We reviewed 85 patients with endocrine disorders and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). The disorders were hypothyroidism (40%), growth hormone deficiency (25%), and others (35%). The average age at diagnosis of the disorder was 13.2 +/- 6.2 years and 15.3 +/- 5.3 years at diagnosis of the first SCFE. In 53 hips, the bone and chronologic age were both known: 11.6 +/- 3.0 years bone age, 16.5 +/- 6.5 years chronologic age, p < 0.01. The age at presentation of the first SCFE ranged from 7-35 years; only those with hypothyroidism or growth hormone deficiency were < 10 years of age; all pat

BACKGROUND: We examined the relationships between -pregnancy disorders leading to very preterm birth -(spontaneous preterm labor, prelabor premature rupture of -membranes (PPROM), hypertension/preeclampsia, -intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), antenatal hemorrhage, and maternal -infection), both in isolation and grouped together as -"disorders of placentation" (hypertensive disorders and IUGR) vs. -"presumed infection/inflammation" (all the others), and several unfavorable neonatal outcomes.
METHODS: We examined a population-based prospective cohort of 2,085 singleton infants of 23-31 wk

OBJECTIVE: To examine mother and child's touch patterns in infant feeding disorders within a transactional framework.
METHOD: Infants (aged 9-34 months) referred to a community-based clinic were diagnosed with feeding disorders (n = 20) or other primary disorder (n = 27) and were case matched with nonreferred controls (n = 47). Mother-child play and feeding were observed and the home environment was assessed. Microcoding detected touch patterns, response to partner's touch, and proximity at play. Relational behaviors were coded during feeding.
RESULTS: Compared with infants with other primar

"Lymphangiomatosis" is a general term for excessive growth of aberrant lymphatic vessels. The impact of lymphangiomatosis can be devastating due to osteolysis and/or multi-organ involvement. The disorders are heterogeneous, and treatment is dependent upon disease location and symptoms. Most reports are single cases or small case series, predominantly in the orthopedic and radiologic literature. Basic research focused on lymphatic disorders may translate into new therapies for these disorders.

We often think of neurodevelopmental disorders as beginning before birth, and many certainly do. A handful, however, strike many months after birth, following a period of apparently normal growth and development. Autism and Rett syndrome are two such disorders, and here I consider some of their similarities at the phenotypic and pathogenic levels. I propose that both disorders result from disruption of postnatal or experience-dependent synaptic plasticity.

Methanolic crude extract of Scoparia dulcis (CESD) was orally administered to female mice during the early gestation (day 4-day 8) at a dose of 500 mg/kg/day. It induces embryo resorption and morphological changes of fetal maternal tissue. Histomorphology was studied by routine hematoxylin eosin stain. In situ immunofluorescence localization of IGF-II using Texas red showed an ordered expression of the growth factor in the maternal decidual cells, trophoblast cells and the embryo. Western blot analysis showed a gradual increase of IGF-II from D4 to D8 of control females. In contrast, the CESD-

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether gonadotropin releasing hormone analogue (GnRHa) combined with recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) can improve the adult height (AHt) of children with short stature and normal pubertal onset.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, GnRHa/rhGH treatment was given to children with normal pubertal onset and short stature. Patients were followed up to measure their AHt. The primary outcomes were the disparity between AHt standard deviation score (AHt SDS) and pre-treatment height standard deviation score (Ht SDS) and the disparity between AHt and target height (

Paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) is an acquired disorder of the haematopoietic stem cell that makes blood cells more sensitive to the action of complement. PNH patients experience an increased risk of arterial and venous thrombosis - major causes of death due to this disease. Though many potential interlaced mechanisms are suspected, extracellular vesicles (EVs) of various origins may play a central role. The processes possibly involved are haemolysis, platelet activation, injured endothelial cells and monocyte activation. The impact of transfusion should be evaluated. A better under

As a model of the growth hormone (GH) dependence of growth in prepuberty and puberty, the growth of 182 children (93 boys, 89 girls) who survived in first remission for treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia was examined. Chemotherapy regimens, including intrathecal methotrexate, were similar in all patients, but CNS treatment differed, in that one group received 2400 cGy cranial irradiation, while the other received 1800 cGy. There was a significant decrease in height SDS during prepuberty, which was equivalent in both sexes, whereas there was a much greater decrease in pubertal growth in

The primary clinical characteristic of shortness of stature due to endocrine deficiency is a slow rate of growth (less than 1.5 in., or 4 cm, each year). Dental and skeletal ages are delayed. Specific tests of thyroid and pituitary function must be done to document the deficiency. Replacement therapy with levothyroxine or human growth hormone, or both, should be given as indicated. Short children who do not have hormone deficiency grow about 1.5 in. (4 cm) each year but have normal skeletal and dental ages. Children with Turner syndrome, primordial or genetic short stature, or intrauterine gro

Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), one of the endocrine fibroblast growth factors, is a principal regulator in the maintenance of serum phosphorus concentration. Binding to its cofactor αKlotho and a fibroblast growth factor receptor is essential for its activity. Its regulation and interaction with other factors in the bone-parathyroid-kidney axis is complex. FGF23 reduces serum phosphorus concentration through decreased reabsorption of phosphorus in the kidney and by decreasing 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D) concentrations. Various FGF23-mediated disorders of renal phosphate wasting

INTRODUCTION: The description of obsessive symptoms associated with neurological diseases are in the basis of the neuroanatomical models of obsessive-compulsive disorder, with participation of basal ganglia and frontal lobes in its ethiopathogenesis. In the last years, the growth of obsessive-compulsive phenomena -- including personality features or symptoms -- and impulse control disorders -- at the other extreme of the spectrum -- in patients with Parkinson's disease were frequently reported. It was proposed that this association could be other proof of the role of basal ganglia in the chara

Duncan et al. reviewed the response to growth hormone stimulation testing after priming in peripubertal children. The concern is that there is little research documenting the response to growth hormone treatment in patients with sex hormone primed growth hormone stimulation testing and those unprimed. The controversy about priming or not can be summarized as follows: if one wants to know if the production of growth hormone during puberty will be adequate in terms of peak growth hormone responses then stimulation with priming should be done.

Coeliac disease (CD) is a genetically determined gluten-sensitive enteropathy resulting in nutrient malabsorption, with an increasing incidence world-wide. Clinical presentation in early childhood may include classic malabsorption symptoms, whereas older CD children often present extra-intestinal symptoms including short stature and pubertal delay. A gluten-free diet (GFD) generally leads to a rapid catch-up in growth and to normalization of the pituitary function. The pathogenesis of CD-associated short stature is still unclear. Besides the involvement of the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like

Obesity is characterized by abnormal GH secretion, with GH levels reduced up to levels that are comparable to those found in adult patients with organic GH deficiency (GHD). Despite the marked GH insufficiency, obese patients with no evidence of pituitary disease have generally normal levels of total IGF-I but increased levels of free IGF-I. Although the mechanism of the low GH in obesity is not completely understood nor is it clear whether its relationship with visceral adiposity is causal, it is widely accepted that the low GH secretory state in obesity is reversible since it is completely r

Growth retardation is a common complication in children with chronic kidney disease. Treatable causes of growth retardation in these patients include renal osteodystrophy, metabolic acidosis, and inadequate nutritional intake. In addition, disturbances in the growth hormone-insulinlike growth factor I axis are a major cause of decreased growth. Administration of recombinant human growth hormone can overcome this problem, allowing catch-up growth and achievement of normal or improved adult height.

The growth hormone (GH) response to iv administration of GH-releasing hormone (GHRH, 0.3 microgram/Kg) was evaluated in 21 short children (13 boys and 8 girls, age 6.7-13.8 yr). Fourteen had familial short stature and/or constitutional growth delay, one had coeliac disease, and 6 were ultimately diagnosed as non-classical GH deficiency or neurosecretory dysfunction on the basis of subnormal integrated spontaneous GH concentrations (ICGH). The response was compared with 12-h spontaneous GH secretion measured every 30 min from 20:00 to 08:00. Mean ICGH ranged from 2.0-17.7 micrograms/l, with a m
