PURPOSE: Nasal bone fractures are the most common facial bone fractures. Although olfactory dysfunction is one of the most common complications in patients with nasal bone fractures, few studies on olfactory dysfunction in nasal bone fractures have been reported. The authors attempted to find the frequency and course of olfactory dysfunction and hypothesize its mechanism in patients with nasal bone fractures.
METHODS: Sixty-six patients who underwent closed reduction were examined using the Korean version of Sniffin' Sticks test (KVSS) II at preoperation, 1 month and 6 months postoperation. W

Meteorin-like protein (Metrnl), homologous to the initially identified neurotrophic factor Meteorin, is a secreted, multifunctional protein. Here we used mouse models to investigate Metrnl's role in skeletal development and bone fracture healing. During development Metrnl was expressed in the perichondrium and primary ossification center. In neonates, single cell RNA-seq of diaphyseal bone demonstrated strongest expression of Metrnl transcript by osteoblasts. In vitro, Metrnl was osteoinductive, increasing osteoblast differentiation and mineralization in tissue culture models. In vivo, loss of

Designing weight-bearing exercises for patients with lower-limb bone fractures is challenging and requires a systematic approach that accounts for patient-specific loading conditions. However, 'trial-and-error' approaches are commonplace in clinical settings due to the lack of a fundamental understanding of the effect of weight-bearing exercises on the bone healing process. Whilst computational modelling has the potential to assist clinicians in designing effective patient-specific weight-bearing exercises, current models do not explicitly account for the effects of muscle loading, which could

BACKGROUND: Rapid prediction of adverse bone fracture healing outcome (e.g., nonunion and/or delayed union) is essential to advise adjunct therapies to reduce patient suffering and improving healing outcome. Radiographic diagnostic methods remain ineffective during early healing, resulting in average nonunion diagnosis times surpassing six months. To address this clinical deficit, we developed a novel diagnostic device to predict fracture healing outcome by noninvasive telemetric measurements of fracture bending stiffness. This study evaluated the hypothesis that our diagnostic antenna system

PURPOSE: The diagnostic criteria for osteoporosis are based on the bone mineral density (BMD) level in the lumbar spine and femur bone. Patients with osteoporotic fractures were diagnosed with osteoporosis. While systemic BMD and mandibular cortical bone morphology are correlated, this has not been studied in patients with a history of osteoporotic fractures. Therefore, purpose of this study was researching the mandibular cortical bone morphology in patients with osteoporotic fractures.
METHODS: The subjects were 55 female and 20 male patients with osteoporotic fractures. Patients were divide

With increasing age of the population, countries across the globe are facing a substantial increase in osteoporotic fractures. Genetic association signals for fractures have been reported at the RSPO3 locus, but the causal gene and the underlying mechanism are unknown. Here we show that the fracture reducing allele at the RSPO3 locus associate with increased RSPO3 expression both at the mRNA and protein levels, increased trabecular bone mineral density and reduced risk mainly of distal forearm fractures in humans. We also demonstrate that RSPO3 is expressed in osteoprogenitor cells and osteobl

PURPOSE: In this study, the results after corrective osteotomy of the base of the first metacarpal bone are presented.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: There were 24 malunion following a fracture of the base of the first metacarpal, these included 19 Bennett's fractures, 3 Rolando fractures, and 2 Winterstein fractures. The time between the corrective osteotomy and the initial trauma averaged 16 (range, 4 to 66) weeks. The Bennett and Rolando fractures had an average step-off of 2.3 (range, 0 to 4) mm, as well as gaps between 0.9 and 5.4 mm in the basal articular surface of the first metacarpal. There w

In silico modeling is a powerful strategy to investigate the biological events occurring at tissue, cellular and subcellular level during bone fracture healing. However, most current models do not consider the impact of the inflammatory response on the later stages of bone repair. Indeed, as initiator of the healing process, this early phase can alter the regenerative outcome: if the inflammatory response is too strongly down- or upregulated, the fracture can result in a non-union. This review covers the fundamental information on fracture healing, in silico modeling and experimental validatio

The appearance of fracture complications can present itself as a difficult scenario in a veterinarian's practice, and it can be difficult to diagnose and have a poor prognosis. The recognition of the different types of nonunion fractures can enable quick guidance on the best way to act, thus reducing the cost of treatment and the patient's suffering. The objective of this study was to create 3D models of nonunion fractures in long bones (3D NUFs). The study was carried out in three stages: 1) creating biscuit models from representations of nonunion fractures; 2) scanning the biscuit models of

AIM: This study aimed to identify the risk of pathological fractures after bone tumour biopsy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty rabbit femurs were divided into groups according to defect size: Control (no defect), type 1 (10% width), type 2 (20% width), type 3 (30% width), and type 4 (40% width). Another 20 were also divided into control, type A (27% length), type B (40% length), and type C (53% length) groups. Performing femoral head compression testing allowed each parameter (maximum load, displacement, elastic modulus, and fracture energy) to be calculated individually.
RESULTS: Compressive m

In chronic kidney disease (CKD), phosphate homoeostasis plays a central role in the development of mineral and bone disorder (MBD) together with decreased serum calcium and elevated serum parathyroid hormone, fibroblast growth factor 23 and sclerostin levels. Today there are only a few data exploring the direct role of abnormal phosphate homoeostasis and hyperphosphataemia in the development of CKD-MBD. On the other hand, several studies have looked at the link between hyperphosphataemia and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in CKD, but there is a lack of evidence to indicate that lowerin

INTRODUCTION: We previously reported the classification of the scaphoid fracture nonunions as linear, cystic, and sclerotic or displaced types based on radiographic findings. We have been treating the linear and cystic type fractures via screw fixation without bone grafting and the sclerotic or displaced type fractures via screw fixation with bone grafting. In this retrospective study, we report the treatment outcomes of the linear and cystic types of scaphoid fracture nonunions.
METHODS: Nineteen patients with linear and cystic type scaphoid fracture nonunions were included. Two patients had

The aim of this study is to establish the falsifiability of the "osteoporotic hypothesis" for hip fracture, according to which the bone density and mineral composition of bone tissue in patients with hip fracture is poorer than when no such fracture is present, and that this circumstance is relevant to the occurrence of a fracture. The study population consisted of forty patients treated with arthroplasty. Twenty patients with femoral neck fracture and another twenty with hip osteoarthritis received the same diagnostic protocol and the same antibiotic, anaesthetic, surgical and antithrombotic

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There is growing evidence that bone health is impacted during and after critical illness in multiple ways. In this review, we provide a practical update on postcritical care bone loss with an insight on identification of persons at risk, prevention and treatment strategies.
RECENT FINDINGS: Critical illness is associated with an increase in bone turnover and with an uncoupling between bone resorption and bone formation. This results in loss of bone mass, as highlighted by changes in bone marker serum levels and in bone mineral density. Data suggest that ICU survivors are at

Vascularized small-bone grafting is an efficient and often necessary surgical approach for nonunion or necrosis of several bones in particular sites of the body, including scaphoid, lunate, distal ulna, and clavicle. The medial femoral condyle is an excellent graft source that can be used in treating scaphoid, ulna, clavicle, or lower-extremity bone defects, including nonunion. Vascularized bone grafting to the small bones, particularly involving reconstruction of damaged cartilage surfaces, should enhance subchondral vascular supply and help prevent cartilage regeneration. Vascularized osteop

Objectives Most of the fractures of the bones of the forearm in children are successfully treated conservatively with closed reduction and casting. The outcomes remain variable and the patients may require additional fracture manipulation or formal surgical intervention due to residual angulations. The present study assesses the radiological and functional outcomes of treating displaced forearm fractures in children with intramedullary flexible titanium elastic nailing. Methods A total of 31 patients aged between 7 and 15 years old with displaced forearm fractures underwent flexible titanium

CASE: Fracture of a sesamoid bone of the thumb is rare. We report a case of such a fracture after hyperextension of the thumb in a 26-year-old woman. After a volar plate injury was excluded, she was treated nonoperatively with 5 weeks of immobilization followed by physical therapy.
CONCLUSION: After reviewing the current literature describing sesamoid fractures of the thumb, we recommend that fracture of the sesamoid of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint should be regarded as an avulsion fracture. The role of surgical intervention should be limited to patients with a painful nonunion.
