On May 12, an unprecedented earthquake struck Wenchuan County, Sichuan, China, and 1823 victims were admitted to West China Hospital, Sichuan, China. A total of 464 nonduplicate clinical isolates from wounds of earthquake victims were analyzed. The results show that the most common pathogen was Staphylococcus aureus, but only 24.4% of the total isolates were Gram-positive bacteria, and 73.2% were Gram-negative bacteria. The isolates were significantly different from isolation pattern of 2004 tsunami in Thailand. The isolation rates of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producer and pandrug-resis…

Bacterial resistance to multiple drugs is a worldwide problem that afflicts public health. Various studies have shown that silver nanoparticles are good bactericidal agents against bacteria due to the adherence and penetration of the external bacterial membrane, preventing different vital functions and subsequently bacterial cell death. A systematic review of ScienceDirect, PubMed, and EBSCOhost was conducted to synthesize the literature evidence on the association between the bactericidal property of silver nanoparticles on both resistant Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Eligible stu…

BACKGROUND: Amino acid dehydrogenases (L-amino acid: oxidoreductase deaminating; EC 1.4.1.X) are members of the wider superfamily of oxidoreductases that catalyze the reversible oxidative deamination of an amino acid to its keto acid and ammonia with the concomitant reduction of either NAD+, NADP+ or FAD. These enzymes have been received much attention as biocatalysts for use in biosensors or diagnostic kits to screen amino acid metabolism disorders such as phenylketonuria (PKU), maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), homocystinuria (HCY) and hyperprolinemia. This study was aimed to isolation and s

It is estimated that more than 500 different bacterial species colonize the human gut, and they are collectively known as the gut microbiota. Such a massive bacterial presence is now considered an additional organ of the human body, thus becoming the object of an intense and daily growing research activity. Gram-negative bacteria represent a large percentage of the gut microbiota strains. The main constituent of the outer membrane of Gram-negatives is the lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Since its first discovery, LPS has been extensively studied for its structure-dependent capability to elicit a pot…

BACKGROUND: High morbidity and mortality due to carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (CR-GNB) has led to the resurgence of polymyxin B (PMB) use in the last decade. The aim of our multicenter, real-world study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of PMB in the treatment of CR-GNB infections.
METHODS: The real-world study included patients treated with intravenous PMB for at least 7 days during the period of October 2018 through June 2019. Associations between these clinical features and 28-day mortality or all-cause hospital mortality were explored through univariate analyses an

The in vitro activity of cefpiramide, a new ureido cephalosporin antibiotic, was determined against 1128 gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria selected for resistance to ampicillin and cefazolin. Cefpiramide was less active on a milligram basis than cefotaxime, ceftazidime, moxalactam, and aztreonam against all of the members of the Enterobacteriaceae. Cefpiramide inhibited many Pseudomonas aeruginosa resistant to carbenicillin, piperacillin, and cefotaxime, but it was less active than ceftazidime and cefsulodin. Cefpiramide inhibited staphylococci and streptococci and

Swabs of conjunctiva were collected from 44 live and 226 hunter-harvested mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Wyoming and Utah (USA). We identified 29 gram negative and 22 gram positive bacterial taxonomic categories, but many isolates from hunter-harvested animals were environmental contaminants. Staphylococcus spp. and Micrococcus spp. were the most common gram positive bacteria isolated, and Enterobacter spp., Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas spp. were common gram negative bacteria isolated. Thelazia californiensis were found in 15% of hunter-harvested deer in Utah in 1994 and in 8% in 19

Non-thermal plasma (NTP) is a promising antimicrobial approach with potential applications in microbial decontamination and infection control. This study evaluated the antimicrobial effects of NTP against bacteria and yeast, comparing two microbial enumeration methods used after plasma exposure. A portable point-to-ring bipolar corona discharge source (7 kV, 150 μA, 3.3 mm gap) was employed to compare drop plate (DP) and spread plate (SP) methods following a maximum exposure time of 600 s across six microorganisms. Subsequently, the time-dependent antimicrobial effects of NTP were assessed at

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a critical and escalating global health challenge that extends beyond classical genetic mechanisms of resistance acquisition. Increasing evidence highlights extracellular vesicles (EVs) as key mediators of bacterial adaptation, intercellular communication, and resistance dissemination. Among these, bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) play a central role by transporting diverse cargo, including antibiotic resistance genes, mobile genetic elements, antibiotic inactivating enzymes, and immunomodulatory factors. By facilitating horizontal gene transfer

Ciprofloxacin (CPX), a second generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, is used as a primary antibiotic for treatment against gastroenteritis, drug-resistant tuberculosis, and malignant otitis externa. CPX is a broad spectrum antibiotic that targets the DNA gyrase of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Irrational and improper usage of CPX results in emergence of CPX resistant organisms emphasizing the importance of using lethal doses of CPX. Here, we have systematically analysed the effect of CPX at sub lethal concentrations on live E. coli membrane and growth dynamics. As a result of …
