Relationships between baby feeding types and patterns, gut transit time of meconium and the incidence of neonatal jaundice.

The incidence of neonatal jaundice is reported to have increased in relation to breast feeding and various factors are thought to contribute to this either singularly or in concert. In a group of 150 full-term healthy babies, feeding types and gut transit time of meconium were examined. The findings demonstrated significant differences between feeding types and time taken to evacuate total meconium (p < 0.0001), weight loss/gain patterns (p < 0.0005) and the incidence of moderately severe jaundice (p < 0.01) during the early neonatal period. Baby feeding types were clearly defined in the study

Feeding practices and early neonatal jaundice.

We studied rates of early neonatal jaundice in 135 consecutive well newborns in relation to feeding practice. Breast-fed infants had significantly (p less than 0.01) higher rates of jaundice than bottle-fed infants. In a subset of breast-fed infants, sugar water intake in the first 3 days of life was significantly and inversely related to estimated volume of breast milk intake on the 4th day (r = -0.35, p less than 0.05). Breast-fed infants with high sugar water intake in the first 3 days, and low breast milk intake on the 4th day, tended to have higher rates of jaundice, but these results wer

Circadian reprogramming by timed sodium intake reveals transcriptional pathways of daily salt handling in the colon.

Circadian misalignment of the feeding behavior and the terrestrial cycle is associated with obesity and metabolic perturbations. However, it remains unclear whether the quantity and timing of dietary salt intake influence temporal sodium handling and blood pressure regulation. Here, we demonstrate that the colonic mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) and peripheral clock affect the daily sodium absorption and blood pressure variations. Genes related to sodium handling display diurnal rhythms in synchrony with the daily rhythms of aldosterone and the colonic circadian clock. Cistromic analysis subst…

Astrocytic insulin receptor controls circadian behavior via dopamine signaling in a sexually dimorphic manner.

Mammalian circadian clocks respond to feeding and light cues, adjusting internal rhythms with day/night cycles. Astrocytes serve as circadian timekeepers, driving daily physiological rhythms; however, it's unknown how they ensure precise cycle-to-cycle rhythmicity. This is critical for understanding why mistimed or erratic feeding, as in shift work, disrupts circadian physiology- a condition linked to type 2 diabetes and obesity. Here, we show that astrocytic insulin signaling sets the free-running period of locomotor activity in female mice and food entrainment in male mice. Additionally, abl

Nucleus of the Solitary Tract Serotonin 5-HT2C Receptors Modulate Food Intake.

To meet the challenge to human health posed by obesity, a better understanding of the regulation of feeding is essential. Medications targeting 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT; serotonin) 2C receptors (htr2c; 5-HT2CR) improve obesity. Here we probed the functional significance of 5-HT2CRs specifically within the brainstem nucleus of the solitary tract (5-HT2CRNTS) in feeding behavior. Selective activation of 5-HT2CRNTS decreased feeding and was sufficient to mediate acute food intake reductions elicited by the 5-HT2CR agonist obesity medication lorcaserin. Similar to pro-opiomelanocortin neurons exp…

Endogenous opioid peptides in intrapartum uterine blood.

Endogenous opioid peptides have consistently been reported to exert significant influence on several parameters of reproductive physiology, including tolerance to pain, release of prolactin, pleasurable behavior patterns, and appetite satiety. Immunoreactive endorphins measured in several hundred samples of postpartum uterine blood had a mean value of 190 pg/ml and a range of 60 to 520 pg/ml. Individual values in 100 mothers who were delivered at the Northwest Hospital failed to correlate with doses of postpartum pain medications, infant feeding patterns, and recorded estimates of maternal bon

Multiple optic gland signaling pathways implicated in octopus maternal behaviors and death.

Post-reproductive life in the female octopus is characterized by an extreme pattern of maternal care: the mother cares for her clutch of eggs without feeding until her death. These maternal behaviors are eradicated if the optic glands, the octopus analog of the vertebrate pituitary gland, are removed from brooding females. Despite the optic gland's importance in regulating maternal behavior, the molecular features underlying optic gland function are unknown. Here, we identify major signaling systems of the Octopus bimaculoides optic gland. Through behavioral analyses and transcriptome sequenci

Exploratory behaviour shapes nutrient versus energy foraging priorities in Java sparrows.

Understanding the link between bird personality and food preference would help elucidate individual foraging strategies and species adaptability. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding the relationship between personality and food preference to nutritional or energetic quality. Here, we investigated how exploratory behavior, a consistent behavioral trait, influenced the selection of Java sparrows (Lonchura oryzivora) on foods with different nutritional and energetic qualities. We found that food preference varied across fast-, medium-, to slow-exploring groups. The fast- and medium-explor

Amylin decreases meal size in rats.

Adult male rats were intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected with 1.0 microgram/kg amylin at the beginning of the dark phase in 24 h food deprived or undeprived rats, and a computerized system measured feeding behavior. In food deprived rats, amylin reduced the size of the first postdeprivation meal without affecting intrameal feeding rate or the size or timing of subsequent meals. The same pattern was observed in undeprived rats, but amylin also increased the latency to the first postinjection meal. In a conditioned taste aversion test, i.p. amylin (1 microgram/kg) injection just prior to rats' fir…

Malocclusion impairs cognitive behavior via AgRP signaling in adolescent mice.

INTRODUCTION: Occlusal disharmony induced by deteriorating oral health conditions, such as tooth loss and decreased masticatory muscle due to sarcopenia, is one of the causes of cognitive impairment. Chewing is an essential oral function for maintaining cognitive function not only in the elderly but also in young people. Malocclusion is an occlusal disharmony that commonly occurs in children. The connection between a decline in cognitive function and malocclusion in children has been shown with chronic mouth breathing, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, and thumb/digit sucking habits. However,

Muscarinic antagonist enhances one-trial food-aversion learning in the mollusc Pleurobranchaea.

One hour before training, in two replicate studies on the sea slug Pleurobranchaea californica, all animals (N = 114) received body-cavity injections of scopolamine, oxotremorine, or the equivalent volume of the saline/seawater vehicle that was used to inject the drugs. The low drug doses (2 mumol/kg) were near the threshold for generating observable neurophysiological responses, but did not affect feeding thresholds arising to a stimulus derived from beer (Sbr) and to one derived from squid (Ssq). Before training, the animals did not discriminate between Sbr and Ssq, as indicated by similar t

Insecticide exposure alters feeding and impairs ovary development in a solitary bee.

Insecticide exposure is a growing concern due to its implication in population declines and disruption of key ecosystem services such as pollination. Bees and other beneficial insects can be exposed to insecticides multiple times throughout their lives and across generations, with impacts on behavior and reproduction. To investigate mechanisms underlying reduced reproduction in bees exposed to insecticide over time, I quantified the direct and carryover effects of insecticide exposure on the feeding and ovary development of the solitary bee, Osmia lignaria. Bees were exposed to the insecticide

Comprehensive Evaluation of Forage Provision on the Serum Biochemical Indicators, Behavior and Health of Dairy Calves.

Forage may boost dairy calf health, yet findings vary. We conducted a meta-analysis to assess forage's impact on serum biomarkers, fecal scores, diarrhea, and feeding habits, reviewing 29 studies from 2000 to 2023 across Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and X-Mol. The results showed that forage supplementation increased the concentration of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) in the postweaning calves. Furthermore, Dairy calves with forage access showed higher ruminal pH, more rumination, longer eating times, and less non-nutritive oral behavior than those without forage, in both preweaning and postweaning

Feeding the heat on brown fat.

Nutrition plays a dominant role in human adaptation. Biological traits conferring these adaptations are of considerable significance. Within an obesogenic environment, there is considerable variation among individuals in their susceptibility to weight gain. Some individuals rapidly gain weight, whereas others remain lean without any conscious effort, suggesting that obesity pathogenesis may not be centered on just the primal feeding behavior. The ability of certain individuals to subconsciously resist obesity reveals adaptive calorie-burning mechanisms that may promote fitness. Here, we review…
