonious, Interpretable Machine Learning Model for Predicting 6-Month Mortality in Long-Term Care Facilities: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Early mortality after long-term care facility (LTCF) admission is common; yet, prognostic tools are often derived from Western minimum dataset-based cohorts or require hospital electronic health record linkages that are unavailable at intake in many LTCFs. There is also limited evidence on explainable, admission-feasible machine learning-based prognostication in Asian LTCF settings. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to develop and temporally externally validate an interpretable machine learning model for predicting 6-month all-cause mortality among older adults newly admitted to

Limits of Machine Learning for Predicting Stillbirth at Term: A Population-Based Cohort of 302,192 Pregnancies in Northern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth at term is a major public-health concern. In high-income settings, the most commonly identifiable causes are unrecognised fetal growth restriction (about 14%) and placental abruption (about 12%), but 20 to 40% of term stillbirths remain unexplained. Whether modern machine learning can substantively improve prediction over established clinical risk-factor models is unresolved. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the predictive performance of three machine-learning models, elastic-net logistic regression, random forest, and extreme gradient boosting, for stillbirth at term in a popula

Ambient air temperature and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: A national case-crossover study.

INTRODUCTION: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a major health concern. Roughly 300,000 cases occur annually in Europe; overall survival is 11%. Given the disease burden and increasingly extreme temperatures due to climate change, we investigated the association between air temperature and risk of OHCA in Sweden. METHODS: This study employed a time-stratified case-crossover design to examine the relationship between daily mean air temperature and OHCA cases from the Swedish Registry for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation between 2010 and 2019. Using a machine learning model, mean temperatur

At-home wearable-based monitoring predicts clinical measures and biological biomarkers of disease severity in Friedreich's Ataxia.

BACKGROUND: Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) results in progressive impairment in gait, upper extremity coordination, and speech. Currently, these symptoms are assessed through expert examination at clinical visits. Such in-clinic assessments are time-consuming, subjective, of limited sensitivity, and provide only a limited perspective of the daily disability of patients. METHODS: In this study, we recruited 39 FRDA patients and remotely monitored their physical activity and upper extremity function using a set of wearable sensors for 7 consecutive days. We compared the sensor-derived metrics of lowe
