The recently described burrow-dwelling Proechimys yonenagae from the Brazilian semiarid caatinga was compared to P. iheringi from the Brazilian rain forest of Mata Atlântica in terms of interactions between body temperature (Tb), ventilation (VE) and oxygen consumption (V(O2)) during hypercapnia (5 or 10% CO2). Wistar rats were also used as a control. VE was measured by plethysmography, Tb by inserting a probe into the colon, and V(O2) by a close-flow system. During air breathing, VE did not differ between the rodents, Wistar Tb was elevated compared to P. yonenagae, and the V(O2) values of P.

The mutual relation and prognostic value of three quantitative variables were investigated in a retrospective series of 56 stage I cutaneous malignant melanomas. Unbiased stereological estimates of nuclear volume, nuclear nu v were obtained along with measurements of melanoma thickness. The DNA index (DI) was determined by flow cytometry in adjacent sections from the same paraffin-embedded specimens. Isomorphous crystals of Mn(V)(O) and Cr(V)(O) corrolazines were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Reactivity studies with H atom donors and separated PCET reagents show a dramatic difference in H atom abstracting abilities for these two complexes. The implied large difference in driving force is opposite the trend in redox potentials, indicating that basicity is a key factor in determining the striking difference in reactivity for two metal-oxo species in identical ligand environments.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a risk factor for neurodegeneration, however little is known about how this kind of injury alters neuron subtypes. In this study, we follow neuronal populations over time after a single mild TBI (mTBI) to assess long ranging consequences of injury at the level of single, transcriptionally defined neuronal classes. Inherited resistance to activated protein C (APC) was recently discovered as a cause of familial thrombophilia and is now known to be the most common genetic risk factor for venous thrombosis. Chronic cardiac dysfunction was produced in rats by means of 1) aorto-caval fistula (A-V fistula), 2) coronary ligation, or 3) coronary embolization. Eleven to twelve weeks later, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was evaluated by ventriculography and compared with normal controls. Factor VLeiden (FVL) and antithrombin (AT) deficiency are both known genetic risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE). The combination is rare and leads to significantly increased risk for VTE. The rate of stroke in young women has been falling for some years. The data presented here suggest that the relative risk associated with oral contraceptive use also is falling.
