Fibrous dysplasia has various ways of presentation including syndromic associations and secondary changes within the lesion. We present a case of a 21-year-old female with craniofacial fibrous dysplasia, presenting with proptosis and intermittent blurring of vision due to focal fibrous dysplasia involving the frontal bone with secondary aneurysmal bone formation that was provisionally diagnosed on imaging and confirmed on histopathology. This case demonstrates the typical imaging findings of fibrous dysplasia with seldom encountered secondary aneurysmal bone cyst formation and also discusses a…

We describe the treatment of patients having syndromic craniosynostosis with severe craniofacial abnormality. One patient had Cruzon's syndrome, one had Beare-Stevenson cutis gyrata syndrome, and four had Pfeiffers syndrome. Anterior cranial deformity in all patients was treated using fronto-orbital advancement (FOA) by gradual distraction. Initially, the frontal and supraorbital bones were removed and remodeled. Next, the frontal bones were fixed loosely to the supraorbital bones with absorbable threads. Then, the supraorbital and temporal bones were connected using distraction devices on bot…

Head trauma in the pediatric population carries a high rate of morbidity and mortality. The major causes of head trauma are related to falls … kull fractures with significant displacement of the exposed brain, extensive bilateral parietal and frontal bone fractures, and bilateral temporal bone displaced fractures more extensive on the left. A bilateral hemicraniectomy was performed due to diffuse cerebral edema and a left frontal ventriculostomy was placed to monitor and manage intracranial pressure …

BACKGROUND: Despite the development of anterior skull base surgery, the anatomy of the nasal bone and anterior cribriform plate remains unclear. A recent study confirmed 2 distinct foramina in the anterior part of cribriform plate: the ethmoidal slit (ES) and the cribroethmoidal foramen (CF). The aim of this study was to specify their content, their anatomic relationship to the frontal sinus and skull base, and their potential value in skull base surgery.
METHODS: Dissections were performed on 36 cadaver heads. Macro- and microscopic examinations were carried out. Microcomputed tomography sca

CONTEXT: Morgagni-Stewart-Morel syndrome is defined as the presence of hyperostosis frontalis interna, variably associated with metabolic, e … ts pathogenesis. Endocrine or nutritional disorders may have led to an altered bone metabolism with frontal bone apposition. On the other hand, the severity of our patient's neurological and psychiatric symptoms correlates well with the severity of her hyperostosis frontalis interna and the cortical atrophy.

A retrospective study of 379 consecutive patients who underwent operative repair of facial fractures at the West Virginia University Medical Center was carried out. Blindness developed in at least one eye in 21 (6%) of the 379 patients studied. Le Fort II and Le Fort III fractures, frontal bone and frontal sinus fractures, severe fractures of the zygoma, and fractures of the orbital floor were associated with fractures of the lesser sphenoid wing and optic canal in 5 of the patients studied. These 5 patients had indirect optic nerve injuries, as determined by CT scan and clinical criteria, whi…

We demonstrate a novel method of endoscopic frontal-orbital advancement for the treatment of unicoronal craniosynostosis. The evolution of this cranioplasty modality burrows from an established precedent of safety and technical experience in strip craniectomies and endoscopic brow surgery. The procedure facilitates osteotomies similar to open frontal-orbital advancement and uses reabsorbable materials to achieve immediate intraoperative correction of unicoronal craniosynostosis through smaller incisions. The patients in the study underwent endoscopic frontal-orbital advancement and cranial vau

The osteoplastic flap is a widely used technique as an approach to frontal sinus disease. All current textbooks describe the technique with basing the flap inferiorly along the orbital rim and across the naso-frontal suture line. Since 1977, we have had occasion to base the flap superiorly in eight cases with good results. We feel that the superiorly based flap is ideally indicated in unilateral disease, particularly in the balding male, where a coronal incision would be very obvious. It is also a more direct approach. The skin incision itself can be parallel to the brow or almost identical to

Pneumosinus dilatans (PD) is a rare condition characterized by abnormal expansion of the paranasal sinus without bone destruction or significant mucosal disease. Its association with Dyke-Davidoff Masson syndrome (DDMS) is particularly uncommon. We report the case of a 54-year-old female with learning disabilities, pseudoseizures, and asthma who was referred to our clinic after an MRI performed for decreased visual acuity revealed marked dilatation of the large left frontal sinus. She denied nasal symptoms but reported frontal headaches. Endoscopic examination was unremarkable. Imaging demonst

Frontonasal dysplasia (FND) is a rare syndrome characterized by malformations of the central portion of the face, especially of the forehead, nose, and philtrum. FND is associated with hypertelorism, a hidden encephalocele, and a cleft of the nose. Occasionally, affected individuals also experience abnormalities of the brain and craniofacial bones. In such cases, a frontal lipoma or calcification of the falx cerebri suggest the existence of a lipoma of the corpus callosum. We present the case of a male newborn with a congenital lipoma 15 mm in size located in the medial frontal line. Magnetic

Introduction: Canine tooth syndrome is a rare condition defined by the simultaneous presence of superior oblique palsy and Brown syndrome, resulting from pathological changes in the trochlear region. This syndrome can develop through various mechanisms, including dog bites, head trauma, infections, inflammation, and scarring. This report highlights its occurrence following sinus surgery for the first time. Methods: Medical and surgical records of an 18-year-old girl who presented with reading position diplopia after sinus surgery for right-side frontoethmoidal osteoma were retrospectively revi

Craniosynostosis isolated to the frontosphenoidal suture is an extremely rare entity, distinct from other types of synostotic anterior plagiocephaly, from the embryologic, phenotypic and endocranial morphology viewpoints. Embryologically, the sphenoid bone has two origins, which morphogenetically represent 2 distinct subunits. Depending on the region involved, unique craniofacial features involving the forehead, temporal region and orbit will be demonstrated. A case of frontosphenoidal suture synostosis depicting these features is presented. In addition, a literature review was performed and a

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Treatment of metopic craniosynostosis often involves bitemporal expansion of the anterior cranium. This report compares perioperative variables of a surgical technique in which the fronto-orbital bandeau is bent in situ to traditional fronto-orbital advancement and remodeling (FOAR).
METHOD/DESCRIPTION: Six patients undergoing the hinge technique were compared to the senior author's 6 most recent conventional FOARs. Study and control cohorts were reasonably well matched for age and sex; only those with nonsyndromic, single-suture metopic synostosis were included. Perio

Ninety frontoethmoidal fractures, as a result of war injuries from 1991 to 1994, produced 0.7% of all war injuries (i.e., 9% of head and neck injuries treated in the Military Medical Academy, Belgrade). These injuries were mainly part of complex endocranial, orbital, and zygomaticomaxillary injuries, and were rarely isolated. The central part of these injuries were in the ethmoidal region, which was isolatedly injured in 23.3% of the cases. There was 53.3% injuries with small fragments of explosive devices inside the wound, and 16.7% of through-and-through wounds were caused by sniper bullets.
