PURPOSE: To evaluate treatment outcomes after intramedullary nailing using Ender nails for diaphyseal forearm fractures.
METHODS: 11 male and 9 female patients aged 6 to 15 (mean, 12) years underwent intramedullary nailing using Ender nails plus cast immobilisation for fractures of both the radius and ulna after conservative treatment had failed.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Overuse injuries of the hand, wrist, forearm, and shoulder are common among endoscopists and may be from repetitive pinching and gripping forces or awkward posturing. In this pilot study, we evaluated distal upper-extremity musculoskeletal load during colonoscopy (1) to confirm the feasibility of performing ergonomic measurements in endoscopists and (2) to identify tasks that may contribute to overuse injuries.

METHODS: Stimulus-triggered rectified EMG averages after ulnar nerve and cutaneous stimulation, in wrist flexors and extensors during tonic contraction, were compared in 18 controls and 19 patients.

We report a case of ulnar nerve palsy following forearm fracture in a 13-year-old girl. Significant anterior angulation and displacement of the ulna were noted. Operation was performed 3 months after the injury, when no recovery of numbness and claw hand deformity were demonstrated. Intra-operatively the ulnar nerve was found to be embedded between fragments of the fractured ulna, which showed lack of callus formation on the preoperative radiograph. The patient achieved complete recovery of sensory and motor functions 4 months after the surgery.

Forearm compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency that usually requires release of the superficial muscle compartments. Thirty-three patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the anteriolateral part of the tongue underwent a 50 percent resection of the tongue. The surgical defect was reconstructed with a microvascular radial forearm flap. We are reporting a case of complete ulnar nerve paralysis due to compression from a false aneurysm located in the distal forearm. The aneurysm developed after the patient stabbed himself with a meat hook. The ulnar paralysis developed after a 14-day period of latency. The diagnosis was made using detailed patient history, clinical examination, and a sonogram. Early surgical decompression of the nerve led to complete restitution of all functions.

Isolated lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve entrapment syndromes are uncommon. This report describes the compression of the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve of the forearm at the level of its passage through the superficial antebrachial fascia, distal to the elbow crease. Numbness and a painful dysesthesia over the radial aspect of the volar forearm were documented. Failure of conservative treatment necessitated surgical decompression.

The current study is a retrospective clinical and radiographic review of all children treated with intramedullary Steinmann pins for fixation of diaphyseal forearm fractures at one institution. The surgical management of anterior neck contractures, related to burn injuries, is a challenging problem for reconstructive surgeons. The use of sensate expanded radial forearm fasciocutaneous free flaps in two patients suffering from anterior burn contractures of the neck is presented as an alternative method of surgical management. The advantages of employing sensate expanded radial forearm free flaps to reconstruct anterior neck contractures are also discussed in this paper.

We undertook a retrospective study of 82 patients with 128 diaphyseal fractures of the forearm who had been operated at our institution for their initial injury and subsequently had implant removal when the fractures had healed.
