A comparison of social drivers of health identification and intervention rates by sex among patients receiving primary care.

BACKGROUND: Social drivers of health (SDOH) significantly influence health behaviors and outcomes, yet sex-based disparities in these domains remain underexplored. Identifying these differences is essential for guiding equitable, evidence-based interventions. METHODS: We analyzed electronic health record (EHR) data from all patients with a documented male or female sex who had a primary care visit or inpatient stay at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2024 (n = 493,920). SDOH screening responses were categorized as "affirmative" (at risk

Comparison of HIV-related vulnerabilities between former child soldiers and children never abducted by the LRA in northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Thousands of former child soldiers who were abducted during the prolonged conflict in northern Uganda have returned to their home communities. Programmes that facilitate their successful reintegration continue to face a number of challenges. Although there is increasing knowledge of the dynamics of HIV infection during conflict, far less is known about its prevalence and implications for population health in the post-conflict period. This study investigated the effects of abduction on the prevalence of HIV and HIV-risk behaviours among young people in Gulu District, northern Uganda

Technology-based and digital interventions for intimate partner violence: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research shows the promise and efficacy of technology-based or digital interventions in improving the health and well-being of survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). In addition, mental health comorbidities such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression occur three to five times more frequently in survivors of IPV than non-survivors, making these comorbidities prominent targets of technology-based interventions. Still, research on the long-term effectiveness of these interventions in reducing IPV victimization and adverse mental heal

Behavioural and environmental influences on adolescent decision making in personal relationships: a qualitative multi-stakeholder exploration in Panama.

Adolescents in Panama face multiple challenges to their sexual health, rights and well-being such as high rates of teenage pregnancy (∼30% of all pregnancies), increased HIV infections and sexual violence. In the absence of sufficient evidence-based data and an ongoing debate in Panamanian society about how to approach adolescents' health problems, the aim of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions and attitudes of different societal actors, namely governmental employees, NGO employees, academics, members from religious groups, teachers and parents. We conducted in-depth intervie

Innovative curriculum: Integrating the bio-behavioral and social science principles across the LifeStages in basic science years.

Behavioral and social science integration in clinical practice improves health outcomes across the life stages. The medical school curriculum requires an integration of the behavioral and social science principles in early medical education. We developed and delivered a four-week course entitled "LifeStages" to the first year medical students. The learning objectives of the bio-behavioral and social science principles along with the cultural, economic, political, and ethical parameters were integrated across the lifespan in the curriculum matrix. We focused on the following major domains: Grow

A randomized controlled trial of a transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral intervention for Afro-descendants' survivors of systemic violence in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to violence has negative consequences on mental health. Armed-conflict in Colombia has widely affected Afro-descendants in the Pacific region. Evidence regarding effectiveness of mental health interventions is lacking in low-income settings, especially in areas with active conflict. The objective of this study is to evaluate an individualized Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA), a transdiagnostic psychotherapy model based on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, for adult trauma survivors. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A referred sample of 521 adult Afro-descendants from Buenaventu

Assessing risk of commercial sexual exploitation among children involved in the child welfare system.

The objective of this study was to assess item characteristics indicative of the severity of risk for commercial sexual exploitation among a high-risk population of child welfare system involved youth to inform the construction of a screening tool. Existing studies have discerned factors that differentiate Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) victims from sexual abuse victims, yet no research has been conducted to discriminate which items in a high risk population of youth are most predictive of CSEC. Using the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW) cohorts I a

Women Who Use or Inject Drugs: An Action Agenda for Women-Specific, Multilevel, and Combination HIV Prevention and Research.

Women account for more than half of all individuals living with HIV globally. Despite increasing drug and HIV epidemics among women, women who use drugs are rarely found in research, harm reduction programs, or drug and HIV treatment and care. Women who use drugs continue to face challenges that increase their vulnerability to HIV and other comorbidities because of high rates of gender-based violence, human rights violations, incarceration, and institutional and societal stigmatization. This special issue emphasizes how the burdens of HIV, drug use, and their co-occurring epidemics affect wome…

Youths carrying a weapon or using a weapon in a fight: what makes the difference?

The objective of this study was to characterize weapon-carrying adolescents and to assess whether weapon carriers differ from weapon users. Data were drawn from a cross-sectional school-based survey of 7548 adolescents aged 16-20 years in Switzerland. Youths carrying a weapon were compared with those who do not. Subsequently, weapon carriers were divided into those who had used it in a fight and those who had not. Individual, family, school and social factors were analyzed using bivariate and stepwise multivariate analysis. For both genders, delinquent behavior and being victim of physical vio

Peer victimization during early adolescence: an injury trigger, an injury mechanism and a frequent exposure in school.

UNLABELLED: There is a documented effect of peer victimization in school as an injury trigger, but the question of differences between children according to age and sex remains unexplored. Nor do we know the role played by school peer victimization as a direct injury mechanism. OBJECTIVE: The study considered age and sex differences with regard to peer victimization's triggering effect on physical injury, its direct relation to injury (i.e. physical violence), and its age- and gender-specific frequency and manner of occurrence. METHOD: Data were gathered through structured interviews with ch

Exploring the effects of COVID-19 on family planning: results from a qualitative study in rural Uganda following COVID-19 lockdown.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has likely affected the already high unmet need for family planning in low- and middle-income countries. This qualitative study used Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Service Use as a theoretical framework to explore the possible ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic, including the impact of a 3-month government mandated lockdown, might affect family planning outcomes in rural Uganda. A secondary aim was to elicit recommendations to improve family planning service delivery in the context of COVID-19. METHODS: Between June and October 2020, we conducted four

Association of the COVID-19 lockdown and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) in Korean adolescents.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a worldwide pandemic that causes anxiety. Research on possible risk factors for anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic is scarce. In this study, we examined 54,890 participants' web-based self-reported data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey in 2020. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 questionnaire was used to measure anxiety levels. The prevalence of anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 score ≥ 10) was 11.2%. Anxiety in adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic was significantly associated with female gender (odds ratio [OR] = 1.29, 95%

Trauma Exposure and PTSD Among Women Receiving Treatment for Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration.

Trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms have been associated with men's perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV), but relatively little research has examined these associations among women who perpetrate IPV. This exploratory investigation evaluated the associations among trauma, PTSD symptoms, and IPV perpetration for women and a comparison sample of men. During intake at a community-based Abuse Intervention Program (AIP), women (n = 32) and a demographically similar comparison sample of men (n = 64) completed measures of trauma exposure, PTSD symptoms, physic
