An Autopsy Case of a Patient With Corticobasal Degeneration and a History of Acute Restlessness and Stupor.

Some patients with corticobasal degeneration (CBD) present with neuropsychiatric symptoms, including frontal lobe symptoms. However, stupor is rarely reported. Here, we report a case of acute restlessness at onset, which was clinically diagnosed as frontotemporal dementia (FTD) but was found to be CBD at autopsy. A 71-year-old woman with COVID-19 presented to our hospital. At the age of 62, she had suddenly become restless and confused without any preceding motor or psychiatric symptoms. She was treated with psychotropic drugs but subsequently entered stupor and was admitted to a psychiatric h…

[An autopsied case of corticobasal degeneration with onset of nonfluent aphasia revealing symmetrical cerebral involvement].

Herein we describe a patient with established corticobasal degeneration with onset of nonfluent aphasia and showing symmetrical cerebral inv … ogical examination, the fixed brain weighed 1,010 g and showed bilateral symmetrical atrophy of the frontal lobes. Histopathological examination revealed neuronal loss and gliosis in the frontal lobes, especially in the frontal convexity, superior frontal gyrus and precentral gyrus. Gallyas-Braak silver staining showed astrocytic plaques, argyrophilic threads …

Correlation between white matter damage and gray matter lesions in multiple sclerosis patients.

We observed the characteristics of white matter fibers and gray matter in multiple sclerosis patients, to identify changes in diffusion tens … osis patients. Gray matter volumes were significantly different between the two groups in the right frontal lobe (superior frontal, middle frontal, precentral, and orbital gyri), right parietal lobe (postcentral and inferior parietal gyri), right temporal lobe (caudate nucleus), right occipital lobe (middle occipital gyrus), right insula, right parahippocampal …

The influence of age and sex on the absolute cell numbers of the human brain cerebral cortex.

The human cerebral cortex is one of the most evolved regions of the brain, responsible for most higher-order neural functions. Since nerve c … mporal lobe, we found more neurons in the occipital lobe of men, higher neuronal density in women's frontal lobe, but no sex differences in the number and density of cells in the other lobes and the whole neocortex. On average, the neocortex has ~10.2 billion neurons, 34% in the frontal lobe and the remaining 66% uniformly distributed among the other 3 lobes. …

Longitudinal changes in cortical thickness in children after traumatic brain injury and their relation to behavioral regulation and emotional control.

The purpose of this study was to assess patterns of cortical development over time in children who had sustained traumatic brain injury (TBI … l thinning) by 18 months post-injury including large bilateral regions of the medial aspects of the frontal lobes and anterior cingulate. Cortical thinning within the OI group was evident over time in dorsolateral frontal and temporal regions bilaterally and aspects of the left medial frontal and precuneus, and right inferior parietal regions. Longitudinal ana …

Mentalizing and self-other distinction in visual perspective taking: the analysis of temporal neural processing using high-density EEG.

This high density EEG report dissects the neural processing in the visual perspective taking using four experimental comparisons (Arrow, Avatar and Self, Other). Early activation differences occurred between the Avatar and the Arrow condition in primary visual pathways concomitantly with alpha and beta phase locked responses predominant in the Avatar condition. In later time points, brain activation was stronger for the Avatar condition in paracentral lobule of frontal lobe. When taking the other's perspective, there was an increased recruitment of generators in the occipital and temporal lobe…

Counterfactual cognitive deficit in persons with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Counterfactuals are mental representations of alternatives to past events. Recent research has shown them to be important for other cognitive processes, such as planning, causal reasoning, problem solving, and decision making-all processes independently linked to the frontal lobes. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that counterfactual thinking is impaired in some patients with Parkinson's disease and is linked to frontal dysfunction in these patients. Methods. Measures of counterfactual processing and frontal lobe functioning were administered to 24 persons with Parkinson's diseas…

Left parietal structural connectivity mediates typical and atypical language laterality in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Subjects with left temporal lobe epilepsy may either show altered hemispheric language lateralization or retain typical, left lateralization. Examining the integrity of white matter pathways involved in the adaptation or maintenance of language lateralization in these patients could have important clinical implications for preserving or potentiating compensatory language mechanisms. METHODS: We combined task functional magnetic resonance imaging and structural diffusion metrics to determine the dependency of lobe-based language laterality on white matter integrity in healthy partic

The frontooccipital interaction mechanism of high-frequency acoustoelectric signal.

We observed a strongest transmission strength within the frontal lobe, and the global temporal statistics indicated that the frontal lobe features in acoustoelectric signal transmission. Surgical treatment of extra-hypothalamic epilepsies presenting with gelastic seizures.

We provide an overview of the surgical outcome of extra-hypothalamic epilepsies with gelastic seizures based on an original case report and a summary of the literature. Twenty-two articles providing information on the outcome of resective surgery in 39 patients with extra-hypothalamic gelastic seizures from the temporal (19 patients) or frontal lobe (20 patients) were selected. We add another case of temporal lobe gelastic seizures to the literature with a video demonstrating the mirthful component of this patient's laughing seizures. Drug-refractory cases of gelastic seizures from the tempora…

Frontal White Matter Hyperintensities and Executive Functioning Performance in Older Adults.

Frontal lobe structures decline faster than most other brain regions in older adults. Age-related change in the frontal lobe is associated with poorer executive function (e.g., working memory, switching/set-shifting, and inhibitory control). The effects and presence of frontal lobe white matter hyperintensities (WMH) on executive function in normal aging is relatively unknown. The current study assessed relationships between region-specific frontal WMH load and cognitive performance in healthy older adults using three executive function tasks from the NIH Toolbox (NIHTB) Cognition Battery. A c…

Is the Brixton Spatial Anticipation Test sensitive to frontal dysfunction? Evidence from patients with frontal and posterior lesions.

INTRODUCTION: The Brixton Spatial Anticipation Test is a widely used neuropsychological test, thought to assess executive functions and to be sensitive to frontal lobe lesions. Our aim was to investigate Brixton performance in patients with focal frontal or posterior lesions and healthy controls. METHOD: We compared performance on the Brixton in a sample of 24 frontal patients, 18 posterior patients and 22 healthy controls. Both overall performance (total number of errors) and error types were analyzed. RESULTS: We found no significant differences between frontal and posterior patients and h…

FDG PET/CT Findings of Unsuspected Pulmonary Epithelioid Angiosarcoma Manifested as a Brain Metastasis.

A 42-year-old man presented paroxysmal sharp pain in the right side of the head. Head CT showed a lesion in the right frontal lobe. MRI of the head suggested the possibility of metastasis. FDG PET/CT showed increased uptake corresponding to lesions in the right frontal lobe of the brain, the left upper lobe of lung, and the left adrenal gland, respectively. Cerebral and pulmonary lesions were both resected. Histopathology confirmed that both lesions are primary epithelioid angiosarcomas.
