A crucial factor in promoting a vigorous quality of life in the aging population is assessment and treatment of cognitive deficits. A very high percentage of delirium and at least 20% of dementia is eminently treatable. This study of patients over 65 years of age admitted to a university general hospital reveals that 79% of cognitive deficits were missed by the examining physicians. Furthermore, in 394 examinations of 165 patients, only four mental status examinations were recorded. A clear-cut cognitive deficit on admission was predictive of later acute episodes of confusion. The global techn

This study is a survey of psychotropic drug use patterns among 934 elderly patients admitted to the Padua Geriatric Hospital. 34% of the patients took psychotropic drugs during their stay in hospital. The drugs most commonly used are anxiolytics and hypnotics of the benzodiazepine class. Women subjects living alone, and to a lesser extent those suffering from particular disorders, as of the central nervous system and the musculoskeletal apparatus, seem to be at higher risk in the use of psychotropic drugs. Moreover, the results show that psychotropic drugs are prescribed during the stay in hos

Fifty-two patients previously treated and discharged from an acute-care general hospital ward were followed up for an average of 30.5 months. The results show that while it is true that depressive episodes in the elderly are often easily and rapidly treated, many of these patients do poorly in the long term for a variety of reasons related to depressive dysphoria, organic brain syndrome, and physical disability. Depressive or dysphoric relapse in the community seems to go largely unrecognized. It is suggested that follow-up must be done soon after discharge to prevent the high level of rejecti

An outbreak of infection due to Streptococcus pyogenes occurred in a geriatric rehabilitation unit between February and September 1981, affecting 10 patients and two staff. The severity of the illness ranged from asymptomatic throat carriage, through skin and soft-tissue sepsis, to fulminant septicaemia and necrotising fasciitis: two patients died of their infection. Streptococcus pyogenes infection may present in a variety of ways, and may be dangerous. Recently developed serological tests have been found useful in the surveillance of an outbreak. Although Streptococcus pyogenes is sensitive

The safety and efficacy of 0.25 mg triazolam were compared to those of 15 mg flurazepam and placebo in 41 geriatric outpatients suffering from insomnia. The patients were randomly assigned to one of the three treatment groups. The medication was taken at bedtime for 28 days. Tolerance development was also studied. Triazolam was found to be significantly better than placebo in how much the medication helped the patients sleep, in sleep onset, in duration of sleep, number of nighttime awakenings, in quality (depth) of sleep, and in feeling of restfulness in the morning. Triazolam was significant

INTRODUCTION: Delays to surgery confer increased morbidity and mortality in elderly patients who have sustained hip fractures. Preoperative investigations including transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) are often requested. The aim of this study was to determine whether there were delays to surgery when these patients underwent preoperative TTE.
METHODS: Electronic databases were searched from inception until April 2025. All relevant studies were identified with data extracted and meta-analysed.
FINDINGS: A total cohort of 2,581 patients was extracted from 5 studies; 865 (34%) patients receiv

BACKGROUND: Aging populations require physicians skilled in competencies essential for the care of older adults. The extent to which such geriatric competencies are included in non-geriatric postgraduate medical training programs is not known. Therefore this study examined the inclusion of 13 geriatric competencies in postgraduate training programs in Australia and New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
METHODS: Thirteen core geriatric competencies were identified and defined: aging physiology; health equity and sociodemography in aging; geriatric assessment and management; i

BACKGROUND: As global population aging accelerates, infectious diseases in older adults have emerged as a growing public health burden with substantial clinical, economic, and societal implications. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) offers a transformative opportunity to enhance the management of infections in this vulnerable population.
METHODS: This review delineates key determinants specific to geriatrics that influence infection susceptibility and atypical presentation, including age-related organ dysfunction, immunosenescence, inflammaging, chronic comorbidities, and …

OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study investigated the association between periodontal status and geriatric health parameters, a relationship that has received little attention in research to date.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The periodontal health of 51 geriatric patients was assessed based on probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP) and approximal plaque index (API). General health was evaluated using the Tinetti Test, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), handgrip strength test and the Barthel Index. Oral hygiene habits were evaluated using a struc

OBJECTIVE: To explore psychiatry residents' experiences, challenges, and perceived educational gaps in managing polypharmacy among older adults within a large academic hospital setting.
METHODS: Using a qualitative descriptive approach, we synthesized recurring themes and insights emerging from longitudinal clinical reflections, supervision discussions, and interdisciplinary educational forums conducted over a 12-month academic year, including monthly group supervision sessions and weekly faculty supervision during routine clinical rotations. Additional perspectives were informed by interdisc

INTRODUCTION: Global ageing populations require accessible, non-invasive tools for early detection and monitoring of neurological chronic and neurodegenerative diseases. Current diagnostic methods face limitations including invasiveness, high costs and infrequent clinical assessments. The human voice has emerged as a promising digital biomarker, with vocal characteristics reflecting physiological and cognitive changes associated with conditions like dementia and Parkinson's disease. While artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have enabled sophisticated vocal analysis, the literatur
