GLUT-1: an extra diagnostic tool to differentiate between haemangiomas and vascular malformations.

The differential diagnosis between juvenile haemangiomas, vascular malformations, pyogenic granulomas and normally proliferative endothelium (granulation tissue) on the basis of histology alone is sometimes difficult. This is important because haemangiomas, are self-limiting and vascular malformations are not. We report our experience of using the immunohistochemical marker GLUT-1 to distinguish haemangiomas from vascular malformations following the initial report by North and Colleagues (1998). We studied a total of 50 specimens from patients with vascular anomalies, and found that GLUT-1 rea

Unique Application of Cryocone to Diagnose Umbilical Pilonidal Cyst.

Patients with umbilical disorders who present with complaints of a mass, pain, tenderness or discharge will typically have a differential diagnosis including umbilical hernias, pyogenic granuloma, endometriosis, Sister Mary Joseph nodule and urachal or epidermoid cysts. We would add the inclusion of pilonidal sinus disease and present the case of a patient with an umbilical pilonidal cyst. The use of a cryocone with lubricating jelly, in this case, proved to be an easy and convenient method that aided in visualization and diagnosis of this fairly uncommon condition.

CT findings in two cases of lobular capillary haemangioma of the nasal cavity: focusing on the enhancement pattern.

Lobular capillary haemangioma, known as pyogenic granuloma, is a relatively common benign vascular neoplasm that is composed of hyperplastic clusters of capillaries arranged in a lobular architectural pattern. Most mucosal lobular capillary haemangioma (LCH) of the head and neck arise in the oral cavity, but the nasal cavity involvement is rare. We report here on the CT imaging findings of two cases of LCH involving the nasal cavity, with an emphasis being placed on the different pattern of enhancement of the tumour on the enhanced CT scans.

Histiocytoid endothelial cells in a malignant schwannoma.

Unusual vascular lining cells within a malignant schwannoma prompted a comparative study of these cells and the endothelial cells in cases of histiocytoid hemangiomas. The endothelial cells in all cases showed similar morphologic and immunohistochemical features. Such endothelial cells were not found in the capillaries of a pyogenic granuloma or in those of developing rat skin. It is postulated that these distinctive endothelial cells may be more widely distributed than was previously thought and that morphologic changes associated with these cells may be induced by vasoactive substances.

Peripheral ossifying fibroma: A case report.

Localized gingival growths are one of the most frequently encountered lesions in the oral cavity, which are considered to be reactive rather than neoplastic. Different lesions with similar clinical presentation make it difficult to arrive at a correct diagnosis. These lesions include pyogenic granuloma, irritation fibroma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF). Among these lesions, an infrequently occurring gingival lesion is the POF. Considerable confusion has prevailed in the nomenclature of POF due to its variable histopathologic features. This is a case presen

Survey of reactive hyperplastic lesions of the oral cavity in mashhad, northeast iran.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Reactive hyperplasias (RHs) are common oral mucosal lesions caused by irritation of the mu-cosa. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequencies of various types of oral RHs in a university clinic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Oral RH cases, undergone biopsy in a four-year period, were studied retrospectively. Data including age and gender as well as the location and clinical characteristics of the lesion were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 123 cases (age range 7-79 years old; mean: 38.8 ± 18.50 years; male: female ratio, 1.9:1) were evalu-ated. Over a half

Quantification of inflammatory, angiogenic, and fibrous components of reactive oral lesions with an insight into the pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Reactive oral lesions pose diagnostic difficulties as they mimic each other clinically. A definitive diagnosis is made based on the histopathological presentation of this group of lesion. Stromal microenvironment is the key to the sequence of the stages of these lesions. Stringent quantification of each component of the stroma is important to understand the pathogenesis. The aim is to evaluate inflammation, angiogenesis, and fibrosis in the reactive group of lesions through quantitative analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blocks of irritation fibroma, inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia

Clinico-pathological correlation of lacrimal caruncle tumors: a retrospective analysis over 22 years at the University Eye Hospital Bonn.

PURPOSE: The lacrimal caruncle is composed of numerous structures including different glands as well as hair follicles. Accordingly, the spectrum of benign and malignant lesions is broad, and the clinical diagnosis is often challenging. Here we systematically analyzed excised caruncular tumors over the past 22 years with special emphasis on the clinico-pathological correlation to provide a guidance for clinicians. METHODS: Retrospective evaluation with clinico-pathologic correlation of surgically removed caruncular tumors between 1998 and 2020 at a tertiary referral center. RESULTS: Eighty-t

Incidence of reactive hyperplastic lesions in the oral cavity: a 10 year retrospective study in Santa Catarina, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Reactive hyperplastic lesions develop in response to a chronic injury simulating an exuberant tissue repair response. They represent some of the most common oral lesions including inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, oral pyogenic granuloma, giant cell fibroma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, and peripheral giant cell lesions. OBJECTIVE: The incidence of those lesions was investigated in an oral pathology service, and the clinical characteristics, associated etiological factors, concordance between the clinical and histopathological diagnostic was determined. METHODS: A total of 240

[Solitary fibrous hemangiopericytoma of atypical location: importance of immunohistochemical study].

BACKGROUND: The rare cutaneous solitary fibrous tumor was initially described in the thoracic cavity in relation to the pleura and subsequently been associated with other serous membranes. It has been described in other extraserosal locations including the skin. Knowledge of its existence along with fairly typical histological features and the immunohistochemical expression pattern with intense positivity for CD34 allow the increasing diagnosis of this condition, which suggests that these cases were not previously diagnosed as such. CLINICAL CASE: We report the case of a 43 year-old male with

Expression of follicle-stimulating hormone receptor in vascular anomalies.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism for the growth of infantile hemangioma and vascular malformations is unknown. Follicle-stimulating hormone secretion mirrors the life cycle of infantile hemangioma and increases during adolescence, when vascular malformations often progress. The purpose of this study was to determine whether vascular anomalies express the receptor for follicle-stimulating hormone. METHODS: Human vascular tumors (i.e., infantile hemangioma, congenital hemangioma, kaposiform hemangioendothelioma, and pyogenic granuloma) and vascular malformations (i.e., capillary, lymphatic, venous, an

Successful management of recurrent irritational fibroma and associated residual soft tissue defect in the posterior teeth through single-stage surgery: A rare case report.

Inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, pyogenic granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, irritational fibroma (IF), peripheral giant cell granuloma, etc., are the different types of reactive gingival lesions that may occur in response to mild chronic irritation associated with subgingival factors, root remnant, iatrogenic factors, and trauma. Gingival IF is one of the most common reactive lesions and is usually sessile in nature, and its size is usually not more than 1.5 cm. Complete surgical excision along with the elimination of precipitating/aggravating factors is the treatment of choice general

Diode laser-assisted management of intraoral soft tissue overgrowth: a case series.

The conventional method of managing intraoral soft tissue overgrowth involves surgical excision using a scalpel under local anesthesia. These procedures are often associated with excessive bleeding that leads to complications. Now, minimally invasive methods such as laser excision are available for the management of intraoral soft tissue lesions. The objective of the present case series is to describe the use of a 980-nm diode laser to treat 4 cases of soft tissue enlargement of the oral cavity. Two women and 2 men with an age range of 21-73 years presented with chief complaints of intraoral s

C5a receptor and interleukin-6 are expressed in tissue macrophages and stimulated keratinocytes but not in pulmonary and intestinal epithelial cells.

The anaphylatoxin derived from the fifth component of the human complement system (C5a) mediates its effects by binding to a single high-affinity receptor (C5aR/CD88), the expression of which has been traditionally thought to be restricted to granulocytes, monocytes, macrophages (Mphi), and cell lines of myeloid origin. Recent immunohistochemical data suggested that human bronchial and alveolar cells express C5aR as well. To reexamine the tissue distribution of human C5aR expression, transcription of the C5aR gene was investigated in normal and pathologically affected human lung (bronchopneumo

Surgical Management of Vascular Anomalies.

Surgical management of vascular anomalies depends on the type of lesion, location, symptoms, and consideration of other treatment options. A correct diagnosis must be confirmed before choosing management. Complete resection of a vascular anomaly rarely is required. Operative intervention should not cause a worse deformity than the lesion. Vascular anomalies primarily managed operatively include pyogenic granuloma, congenital hemangioma, and arteriovenous malformation. Resection of infantile hemangioma, kaposiform hemangioendothelioma, capillary malformation, lymphatic malformation, and venous

Rare airway tumor in a previously healthy adolescent successfully treated with endoscopic resection and oral propranolol.

Airway tumors are rare in children. Pyogenic granuloma (PG), also known as lobular capillary hemangioma, is a benign vascular tumor usually found on the skin or in the oral cavity. Rarely, these lesions occur in the airway and cause significant hemoptysis. Most reported airway PGs have occurred in the trachea of adults. Here, we present a case of an adolescent female who presented with hemoptysis and was found to have a PG in the right lower lobe. Per institutional guidelines, this case report was exempt from institutional review board approval.

A rare cause of ankle pain: concomitant intravenous lobular capillary haemangioma and arteriovenous fistula.

Intravenous lobular capillary haemangioma (ILCH), also called intravenous pyogenic granuloma, is a rare benign lesion. These lesions are frequently showed themselves in the veins of the neck and upper extremities of young women. Clinical features are not specific. Ultrasonography can be used for diagnosis and showing additional pathologies such as arteriovenous fistula. The treatment is surgical excision. Correct pathologic diagnosis is required for differential diagnosis. We report an ILCH case presented to the Emergency Department with the complaints of pain and swelling in the ankle, origin
