[Experiences with the median drainage method of the frontal sinus in post-traumatic surgery].

In 127 industrial and traffic accidents, which showed a damage of the rhinobasis or the posterior wall of the frontal sinus with or without dural rent, median drainage of the frontal sinuses was done after primary wound toilet. In all cases a sure and good working continuous drainage was achieved. Extra- or intracranial complications just as a re-stenosis of the new shaped approach were not observed. Short advices are given for the method of procedure.

Epidural mucopyocele: diagnosis and management.

Mucopyoceles of the frontoethmoid sinuses occurring as an epidural mass are uncommon. Four patients with this condition have been managed over the last eight years by the authors. Two patients had early recurrence of their disease following carefully performed ablation and frontal craniectomy. Marsupialization, or permanently draining the ablated frontal sinus cavity into the nose, was the initial treatment of the other two patients, and subsequently the therapy of choice for all patients in this series.

Analysis of Sinus Inflammation Associated With Maxillary Sinus Fungal Ball Based on CT Imaging.

Background: Paranasal sinus fungal balls usually occur unilaterally, and the maxillary sinus is most commonly involved. However, other sinuses could be concomitantly inflammed, and this phenomenon is rarely discussed. Aims/Objectives: To evaluate the severity of maxillary sinus fungal ball (MSFB) and the occurrence of sinus inflammation in paranasal sinuses according to the image findings and analyze the potential correlations. Material and Methods: A total of 1226 cases of MSFB were divided into 2 groups according to ostiomeatal complex obstruction on computed tomography. The potential correl

[Intracranial complications of sinusitis in patients of the otolaryngology Department of the regional hospital in Olsztyn treated between 2004-2007].

Sinusitis is common disease. However intracranial complications of sinusitis are rare, but they are still a serious problem that results in high mortality. Diagnostic advantages of CT scanning and magnetic resonance imaging as well as therapeutic advantages of FESS prevent spread of complications. Patients with intracranial complications require surgery to remove the focus of infection from the sinuses and neurosurgical drain the abscess in some cases, with intensive antibiotic therapy. We presented three cases of intracranial complications treated by endoscopic sinus surgery connected with ex

Complex Frontal Pneumosinus Dilatans Associated with Meningioma: A Report of Two Cases and Associated Literature Review.

Introduction  Pneumosinus dilatans (PSD) is a rare phenomenon involving the expansion of the paranasal sinuses, without bony destruction or a mass. Previously documented cases have demonstrated simple expansion of a solitary air cell. We present two unique cases of PSD in the presence of meningioma, in which complex new cells developed within the frontal sinus. One of the two patients developed associated sinus disease. Case 1  A 28-year-old man presented with facial pain. A computed tomography scan showed an abnormally enlarged, septated right frontal sinus, not present on childhood scans. He

Single stage management of complex fronto-orbital mucoceles.

Mucoceles arising in the frontal and/or ethmoid sinuses are clinically silent and often involve both the orbit and the anterior cranial fossa extensively. Five patients with advanced mucoceles of the frontal sinus involving the orbitocranial skeleton (OCM), as a result of recurrent sinusitis or trauma, were identified during a 36-month period in a major academic US institution. The range of pathology encountered involved brain herniations, CSF leaks, and extensive orbital involvement. These patients required major reconstructive efforts to restore proper orbital skeletal anatomy and function w

Obliteration of the frontal sinus cavity with bioactive glass.

BACKGROUND: Bioactive glass (BG) is a glass ceramic material. It has been used as surgical bone replacement material in ear and oral surgery, orthopedics, and dentistry. METHODS: Bioactive glass was used as obliteration material in a series of osteoplastic frontal sinus operations on 10 patients suffering from chronic frontal sinusitis, which other, more-conservative treatment modalities had failed to cure. RESULTS: Bioactive glass is easy to handle, and complete obliteration of all sinusal recesses and excavations is easily achieved. No adverse effects of the implant material have been seen…

Semi-Automated Segmentation on Computed Tomography Datasets for Three-Dimensional Reconstruction and Volumetric Analysis of the Paranasal Sinuses in Alpacas (Vicugna pacos) and Their Anatomical Variations.

Understanding the anatomy of alpaca (Vicugna pacos) paranasal sinuses is essential for accurate interpretation of diagnostic imaging and surgical planning, especially given the species' susceptibility to dental disease and associated sinusitis. However, detailed anatomical and volumetric data on alpaca sinuses remain limited. This study aimed to characterise the volumetric properties and anatomical composition of the paranasal sinuses in alpacas using semi-automated segmentation of computed tomography datasets, with the goal of supporting clinical practice in veterinary medicine. Seven adult a

Morphometric examination of the paranasal sinuses and mastoid air cells using computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: The paranasal sinuses and mastoid air cells vary considerably in size and shape from person to person. The main structures are pneumatic. In this study, we investigated the relationship between right and left sides and evaluated the volume changes according to age and sex. METHODS: Of all patients attending the radiology department, 91 cases without paranasal sinuses and mastoid air cells pathology (i.e., inflammation, operation or trauma) were selected for evaluation. Axial computed tomography (CT) scans were obtained for both paranasal sinuses and temporal bones. In all scans, t

Beyond the Sinus: Unmasking Pott's Puffy Tumor Through Imaging.

Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is a rare yet severe complication of frontal sinusitis, characterized by localized forehead swelling resulting from osteomyelitis and subperiosteal abscess formation. This case report discusses a 15-year-old male patient who initially presented with upper respiratory tract symptoms. These progressed to seizures, leading to the identification of extensive sinusitis and significant intra-cranial complications. The case emphasizes the benefits of integrating multiple imaging modalities to improve diagnoses and patient care. Imaging findings facilitated early diagnosis and…

133Xenon washout in the paranasal sinuses--a diagnostic tool for assessing ostial function.

A 133Xenon washout test is presented and interpreted. It was developed on the basis of studies into the accumulation of aerosols of different makes (lithium chloride in the form of ultrasonic, vibratory and pressurized aerosols) in the paranasal sinuses and sequential scintigraphy with radioactively labeled aerosols (99m Technetium colloidal sulfur) and is designed to shed light on the gas exchange in the paranasal sinuses and the patency of their orifices. The test constitutes a valuable addition to the battery of diagnostic tools for assessing paranasal sinus function and, at the same time,
