Electroencephalogram-Based Metastability in Mild Cognitive Impairment Alzheimer's Disease.

Background: In this study, we analyze metastability, a feature of brain dynamics in subjects experiencing mild cognitive impairment Alzheimer's disease (MCI-AD) under eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC) conditions. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a critically prolonged brain disorder that interrupts neural synchronization and desynchronization. Thus, studying metastability under EO and EC conditions would help in understanding the cortical dynamics and its impact in early-stage AD. Methods: Metastability is investigated using three methods namely frequency variance analysis, Kuramoto order paramet

Solvent structure and dynamics over Brønsted acid MWW zeolite nanosheets.

In the liquid phase of heterogeneous catalysis, solvent plays an important role and governs the kinetics and thermodynamics of a reaction. Although it is often difficult to quantify the role of the solvent, it becomes particularly challenging when a zeolite is used as the catalyst. This difficulty arises from the complex nature of the liquid/zeolite interface and the different solvation environments around catalytically active sites. Here, we use ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to probe the local solvation structure and dynamics of methanol and water over MWW zeolite nanosheets with v

Computational and experimental studies on β-sheet breakers targeting Aβ1-40 fibrils.

In this work we present and compare the results of extensive molecular dynamics simulations of model systems comprising an Aβ1-40 peptide in water in interaction with short peptides (β-sheet breakers) mimicking the 17-21 region of the Aβ1-40 sequence. Various systems differing in the customized β-sheet breaker structure have been studied. Specifically we have considered three kinds of β-sheet breakers, namely Ac-LPFFD-NH2 and two variants thereof, one obtained by substituting the acetyl group with the sulfonic amino acid taurine (Tau-LPFFD-NH2) and a second novel one in which the aspartic acid

Task Specificity of Dynamic Resistance Training and Its Transferability to Non-trained Isometric Muscle Strength: A Systematic Review with Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Resistance training (RT) specificity has been confirmed for movement patterns (e.g., multi-joint or single joint), movement velocities, ranges of motion, and contraction types (e.g., dynamic vs isometric). However, a systematic analysis of the effects of dynamic mass-loaded (e.g., isoinertial) RT on dynamic versus isometric strength tests is lacking. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the specific effects of dynamic RT on dynamic (isoinertial) versus isometric muscle strength, including possible moderating factors (e.g., training length, single joint and multi-joint, upper body and lo

Dynamic functional connectivity analysis reveals decreased variability of the default-mode network in developing autistic brain.

Accumulating neuroimaging evidence suggests that abnormal functional connectivity of the default mode network (DMN) contributes to the social-cognitive deficits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although most previous studies relied on conventional functional connectivity methods, which assume that connectivity patterns remain constant over time, understanding the temporal dynamics of functional connectivity during rest may provide new insights into the dysfunction of the DMN in ASD. In this work, dynamic functional connectivity analysis based on sliding time window correlation was applied to

Analysis of Ankle Mobility and Dynamic Valgus Knee in Runners With and Without Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal complaints among recreational runners, who commonly engage in various athletic activities. Thus, there is considerable discussion surrounding its risk factors, including dynamic knee valgus (DKV), as well as ankle dorsiflexion restriction (ADR) in a closed kinetic chain. To date, no scientific studies have investigated both ADR and DKV during the execution of the Step-Down Lateral Test (SDLT) in female runners with and without PFPS. OBJECTIVE: To measure ankle dorsiflexion mobility and determine dif

Elastic Dynamic Sling on Subluxation of Hemiplegic Shoulder in Patients with Subacute Stroke: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Shoulder subluxation occurs in 17−64% of hemiplegic patients after stroke and develops mostly during the first three weeks of hemiplegia. A range of shoulder orthoses has been used in rehabilitation to prevent subluxation. However, there is little evidence of their efficacy. AIM: This study aimed to investigate whether there is a difference in the subluxation distance, pain, and functional level of the hemiplegic upper extremity among patients with two different shoulder orthoses. Design: This is a prospective, randomized controlled trial with intention-to-treat analysis. SETTING:

An in vivo kinematic comparison of dynamic lumbar stabilization to lumbar discectomy and posterior lumbar fusion using radiostereometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Biomechanical studies have shown that dynamic stabilization restores the neutral zone and stabilizes the motion segment. Unfortunately, there are limitations to clinical measurement of lumbar motion segments when using routine radiographs. Radiostereometric analysis is a 3-dimensional technique and can measure the spinal motion segment more accurately than techniques using plain film radiographs. The purpose of this study was measure and compare the range of motion after dynamic stabilization, posterior lumbar fusion (PLF), and lumbar discectomy. METHODS: Four patients who underwe

Synthesis and Characterization of Rebondable Polyurethane Adhesives Relying on Thermo-Activated Transcarbamoylation.

Dynamic polymer networks combine the noteworthy (thermo)mechanical features of thermosets with the processability of thermoplastics. They rely on externally triggered bond exchange reactions, which induce topological rearrangements and, at a sufficiently high rate, a macroscopic reflow of the polymer network. Due to this controlled change in viscosity, dynamic polymers are repairable, malleable, and reprocessable. Herein, several dynamic polyurethane networks were synthetized as model compounds, which were able to undergo thermo-activated transcarbamoylation for the use in rebondable adhesives

Effect of Low-Frequency Vibration on Muscle Response under Different Neurointact Conditions.

Stretch reflex is an important factor that influences the biomechanical response of the human body under whole-body vibration. However, there is a lack of quantitative evaluation at lower frequencies. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of vibration on the stretch reflex and, in particular, to explore the quantitative relationship between dynamic muscle responses and low-frequency vibrations. The gastrocnemius muscle of 45 Sprague-Dawley rats was dissected. Sinusoidal vibrations of five discrete frequencies (2~16 Hz) with peak-to-peak amplitudes of 1 mm were applied to t
