Sequential emergence and quantitative dynamics of key bacterial species preceding digital dermatitis lesion onset in dairy cattle.

Digital dermatitis (DD) is a skin infection of cattle's feet with multiple bacteria suspected to be involved, yet its precise etiopathogenesis remains unclear. This longitudinal study explored the temporal changes of seven DD-associated bacteria in feet developing lesions or remaining healthy, while simultaneously investigating their persistence in potential reservoirs as sources of infection. Weekly swabs were collected from feet skin and saliva of 53 Holstein cows without DD lesions sequentially enrolled at calving in a commercial dairy herd. At the end of the study, samples from all cases a

Association between dysbiotic perio-pathogens and inflammatory initiators and mediators in COVID-19 patients with diabetes.

It has been suggested that a corona virus infection is linked to chronic periodontitis (COVID-19). Our objectives were to look at the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) in periodontal compartments containing periodontal infections to determine if ACE2 is directly or indirectly responsible for the inflammation in periodontal tissues getting worse. In this study, six non-COVID-19 periodontitis patients without diabetes served as controls, and 23 hospitalized periodontitis patients were admitted with PCR-confirmed COVID-19 with diabetes mellitus (Group 1/G1, n = 10), and without

Characteristics of the salivary microbiota in cheilitis granulomatosa.

BACKGROUND: Cheilitis granulomatosa (CG) is a disturbing and persistent idiopathic lip swelling. The cause and treatment has not been wholly elucidated. Some reports infer that CG is mainly associated with dental infection but no firm or reliable microbiological evidence has been provided for a causative organism. This study aimed to evaluate whether microorganisms contribute to the etiology of CG in order to inform appropriate treatment op tions in clinic. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Unstimulated saliva was collected from 15 CG patients who were diagnosed clinically and pathologically and 15 healt

Tongue piercing: the effect of material on microbiological findings.

PURPOSE: Biofilms on oral piercings may serve as a bacterial reservoir and lead to systemic bacteremia or local transmission of pathogenic microbiota. The use of piercing materials which are less susceptible to biofilm accumulation could contribute to prevention of problems. The present study investigated whether there are microbiological differences in bacterial samples collected from tongue piercings made of different materials. METHODS: A total of 85 subjects with tongue piercings participated in this study. After a baseline dental examination, sterile piercings of four different materials

Bioinspired nano-micron hydrogel microspheres for periodontitis therapy through synergistic multi-targeted remodeling of microenvironment.

Background: Periodontitis is a prevalent oral inflammatory disease that leads to alveolar bone resorption and tooth loss. It is hard to control and prone to recurrence. Current treatments often fall short due to deep, tortuous periodontal pockets and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum). Notably, current clinical therapies fail to simultaneously fulfill three critical objectives: robust antimicrobial efficacy, potent anti-inflammatory activity, and effective periodontal regenerative capacity. Methods: Inspired by the structure of the lotus flower, nano/

Microbial Proteins in Stomach Biopsies Associated with Gastritis, Ulcer, and Gastric Cancer.

(1) Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Helicobacter pylori infection is a major risk factor, but other microbial species may also be involved. In the context of an earlier proteomics study of serum and biopsies of patients with gastroduodenal diseases, we explored here a simplified microbiome in these biopsies (H. pylori, Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Bacteroides fragilis) on the protein level. (2) Methods: A cohort of 75 patients was divided into groups with respect to the findings of the normal

An Exploration of Oral-Gut Pathogens Mediating Immune Escape of Pancreatic Cancer via miR-21/PTEN Axis.

Oral-gut pathogens are closely associated with pancreatic cancer, such as Campylobacter jejuni, Clostridium difficile, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Helicobacter pylori, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Vibrio cholera, but the related mechanisms remain not well understood. Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN, a widely known tumor suppressor) play a key role in the anti-cancer immune system. Pancreatic cancer cells with PTEN loss are often in the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment regulated by myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), regulatory T cells (

Spreading or Gathering? Can Traditional Knowledge be a Resource to Tackle Reindeer Diseases Associated with Climate Change?

This paper inquires whether reindeer herders' traditional knowledge (TK) provides a reservoir of precaution and adaptation possibilities that may be relevant to counteract climate change. As our core example, we used the milking of reindeer-which, in some areas, was practiced up until the 1950s-1960s-and the risk of getting foot rot disease (digital necrobacillosis; slubbo in North Sámi), caused by the bacterium Fusobacterium necrophorum. Via wounds or scratches, the bacterium creates an infection that makes the infected limb swell and, eventually, necrotize. The disease is often mortal in its

[A case of corticosteroid-responsive Lemierre syndrome with clivus osteomyelitis and a mass in the cavernous sinus-suprasellar region].

Lemierre syndrome is a clinical syndrome that presents with internal jugular thrombophlebitis, septicemia and systemic abscess formations. In general, the condition is preceded by oropharyngeal infections. We report a case of a 73-year-old man with Lemierre syndrome, clivus osteomyelitis and a steroid-responsive mass in the cavernous sinus-suprasellar region. He complained of fever, occipital pain, diplopia and right ptosis. Administration of oral steroids ameliorated the ophthalmic symptoms for a period before he was admitted to our hospital. After admission, the severity of his headache adva

Anaerobic bacteria in pediatric infections.

Anaerobic bacteria normally outnumber aerobic bacteria in the oral cavity and the gastrointestinal tract. They have been isolated from pediatric patients with various diseases. Anaerobic bacteria have been shown to colonize newborns immediately after delivery. These organisms are associated with cellulitis at the site of fetal monitoring, neonatal aspiration pneumonia bacteremia, conjunctivitis and omphalitis. Clostridial spores have been found in cases of necrotizing enterocolitis. Botulism of the newborn has been reported.

Alteration of subgingival microbiome in patients with type 2 diabetes induced by diabetes treatment.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Diabetes and periodontal disease, a bacterial infection involving the oral microbiome, have a bidirectional relationship. However, the relationship between poor glycemic control and the oral microbiome remains unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the direct effect of intensive glycemic control on the oral microbiome in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with T2DM and 29 controls were enrolled in this study. Patients underwent a 2-week intensive glycemic control regimen. We collected subgingival dental plaque an

Orally Deliverable Engineered Porphyrin Nanohybrids Activate the cGAS-STING Axis and Enable Fusobacterium-Specific Targeting for Robust Immune Remodeling and Colorectal Cancer Regression.

The susceptibility of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells to Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) infection pose significant challenges to CRC treatment and prevention. This study addresses these challenges by mobilizing cGAS/STING axis activation and F. nucleatum-specific targeting, thereby achieving a multimodal treatment strategy for reversing the immunosuppressive microenvironment (ITM) and achieving targeted anti-F. nucleatum therapy. Specifically, a hybrid nanoplatform CuPpIX@HM was engineered using Escherichia coli and tumor cell membranes encapsulating ultrasound (US) stimulation-responsiv

Lemierre syndrome: Current evidence and rationale of the Bacteria-Associated Thrombosis, Thrombophlebitis and LEmierre syndrome (BATTLE) registry.

Lemierre syndrome is a rare but potentially fatal condition characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the head and neck district, preferentially affecting adolescents and young adults and manifesting as a complication of a local bacterial infection - typically, a pharyngotonsillitis or an abscess. It is historically associated with the Gram-negative anaerobic rod Fusobacterium necrophorum and with thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. However, its definition has never been firmly established, and its spectrum within the continuum of bacteria-associated thrombophlebitis may be larger
