Despite pain being a sensory experience, studies of spinal cord ventral root damage have demonstrated that motor neuron injury can induce neuropathic pain. Whether injury of cranial motor nerves can also produce nociceptive hypersensitivity has not been addressed. Herein, we demonstrate that chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the buccal branch of the facial nerve results in long-lasting, unilateral allodynia in the rat. An anterograde and retrograde tracer (3000MW tetramethylrhodamine-conjugated dextran) was not transported to the trigeminal ganglion when applied to the injury site, but was

The authors describe a case of a shotgun blast injury to the face in which early definitive repair of both facial soft tissues and facial reanimation was accomplished in one stage using a free flap. The trauma occurred 2 days before presentation via a hunting rifle fired at a short range. On examination, a 8 x 5-cm cheek defect was evident, involving the full thickness of the perioral facial mimetic muscles as well. A free latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap was transferred to the defect, with the thoracodorsal nerve coapted to an ipsilateral, severed buccal branch of the facial nerve. Post

OBJECTIVE: To determine the roles of axoplasmic transportation during regeneration after facial nerve injury.
METHOD: Facial nucleus injection and isotopic-label tracer with liquid scintillation counting techniques were used to investigate the changes of radioactivity after guinea pig facial nerve compressed.
RESULT: Axoplasmic transportation was observed again at 3 d after facial nerve injury, and the function recovered until 14 d. At 21 d after injury, it showed that transportation curve of radiolabeled protein was similar with that of the normal. There was particular curve in slow axoplas

BACKGROUND: Trauma involving the facial bones has been shown to be associated with high severity in previous studies. Characteristics of facial fractures in adults have been well described in the adult population, less so in the pediatric literature. Our investigation aims to define these epidemiological measures and risk factors for poor outcomes using the most recent data.
METHODS: The 2016 Trauma Quality Improvement Program data bank was examined to study facial fracture pattern, mechanism of injury, and demographic descriptive data to characterize pediatric trauma patients. Multivariable

Bell's palsy is the most common diagnosis associated with facial nerve weakness or paralysis. However, not all patients with facial paresis/paralysis have Bell's palsy. Other common causes include treatment of vestibular schwannoma, head and neck tumours, iatrogenic injuries, Herpes zoster, or trauma. The approach to each of these conditions varies widely. The purpose of this guideline is to provide clinicians with guidance on the treatment and monitoring of patients with different causes of facial paralysis. We intend to draft a practical guideline, focusing on operationalised recommendations

Fractures of the orbitozygomatic complex are one of the most common facial fractures encountered by plastic surgeons. Many would consider this to be primarily a cosmetic deformity; however, these injuries can be associated with acute life-threatening complications. Intracranial pseudoaneurysm, although rare, is a well-documented complication of blunt facial trauma, which most plastic surgeons are unaware of. We present the case of a 20-year-old woman who developed an intracranial pseudoaneurysm after blunt facial trauma to illustrate the importance of (1) understanding this rare but highly mor

Recent advances in high resolution CT imaging have provided marked improvement in bone imaging. Complex facial fractures, especially those associated with craniocerebral or spinal injuries, are better and more safely assessed by CT. Degrees of comminution, previously grossly underestimated by conventional radiography, are more accurately assessed by CT. The transaxial axis remains the dominant modality and superbly demonstrates displacements. Complications to soft tissue structures (orbit, brain) are diagnosed at the time of study and provide information often not obtainable by other modalitie

In the extraoral approach for mandibular fractures, facial scars and facial nerve injury are common complications. Herein, we introduce an improved surgical technique to reduce fragments of infected comminuted mandibular fractures with the assistance of computer software. Firstly, the model was reset by 3-dimensional (3D) printing, and then the titanium plate was reconstructed on the model. Finally, open reduction and internal fixation through intraoral approach. This method can effectively control infection, reduce facial scars and avoid the risk of facial nerve injury.

The clinical records of 53 patients who had head injury and facial trauma were reviewed and analyzed to ascertain what affect head injury had on the repair of facial fractures. The study was designed to establish the incidence of complications and to discover what factors contributed to untoward sequela in such patients. It was found that the neurologically injured patient developed postoperative facial fracture complications, particularly in the mandible, more frequently than those facial trauma patients who were not neurologically compromised.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated whether concomitant facial bone (FB) fractures reduce temporal bone (TB) injuries, such as posttraumatic facial palsy and vertigo, through an impact absorbing effect, so-called "cushion effect," in severe trauma patients.
METHODS: A total of 134 patients with a TB fracture were included. They were divided into two groups according to their concomitant facial fractures: group I (no FB fracture) and group II (FB fracture). We compared clinical characteristics, such as brain injury, trauma severity, and complications of TB fracture, between the two groups.

Included in this study are all patients with trauma to the parotid region seen at our center from 1979 to 1989. There was a total of five patients with injury to the parotid area: two patients with isolated facial nerve injury; one with isolated parotid duct injury; two with combined duct and nerve injury. There were four males and one female, with a mean age of 34 years (range, 16 to 62 years). The three patients with parotid duct injury required other procedures for associated trauma. A total of eight nerve branches were severed in four patients. Seven of the eight nerve branches (82.5%) wer

Facial paralysis caused by injury to the facial nerve is common clinical presentation resulting in significant physical and psychological damage. In addition, due to the lack of understanding about the mechanisms of injury and repair and the lack of effective treatment targets, the clinical treatment outcomes for such patients remain poor. Schwann cells (SCs) have a central role in the regeneration of nerve myelin. In a rat model of facial nerves crush injury, we found that branched-chain aminotransferase 1 (BCAT1) was upregulated after injury. Moreover, it had a positive role in nerve repair.

Pediatric trauma surgeons frequently encounter severe injuries from animal bites, with dog bites being especially prevalent in children, often leading to facial injuries. This paper details the case of a six-year-old male who suffered a dog bite resulting in a rare proximal right brachial artery injury. The bite caused deep lacerations and avulsion injuries, prompting admission to the trauma center, where nonpalpable right radial and ulnar pulses and arm weakness were observed. Surgical intervention, including wound exploration and brachial artery repair using a saphenous vein graft, successfu…

Ossicular chain disruption is a typical consequence of temporal bone trauma. However, it can also occur as a result of direct trauma to the ossicular chain due to penetrating injuries. Hearing loss, dizziness, and facial nerve damage could also occur after penetrating middle ear injuries. Multiple ossicular chain disruption is a rare traumatic ossicular complication caused by direct penetrating lesions in the external auditory canal. We present two cases of multiple ossicular disruptions (dislocation of the incudostapedial and malleoincudal joints) after ear-pick injuries, both of which result

Panfacial trauma refers to injuries caused by high-energy mechanisms to two or more regions of the craniofacial skeleton, including the frontal bone, the midface, and the occlusal unit. As with any trauma, Advanced Trauma Life Support protocols should be followed in unstable patients. For the patient with panfacial traumatic injury, advanced perioperative care or critical care is frequently required. This article describes surgical critical care for panfacial injuries, a component of the acute-care surgery model, to reduce systemic risks, improve the patient's condition, and enable a successfu…

An apparatus to determine normal, traumatic and ontogenic facial asymmetry was developed which scans the mid-face profile three dimensionally, according to the raster principle. Nine horizontal profile lines for the metric and optic comparison of both sides are produced over a computer. The results of the measurements were presented for normal subjects and patients following trauma to the mide-face (total, 100).

BACKGROUND: Chronic facial pain has varying causes and etiologies. Often, diagnosis and management require a combination of pharmacological and surgical interventions. Externally powered peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is an emerging treatment for refractory facial pain. This report describes a case of combined auriculotemporal nerve stimulation (ATNS) and sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation (SPGS) for a patient with complex facial pain.
CASE REPORT: A 74-year-old man with a decade-long history of intractable facial pain, following traumatic injuries, underwent a temporary PNS trial of com

INTRODUCTION: Gunshot wounds to the head (GSWH) account for the majority of penetrating brain injuries, and are the most lethal. Since they are rare in Europe, the number of neurosurgeons who have experienced this type of traumatic injury is decreasing, and fewer cases are reported in the literature.
CASE: We describe a case of gunshot to the temporal bone in which the bullet penetrated the skull resulting in the facial nerve paralysis. It was excised with the transotic approach. Microsurgical anastomosis among the masseteric nerve and the facial nerve was performed.
CONCLUSION: GSWH are oft

Orbital fractures are frequently associated with ophthalmological injuries, which range from minor irritation to vision-threatening trauma. This study was intended to identify predictive factors for ophthalmological injuries in patients with isolated orbital fractures, and to assess whether conventional assessment of facial trauma can reliably determine the need for specialist ophthalmological assessment. This prospective cohort study included adult patients with isolated orbital floor and/or medial wall fractures, who underwent standardised ophthalmological evaluation by an ophthalmologist. T
