Adapting to the Disconnection: An Examination of School Alienation and Adolescent Gun Carrying.

OBJECTIVE: As school shootings and youth gun violence continue to rise in the United States, it is imperative to identify risk factors linked to gun carrying among adolescents. This study examines the relationship between perceived school alienation and the likelihood of adolescents carrying a gun to school. Specifically, it tests whether school alienation increases adolescent inclination to carry a gun to school. METHODS: This study used an all-male sample from waves I (1994-1995) and II (1996) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) with a final analyti

The use of muscle activity measures in combat shooting assessments.

Current testing of small-arms weapons focuses on measuring accuracy in optimal, supported positions whereas using a more dynamic test may be more informative. Previous work has shown that accuracy, shot interval, and weapon stability degrades over prolonged shooting and only the latter two measures differ between weapon configurations. The aim of the current study was to evaluate muscle activity to understand if signs of fatigue could add information about the optimal ergonomic weapon. The 200 ms of electromyography from six upper limb muscles immediately before each of 60 shots for four weapo

Assessment of risk factors and preventive measures for inorganic and organic GSR secondary transfer in arrest scenarios.

This study monitored the transfer of inorganic and organic gunshot residues (IGSR and OGSR) in cases where indirect exposure might be questioned, such as during arrests. Mock arrest scenarios (n = 180) were created to assess the effect of two variables on the secondary transfer. First, the level of contact between the detained and the officer (low, medium, and high) during the arrest protocols. Second, the activities preceding the arrest include situations where the officer or person of interest (POI) discharges a firearm or handles a gun without firing. Additionally, measures to mitigate the

Cranial trauma in handgun executions: Circumferential delamination defect and its relationship with contact/close-range shooting.

Skeletal evidence usually constitutes the only source of information to interpret lesion patterns that help to clarify the circumstances surrounding death. The examination and interpretation of bone trauma are essential to the application and utility of anthropology as a forensic science. When discussing the effect of gunshot wounds in bone, it becomes imperative to differentiate between short and long-distance injuries based on clear, distinct, and observable signs. To contribute to the debate, our focus is directed toward the external analysis of the so-called circumferential delamination de

Duration of Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Ballistic Fractures to the Extremities.

BACKGROUND: In the U.S. there are thousands of ballistic firearm injuries to the extremities and subsequent infections, yearly. There is a lack of consensus regarding the ideal duration of antibiotic treatment to prevent infection of these wounds. Our study investigated infection rate among ballistic extremity fracture patients based on antibiotic prophylaxis duration, operative management, wound severity, and fracture location. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review of ballistic extremity fracture patients from a single trauma center from 01/01/2010 to 12/31/2020. RESULTS: Of 161

Successful Treatment of a Nail Gun Injury in Right Parietal Region and Superior Sagittal Sinus.

BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION: Nail injuries are important causes of penetrating craniocerebral injuries. Theirs incidence is very low, but the injuries can be fatal. Since the nail gun was gradually popularized in 1959, the incidence of nail injuries has been increasing. Here we report a case of nail gun injury to superior sagittal sinus and review the literature of the past 60 years to find out what are the possible factors of nail gun injury and what are their respective ratios? CLINICAL REPORT: An 18-year-old male patient was accidentally injured in the head by the worker's nail gun, accompanie

Assessment of humaneness using gunshot targeting the brain and cervical spine for cervid depopulation under field conditions.

Population reduction or eradication of domestic or non-domestic species may be required to address their impacts on the environment, other species, or human interests. Firearms are often used to accomplish these practical management objectives, and there is increased concern that the methods used may compromise animal welfare. We document the accuracy and humaneness of gunshot placement to the brain and cervical vertebrae of Philippine deer (Rusa marianna) on Guam during depopulation activities as a model for meeting AVMA standards of euthanasia under field conditions (e.g., animal is not in h…

Lead intoxication in dogs: risk assessment of feeding dogs trimmings of lead-shot game.

BACKGROUND: Expanding lead-based bullets, commonly used for hunting of big game, produce a scattering of lead particles in the carcass around the wound channel. Trimmings around this channel, which are sometimes fed to dogs, may contain lead particles. The aim of this study was to assess potential health effects of feeding dogs such trimmings. RESULTS: Lead ingestion most commonly causes gastrointestinal and neurological clinical signs, although renal, skeletal, haematological, cardiovascular and biochemical effects have also been reported. Experimental data indicate that a daily dose of arou

Impulse noise injury prediction based on the cochlear energy.

The current impulse noise criteria for the protection against impulse noise injury do not incorporate an objective measure of hearing protection. A new biomechanically-based model has been developed based on improvement of the Auditory Hazard Assessment Algorithm for the Human (AHAAH) using the integrated cochlear energy (ICE) as the damage risk correlate (DRC). The model parameters have been corrected using the latest literature data. The anomalous dose-response inversion behavior of the AHAAH model was eliminated. The modeling results show that the annular ligament (AL) parameters are the do

Sources of guns to dangerous people: what we learn by asking them.

Gun violence exacts a lethal toll on public health. This paper focuses on reducing access to firearms by dangerous offenders, contributing original empirical data on the gun transactions that arm offenders in Chicago. Conducted in the fall of 2013, analysis of an open-ended survey of 99 inmates of Cook County Jail focuses on a subset of violence-prone individuals with the goal of improving law enforcement actions. Among our principal findings: *Our respondents (adult offenders living in Chicago or nearby) obtain most of their guns from their social network of personal connections. Rarely is th…

Pattern injuries from blows with the muzzle end of a handgun.

Pistols, revolvers and blank guns are not only used to discharge cartridges, but also for hits to the victim. In such cases, the blows preferably affect the head and/or the interposed hands protecting the body. The impact is mostly exerted either by the grip of a pistol or the butt of a revolver. In vigorous thrusts inflicted with the muzzle end of the weapon, the edge of the barrel may produce circular punch lesions with central skin flaps roughly corresponding to the bore. As in other kinds of pistol-whipping, the scalp wounds may be associated with fractures of the skull and even with brain

Planned complex suicide by penetrating captive-bolt gunshot and hanging: case study and review of the literature.

Captive-bolt guns or slaughterer's guns are devices widely used in meat industry and private farmer households for slaughtering animal stocks. They consist of a simple cylindrical metal tube (barrel) with a metal bolt placed in their centre (around 9-15cm long and 1-1.5cm wide). The bolt is actuated by a trigger pull and is propelled forward by compressed air or by the discharge of a blank powder gun cartridge. Violent deaths inflicted by captive-bolt guns are rarely encountered in forensic practice and are predominantly suicidal events. We report an unusual complex suicide by hanging and self

Sudden death following periorbital pellet injury.

PURPOSE: To report an uneventful sudden death because of a periorbital pellet injury. METHOD: Review of autopsy findings. RESULTS: A 20-year-old hunter was shot accidentally during hunting. At autopsy, the body showed no significant injuries or deformity except for the pellet injuries and ecchymosis on the medial side of the left lower eyelid. Skull roentgenography located a pellet in the base of the cranium. Upon craniotomy, the cause of death was diagnosed as subarachnoidal haemorrhage due to incomplete basilar artery injury. The pellet entered through the medial cantus, passed through the

Therapeutic efficacy of magnesium after acoustic trauma caused by gunshot noise in guinea pigs.

CONCLUSIONS: The present findings show that magnesium administration can significantly reduce threshold shift 7 days after gunshot noise exposure. However, this improvement seems to be temporary, suggesting a probable advantage in prolonging the treatment. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of magnesium administration after hearing loss induced by gunshot noise. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-eight guinea pigs were exposed to an impulse noise (blank shot from a rifle; 170 or 176 dB SPL peak). The therapeutic efficacy of magnesium was evaluated by administering either the treatment

An indirect ELISA to detect the serologic response of elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) inoculated with Brucella abortus strain RB51.

An indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to identify elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) with Brucella abortus strain RB51 (RB51)-specific antibodies using a mouse monoclonal antibody specific for bovine IgG1. This test was relatively easy to perform, accurate, and easily reproducible; therefore it could be standardized for use between laboratories. In addition, we attempted to compensate for inherent variabilities encountered when comparing ELISA readings from multiple samples taken from many animals over time. Optical density (OD) readings for each sample were converted i

[study of acoustic trauma in hunters using otoacoustic emission recording].

Transitory otoacoustic emissions (TOAE) were analyzed in 48 ears of male hunters (age range: 30-45 years: mean age: 37 years) and in a population with normal hearing. All the ears had TOAE. The incidence of TOAE for the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 KHz frequential bands was significantly lower in hunters than in the normal subjects (p < 0.001). The mean amplitude of TOAE was significantly lower in hunters (9.2 dB SPL) than in the control group (16 dB SPL; p < 0.001). The amplitude of the TOAE for the frequencies 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 KHz was significantly lower in hunters than in controls (p < 0.001).

Doppler radar velocity measurements for wound ballistics experiments.

Bullet velocity is a basic parameter in wound ballistics studies. It is usually measured electronically by means of a variety of solid or photoelectric barriers connected to equipment measuring the time elapsing between impulses, enabling the velocity to be calculated. With the advent of Doppler radar velocity measurement of large calibre artillery shells, the use of this equipment for wound ballistics experiments was investigated. Anaesthetized pigs were shot at a range of 9-10 metres and the velocities measured by Doppler radar and photocells were compared. A very good correspondence between
