Mating with immunised male mice affects the phenotype of adult progeny.

The life-history theory suggests that parental experience of the environment is passed to offspring, which allows them to adapt to prevailing conditions. This idea is supported from the mother's side, but to a much less extent from the father's side. Here, we investigated the effect of immunising fathers on pre- and neonatal development and on immune and neuroendocrine phenotypes of their offspring in C57BL/6J mice. Nine days before mating, fathers were intraperitoneally injected with the immunogenic protein keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH). Females mated with immunised males had less pre-weani…

Risk factors for paternal physical child abuse.

OBJECTIVE: This study uses the developmental-ecological framework to examine a comprehensive set of paternal factors hypothesized to be linked to risk for paternal child abuse (PCA) among a diverse sample of fathers. Attention was given to fathers' marital status and their race/ethnicity (White, African American, and Hispanic). METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 1257 married or cohabiting biological fathers who participated in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study. PCA was assessed when the index children were 3 years old. Analyses included a comprehensive set of self-reported p…

Associations of Fatherhood and Race With Cardiovascular Health Among Men: Findings From the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study, 1985‒2022, United States.

Objectives. To estimate associations of fatherhood with cardiovascular health (CVH), incident cardiovascular disease (CVD), and all-cause mo … tion between age at fatherhood onset and race on CVH (P < .05) in adjusted models. Among Black men, fathers had lower death rates than nonfathers (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.5; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.3, 0.9). Black fathers who were younger than 25 years (HR = 4.2; 95% CI = 1.2, 14.6) and those aged 25 to 29 years (HR = 4.2; 95% CI = 1.2, 14.8) at fat …

De novo c.2455C>T mutation of NPR2 gene in a fetus with shortened long bones and a ventricular septal defect conceived by a mother with a fragile site at 16q22.1 and a father with a rare heterochromatic variant of chromosome 4 from Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: A heterozygous natriuretic peptide receptor 2 (NPR2) gene c.2455C>T mutation was identified as a cause of familial idiopathic short stature (ISS). Only two cases with this mutation were reported previously, and the probands with ISS had no organ system defects. METHODS: Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed on an amniotic fluid DNA sample of a fetus with shortened long bones and a small ventricular septal defect detected by an obstetric ultrasound examination. The pathogenic variant of the fetus was confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Sanger sequencing, G-banded, and C-banded

Gender-Sensitive Screening for Paternal Mental Health: Psychometric properties of the Perinatal Assessment of Paternal Affectivity (PAPA) for the postnatal period.

Despite growing recognition of fathers' involvement in caregiving, paternal mental health during the perinatal period remains insufficiently explored. Recent evidence indicates that fathers may experience perinatal affective symptoms through externalizing behaviors, somatization, and addictive tendencies, which can negatively affect father-infant interactions and partner relationships. This study aims to validate the Perinatal Assessment of Paternal Affectivity (PAPA), previously validated in the prenatal period, in a sample of Italian fathers postnatally. Data from 221 fathers (mean age = 36.…

A systematic review of human paternal oxytocin: Insights into the methodology and what we know so far.

With the consolidation of fathers' engagement in caregiving, understanding the neuroendocrine and hormonal mechanisms underlying fatherhood becomes a relevant topic. Oxytocin (OT) has been linked with maternal bonding and caregiving, but less is known about the role of OT in human fatherhood and paternal caregiving. A systematic review of methods and findings of previous OT research in human fathers was carried. The literature search on PubMed and Scopus yielded 133 records. Twenty-four studies were included and analyzed. Significant variability emerged in OT methodology, including laboratory …

Having children with multiple partners is associated with reduced risk of malignant melanoma: an observation seeking a plausible explanation.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between the number of partners that mothers and fathers have children with and occurrence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM). METHODS: We conducted a complete registry-based follow-up of all Danish mothers born after 1935 from the birth of their second child until CMM, death, emigration, or end of study in 2002. We conducted a similar follow-up of the corresponding fathers. Incidence rate ratios (IRR) and confidence intervals (CI) were estimated by Poisson regression. RESULTS: THIS STUDY CORROBORATES THAT WOMEN HAVING CHILDREN WITH THREE OR MORE MEN …

Public health initiative at a young offenders institute.

One in four of prisoners aged 17 to 21 are fathers, often with limited experience of positive parenting themselves. The men in Aylesbury Young Offenders Institute were found to have pride in fatherhood and during parenting classes expressed a desire to become actively involved in the care of their children. They stated that they felt they needed to learn parenting skills with their partner and family rather than in isolation from them. Health visitors were involved with parenting classes in the prison education block and helped the fathers develop joint parenting skills through a family orient…

The family relations of female juvenile delinquents.

This study evaluated the assumption that the family relations of female delinquents are more dysfunctional than those of male delinquents. In a 2 X 2 (gender by delinquency status) design, 32 intact families were matched on demographic variables, and the male and female delinquents were matched on arrest data. Mothers, fathers, and adolescents were administered a self-report personality inventory and were observed during a family interaction task. Consistent with the extant literature, families of delinquents had low rates of facilitative information exchange and delinquent adolescents were mo…

Gender differences in empathy in parents at high- and low-risk of child physical abuse.

OBJECTIVES: The present research was designed to study empathy in high-risk parents for child physical abuse. The main objective was to study if high-risk mothers and fathers, compared to low-risk mothers and fathers, presented more Personal distress, less Perspective-taking, less Empathic concern and a deficit in dispositional empathy toward their partner and children. METHOD: Based on their scores on the Abuse Scale of the CAP Inventory [J.S. Milner, The Child Abuse Potential Inventory: Manual, 2nd ed., Psytec Corporation, Webster, NC], 19 (9 fathers and 10 mothers) high- and 26 (12 fathers…

[The actual image of male patients with paranoid schizophrenia in perception of the patients themselves and their parents].

AIM: The aim of this study was to answer following questions: Does the self-image of male schizophrenics differ from the image their parents have? Do parents judge their sons more negatively or more positively than they themselves do? Are opinions of the mothers and fathers different or consistent? METHODS: 30 unmarried male patients with paranoid schizophrenia (diagnosis based on ICD-10) were included in the study. All subjects lived with their parental families. In all cases, families were complete. Subjects were aged 18-23 (x = 23.23). The mean time of duration of disease was 2.37 (range 0…

Psychological Distress, Parental Hostility, and Child Behavior Problems: The Gendered Moderating Role of Positive Coparenting.

Parents who experience prenatal and early postnatal psychological distress are at higher risk of exhibiting parental hostility, which has an adverse impact on children's behavioral development. The current study investigated longitudinal associations between mothers' and fathers' early psychological distress and later parental hostility and children's behavior problems. The current study also examined whether perceptions of positive coparenting can serve as a haven of psychological safety to buffer the negative spillover from one's own and one's partner's psychological distress to one's later …

Changing a dangerous rural cultural tradition: a randomized control study of youth as extra riders on tractors.

PURPOSE: This study used a randomized control design to evaluate the effectiveness of AgTeen, an in-home, family-based farm safety intervention, in decreasing extra riding on tractors by youth. Having children as extra riders on tractors has deep roots in farm culture, but it can result in serious injury or death. METHODS: The study randomized 151 families into 3 groups: parent-led intervention (fathers taught their families about farm safety), staff-led intervention (staff members who were peer farmers taught families), and a no-treatment control. Mothers, fathers, and all children aged 10-1…

Gulf War-related trauma and psychological distress of Kuwaiti children and their mothers.

The participants were 111 Kuwaiti boys and girls and 59 mothers assessed in 1993 and 2003 to determine exposure to war-related trauma during the Iraqi occupation and subsequent psychological distress. Children were classified into four groups based on what happened to their fathers during the occupation: killed, missing, arrested, or unharmed. The results indicate that the group whose fathers were arrested had the highest level of posttraumatic stress symptoms and the highest level of depression and anxiety in 2003. In 1993, the highest levels of depression for children and their mothers were …
