Early feeding tolerance in small for gestational age infants with normal versus abnormal antenatal Doppler characteristics.

OBJECTIVES: To determine differences in feeding tolerance amongst preterm small for gestational age (SGA) infants with normal versus abnormal umbilical artery Doppler flow defined as absent or reversed end diastolic flow (AREDF). METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of infants <35 weeks gestational age (GA) and birth weight (BW) <10th percentile. Day of initiation of feeds, days to full feeds and CRIB II scores were the primary outcomes. Clinical characteristics were compared between the groups of SGA infants with normal and AREDF. Multivariable regression models were fit to the dat

CuddleCard: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial evaluating the effect of providing financial support to low-income mothers of preterm infants on parental caregiving in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a leading cause of childhood mortality and developmental disabilities, with persistent socioeconomic disparities in incidence and outcomes. Maternal presence during prolonged neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization is critical for preterm infant health, enabling mothers to provide breast milk, directly breastfeed, and engage in skin-to-skin care-all of which promote infant physiological stability and neurodevelopment. Low-income mothers face significant barriers to visiting the NICU and participating in caregiving due to financial burdens and the psycho

Facial, lingual, and pharyngeal electromyography in infants with Pierre Robin sequence.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the role of electromyography (EMG) in assessing orofacial neurological dysfunction in 81 infants with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS). METHODS: Needle EMG of muscles of the face, tongue, and soft palate, and blink responses were recorded. A two-channel EMG recorded sucking and swallowing during bottle feeding. RESULTS: Neurogenic EMG signs were detected in facial or oral muscles in 17 of 24 associated PRS and 1 of 57 isolated PRS cases (P < 0.0001). Soft palate muscles showed low-amplitude traces in 41.4% of patients who required two surgical steps for cleft palate rep

Effects of the 5-HT1A agonist 8-OH-DPAT on operant feeding in pigs.

The effect of intravenous (i.v.) injection of 8-OH-DPAT on operant food intake in pigs has been examined in animals with food available ad lib and in pigs feeding after 4 h deprivation of food. Operant methods were used to ascertain whether any increases in food intake were due to increased motivation to feed rather than stereotypic chewing movements. In nondeprived animals i.v. injection of 8-OH-DPAT at doses of 10, 30, and 50 micrograms/kg significantly increased food intake in the 45 min following injection. In pigs feeding after 4 h deprivation, i.v. injection of 8-OH-DPAT at doses of 30 a

Nasoenteral feeding tube insertion via fiberoptic endoscope for enteral hyperalimentation.

Total parenteral nutrition can maintain good nutritional status in selected patients. However, it can be accompanied by serious complications. It is generally agreed that enteral alimentation is more economical and safer. Gut should be used for nutritional replenishment whenever feasible. However, large-bore nasogastric feeding tubes can cause problems. Even fine-bore nasogastric tubes can cause aspiration pneumonia in obtunded and debilitated patients. In some patients it is clearly desirable to have the tip of the feeding tube in the distal duodenum or proximal jejunum. Previously described

Residual feed intake in laying hens during the late laying period: associations with nutrient utilization, antioxidant capacity, and gut barrier function.

BACKGROUND: Residual feed intake is defined as the difference between the actual feed intake of poultry and the predicted feed intake based on their growth and maintenance requirements. It reflects the metabolic differences that are genetically determined within the poultry and can effectively indicate the energy levels needed for growth and maintenance. Residual feed intake is a crucial indicator for evaluating the feed utilization efficiency of poultry. Additionally, residual feed intake is a trait with moderate to high heritability, making it a valuable selection criterion for feed efficien

Gastroesophageal reflux during postpyloric versus gastric tube feeding in preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: Whether postpyloric feeding reduces gastroesophageal reflux (GER) in very preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is uncertain. METHODS: Prospective observational study comparing GER profiles measured using 24-h esophageal pH-impedance monitoring in infants with BPD receiving clinically prescribed postpyloric (n = 21) or gastric (n = 24) tube feeding. RESULTS: Participants (median gestational age 25.0 weeks, IQR 24.1-26.9) underwent testing at a median postmenstrual age of 46.6 weeks (IQR 42.7-52.4). The number of GER episodes recorded by impedance varied widely (me

[Deglutition disorders in neurological patients. A prospective study of diagnosis, pattern of impairment, therapy and outcome].

We performed a prospective study on 208 patients with neurogenic dysphagia who were consecutively admitted for swallowing therapy over a 3-year period. The most frequent etiology was stroke (48%). Videofluoroscopic and/or fiber optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing were performed in 204 patients. Swallowing therapy was comprised of restitution methods, compensation, and adaptation, each of which was applied in more than 80% of the patients. Mean duration of swallowing therapy was 2 months (full oral patients 1 month, patients dependent on tube feeding or tracheostomy 2.5 and 3.5 months, re

Metabolic response in blood and cerebrospinal fluid during feed restriction: Identification of potential metabolic signals associated with individual feed intake rebound.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of feed restriction and refeeding on metabolic and AA profiles in blood serum, and on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) profiles during the feed restriction period, using a controlled feeding model. Additionally, the study aims to identify metabolic signals generated during feed restriction that may help explain individual variability in the feed intake recovery. Following 2 wk of adaptation, 8 primiparous Holstein cows housed in individual stalls with free access to water were fed ad libitum for 5 d (basal period), followed by 50% feed restriction for

Invited review: Use of butyrate to promote gastrointestinal tract development in calves.

Promotion of microbial butyrate production in the reticulorumen is a widely used method for enhancing forestomach development in calves. Additional acceleration of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) development, both the forestomach and lower parts of the GIT (e.g., abomasum, intestine, and also pancreas), can be obtained by dietary butyrate supplementation. For this purpose, different sources (e.g., butyrate salts or butyrins), forms (e.g., protected or unprotected), methods (e.g., in liquid feed or solid feed), and periods (e.g., before or after weaning) of butyrate administration can be used. The

Elevated plasma glucagon-like Peptide-1 levels are associated with enteral feeding intolerance in traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Enteral feeding intolerance is a frequent and clinically significant complication in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), yet its mechanisms remain poorly understood and predictive tools are lacking. We investigated a prospective study to determine whether elevated circulating glucagon-like peptide-1(GLP-1) is associated with feeding intolerance after TBI and to assess its predictive utility. METHODS: A prospective cohort study in a tertiary neuro-ICU including 109 adults aged 18-80 years with TBI was conducted. A standardised enteral feeding strategy targeted 25 k

Feeding difficulties in a neonate with primary cricopharyngeal achalasia treated by cricopharyngeal myotomy.

Primary cricopharyngeal achalasia resulting from failure of relaxation of the cricopharyngeus muscle is a rare but significant cause of dysphagia in newborns. Symptoms may be nonspecific. Although surgical management with cricopharyngeal myotomy has been employed successfully for the treatment of this disorder, swallowing difficulties may persist postoperatively, probably due to association with other esophageal abnormalities. Alternative methods of feeding may be required to ensure adequate nutrient intake. We report the case of a full-term, 2-day-old neonate with this rare clinical condition
