Parents' perception of health care services for girls with Rett syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome (RTT) is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder, implying impairment and disability across several domains. METHOD: We investigated parents' perception of the caregiving process in a sample of 55 mothers and fathers of girls with RTT using the MPOC-20 questionnaire. The association of parents' satisfaction with clinical variables has also been explored. RESULTS: We obtained intermediate levels of satisfaction on the MPOC-20 Coordinated and Comprehensive Care and Respectful and Supportive Care scales. The performance was lower on the scales Providing General Informatio

Maternal anxiety in the pre- and postnatal period: a literature review.

This study intended to present a systematic review to analyze the empirical studies published between 1998 and 2003 about maternal anxiety in the prenatal and postnatal periods, focusing on pre-term and term births. Nineteen studies were found; six of which evaluated maternal anxiety in the prenatal period, 12 studies evaluated anxiety in mothers in the postnatal period and only one study evaluated maternal anxiety in both periods. The results showed that high levels of maternal anxiety in the prenatal phase were associated with obstetric problems, emotional damages to fetal development, behav

Risk factors for paternal physical child abuse.

OBJECTIVE: This study uses the developmental-ecological framework to examine a comprehensive set of paternal factors hypothesized to be linked to risk for paternal child abuse (PCA) among a diverse sample of fathers. Attention was given to fathers' marital status and their race/ethnicity (White, African American, and Hispanic). METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 1257 married or cohabiting biological fathers who participated in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study. PCA was assessed when the index children were 3 years old. Analyses included a comprehensive set of self-reported p

Gamma globulin levels predict type 2 diabetes in the Pima Indian population.

It has been proposed that inflammation or infection may contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. We examined whether serum gamma globulin, a nonspecific measure of the humoral immune system, predicted changes in glucose tolerance in 2,530 members of the Pima Indian population, a group with a marked predisposition to type 2 diabetes. Cross-sectionally, gamma globulin was positively related to age (r = 0.08, P < 0.0005), BMI (r = 0.09; P < 0.0001), and female sex (P < 0.0001). Gamma globulin concentrations were familial, being positively correlated among siblings (r = 0.23; P < 0.0001)

Parental body mass index and offspring childhood body size and eating behaviour: A structural equation modelling analysis in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The intergenerational transmission of obesity-related traits could propagate an accelerating cycle of obesity, if parental adiposity causally influences offspring adiposity. The extent to which intergenerational obesity associations are due to such causal effects, as opposed to genetic confounding (inheritance), is unclear. We aimed to establish whether associations between parental peri-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and offspring birth weight (BW), BMI until 8 years of age, and 8-year-old eating behaviour are due to genetic confounding. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Data were from the

Gulf War veterans and hemifacial microsomia.

BACKGROUND: Concerns have been raised that more infants with Goldenhar syndrome were born to U.S. Gulf War veterans than expected. Goldenhar syndrome is considered a variant of the malformation hemifacial microsomia (HFM). We used data collected from a case-control study of HFM to estimate risk in relation to parental military service and, in particular, Gulf War service. METHODS: Cases with HFM who were three years old or younger were identified at craniofacial clinics in 24 U.S. cities and matched to controls by age and pediatrician. The mothers of 232 cases and 832 controls were interviewe

Investigating the impact of early adversity on perceived support from parents and friends in preadolescence: Do genetic predispositions and timing of exposure matter?

BACKGROUND: Perceived social support contributes to youth resilience, but perceptions of support differ substantially between youth. Genetic predispositions and early life adversity are potential sources for this variation, but research has yet to test gene-environment interplay comprehensively. We examined how early adversity and genetic predispositions for educational attainment, internalizing, and externalizing behaviours uniquely and jointly predict parents and friends support at age 11 and explored associations for different timing of adversity. METHODS: Participants were drawn from TRAI

Family coalitions and restrictive eating disorders in adolescence: a lausanne trilogue play study.

BACKGROUND: Coparenting, defined as the ability of mothers and fathers to coordinate and provide mutual support in parenting, plays a key role in children's social, emotional, and behavioral adjustment. While previous research has highlighted its influence on internalizing and externalizing problems, comparatively less is known about how children contribute to and respond to coparenting at a relational level. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates coparenting behaviors in families of adolescents with restrictive eating disorders and examines their association with the patients' interactive styles

Rumination in bereaved parents: Psychometric evaluation of the Swedish version of the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS).

BACKGROUND: Bereaved parents may be at higher risk to develop persistent, severe and disabling grief, termed prolonged grief. Grief rumination, repetitive thinking about the causes and consequences of the loss, is a malleable cognitive process that maintains prolonged grief. Grief rumination can be measured with the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS). The present study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the new Swedish version of the UGRS in a sample of bereaved parents. METHODS: A Swedish nationwide postal survey including measures of demographic and loss-related variables, g

The relationship between adult health and childhood maltreatment, as moderated by anger and ethnic background.

Childhood maltreatment, anger, and racial/ethnic background were examined in relation to physical health, psychological well-being, and blood pressure outcomes. This study used data from a diverse sample of African American, Latino, and Caucasian participants (N=198). Results from a series of multiple regressions indicated anger and total childhood maltreatment were robust predictors of poorer health. Although correlational analyses found maltreatment from the mother and father were associated with poorer health outcomes, when considered as part of the regression models, only a relationship be

Working with the parents and families of children with developmental language disorders: An international perspective.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between parental input and child language development has had a complex history. It has become clear that indirect parent training for the parents of children with delayed language development is an important feature of interventions offered by speech and language therapists in the anglophone countries. Yet we know less about how this type of approach is realised in other countries. METHODS: In this paper we report the results of a survey of practice undertaken as part of the work of COST Action IS1406, a European Union (EU) funded research network. The focus of t

Estimating direct and indirect genetic effects on emerging variation in depressive symptoms in early adolescence: a trio polygenic score analysis in the MoBa cohort : Author list.

Early adolescence is a common period of onset for depressive symptoms. In part, this may reflect a developmental expression of individuals' genetic propensities as they undergo physiological and hormonal changes and interact with new environments. Many commonly proposed mechanisms assume direct effects of an individual's own genes on emerging variation in their depressive symptomatology. However, estimates of genetic influence based on analyses in unrelated individuals capture not only direct genetic effects but also genetic effects from parents and other biologically related family members. Associations of polygenic risk scores for major depression and depression severity: an investigation of 105 623 individuals with 16 years follow-up.

Genetic risk could be informative for identifying individuals at risk of depression with severe outcomes. With the novel approach of combined health care registries and self-report measures related to depression, the authors aimed to identify the impact of polygenic risk scores (PRS) for major depression on self report measures and a diagnosis of depression across diagnostic thresholds. The study sample comprised participants from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study with linked information of depression diagnoses during 2006-2022 from health registries. Linear and logistic mode

Intergenerational effect of weight gain in childhood on offspring birthweight.

BACKGROUND: Some studies suggest that weight gain in childhood may increase the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood, and recent studies have noticed that the timing of weight gain may be related to its long-term consequence. However, weight gain in childhood has clear short-term benefits, and the literature on the pro and cons of weight gain in childhood is limited. METHODS: In 1982, all 5914 hospital births (over 99% of all deliveries) occurring in Pelotas, Southern Brazil, were identified and studied prospectively on several occasions. In 2004-05, we attempted to trace the whole cohort an

Exploring Genetic Clues in Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease: A Three-Generation Study.

BACKGROUND: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare disorder involving necrotizing lymphadenitis which was first described in Japan. The presentations include lymphadenopathy, fever, and leukopenia of unknown cause. PATIENT: A 2-year-old Malay girl was evaluated and diagnosed with KFD after presenting with prolonged fever and rash. Her parents are not biologically related, but there is a strong family history of KFD on the maternal side of the family. We investigated the genetic profiles of the patient, her mother and grandmother, who also had a history of similar presentations. METHODS: Hi
