BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: There is increasing evidence to suggest that various growth factors play a crucial role in fetal lung growth and morphogenesis. An array of peptide growth factors regulate cell proliferation, differentiation, and various other cell functions in the developing lung. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of antenatal glucocorticoids administration on gene expression of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 in nitrofen-induced congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) in rats.

Metabolites of arachidonic acid have important regulatory functions within several areas of concern to the otolaryngologist. Prostaglandins, composing one group, are involved in smooth-muscle contraction, regulation of renal glomerular blood flow, and in the modulation of immune and allergic responses, inflammation, fever, pain, and tumor growth. A second group, the leukotrienes, may be even more important than prostaglandins in allergy and inflammation. The elusive slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis belongs in this group. Two other metabolites, thromboxane and prostacyclin, seem to be cri

(1) Human insulin-like growth factor type 1 (IGF-1) is the main effector of growth hormone action. Primary IGF-1 deficiency is a rare disease, mainly resulting in very short stature; (2) Mecasermin is a recombinant IGF-1 marketed for this indication as a twice daily subcutaneous injection; (3) Clinical evaluation is mainly based on a non-comparative follow-up study of 76 children with an average age of 7 years, some of whom were treated for 8 years. The mean height at treatment initiation was 6.7 standard deviations below normal. Eight years later, it was 5.2 standard deviations below normal,

Placenta growth factor type 1 (PIGF-1) can be synthesized by neoplastic cells in an alternative form (PIGF-2) by the addition of basic amino acids to its classic sequence. Here we show that the basic residues of PIGF-2 compete for the binding of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to heparan sulfate proteoglycans of the cell surface and extracellular matrix. In doing so, PIGF-2 basic sequences inhibit the sequestering of VEGF and bFGF and maintain them in a highly diffusible form, thus enhancing their angiogenic effect. In agreement with these in

Ovarian folliculogenesis is a dynamic and complex process during which follicles undergo tremendous growth and maturation. Beginning as a single layer of pregranulosa cells surrounding the immature oocyte, granulosa cells actively proliferate and differentiate until the time of ovulation. The proliferation of granulosa cells is necessary not only for follicular growth but also for creation of the unique micro-environment for oocyte maturation. Although the primary role of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in granulosa cell growth and function is well established, detailed mechanisms regulatin

Osteoblastic and chondroblastic (i.e., osteogenic) cells belong to the stromal cell system, which is associated with bone marrow, and bone and is separate from the hematopoietic stem-cell system. Stromal stem cells are capable of producing reticular, fibroblastic, osteogenic, and adipose stromal lines. Marrow-derived osteogenic cells are a component of marrow stroma, which in vitro form fibroblastic-type colonies. These colonies are a heterogeneous population with varying enzymatic expressions and potencies that differentiate into fibroblastic, reticular, adipocytic, and osteogenic populations

Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF beta) has been shown to influence the growth and differentiation of many widely varied cell types in vitro, including some that are endocrinologically active. We have investigated the previously unknown effects of this unique growth factor in the differentiated rat thyroid follicular cell line FRTL-5. The cells demonstrated specific, high affinity binding of TGF beta, and as with other epithelial cells, the growth of these thyroid follicular cells was potently inhibited by addition of TGF beta to the culture medium. TGF beta caused a significant reduction i

With increasing drug resistance, Candida infections have posed serious threats to public health. Photodynamic therapy harnesses light to destroy pathomycete, providing a smart strategy for combating of Candida infections. However, due to lack of organelle targeting ability and bad extracellular polymeric substances penetrability, current photosensitizers (PSs) are far from desirable to clean biofilms and fight against drug resistance. Herein, a mitochondrion targeting aggregation-induced emission PS, LIQ-TPA-TZ, was developed for the efficient photodynamic treatment of oral Candida infection.

Several polysaccharides extracted from seaweed have immunostimulatory effects. However, active substances from various diverse seaweeds should be identified to determine optimal immune stimulators. The dendritic cell (DC) activation ability of fucoidan extracted from Durvillaea antarctica (FDA) has been verified previously. However, the effect of FDA on the activation of natural killer (NK) cells that can directly kill tumor cells has not been studied. In this study, we investigated the effect of FDA in NK cell activation and examined its therapeutic effect on metastatic lung cancer. Intraperi

Climate change poses significant risks to food security and contributes to widespread soil degradation. Effective strategies are urgently needed to mitigate its impacts and ensure stable crop production and food quality. Biochar has shown strong potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance carbon sequestration, and immobilize soil contaminants such as heavy metals and organic pollutants. These benefits can lead to increased crop yields, improved nutritional quality, and reduced uptake of harmful substances by plants. This review summarizes the possible mechanisms through which biochar

Healtcare-associated infections have increased due to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of Gram-negative pathogens (GNPs) and the development of outbreacks over the past two decades. In this work, we investigated how exposure to positive electric pulses affects the growth characteristics of Klebsiella pneumonia (K. pneumonia), a common cause of pneumonia. We explored the impact of varying exposure frequencies (0.2-2 Hz) and time (15-90 min, at resonance frequency) on bioelectric signals produced during cell division, biofilm formation, and bacterial antibiotic susceptibility. The expansion of industry and the use of pesticides in agriculture represent one of the major causes of environmental contamination. Unfortunately, individuals and animals are exposed to these foreign and often toxic substances on a daily basis. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor the impact of such chemicals on human health. Several in vitro studies have addressed this issue, but it is difficult to explore the impact of these compounds on living organisms. A nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has become a useful alternative to animal models mainly because of its transparent body, fast growth, sh

The prevention of implant infections is a major challenge for implant developers and clinicians. Understanding biofilm dynamics and favorable implant or environmental characteristics will help to prevent biofilm formation. Blood-contact implants, such as cardiovascular implants, are particularly susceptible to infections as the blood provides a favorable growth environment for bacteria due to its rich supply of micro- and macro substances, such as glucose and plasma proteins. In this context, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterococcus faecalis are the most reported caus

The effect of Camellia sinensis (green tea) on the growth of Acanthamoeba castellanii trophozoites was examined using a microplate based-Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. C. sinensis hot and cold brews at 75% and 100% concentrations significantly inhibited the growth of trophozoites. We also examined the structural alterations in C. sinensis-treated trophozoites using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This analysis showed that C. sinensis compromised the cell membrane integrity and caused progressive destruction of trophozoites. C. sinensis also signifi

Soils can be contaminated with substances arising from anthropogenic sources, but also with natural bioactive compounds produced by plants, such as terpenes and flavonoids. While terpenes and flavonoids have received much less attention from research studies than metals, the effects that phytocompounds can have on soil organisms such as beneficial microorganisms should not be neglected. Herein we report the sole and combined exposure of Rhizobium to cadmium, to the monoterpene alpha-pinene and to the flavanol quercetin. A range of environmentally relevant concentrations of the phytocompounds w

Metal pollution in water and soil is an environmental and public health issue. Cadmium (Cd) is included in the list of priority hazardous substances in the European Water Framework Directive. Phytoremediation system is a cost-effective, plant-based approach that takes advantage of the ability of plants to concentrate elements and compounds from the environment and to metabolize various molecules in their tissues. We studied the presence and the importance of an invasive species, such as Lemna minuta, in the environment and the effects of Cd pollution on this species. Growth, removal, and toler

The objective of this work is to detect the mode of damage caused by Cr(III), one of the widely used industrial pollutant on Bacillus subtilis-industrial strain 168 and Escherichia coli MTCC 40. Bioassays are very sensitive, precise, economical and rapid for detecting early stages of pollution. The detrimental effect of trivalent chromium becomes clear from the growth profile and growth inhibition studies. Mode of action of damage by trivalent chromium in bacterial model was found to be oxidative, as chromium is one of the redox active metals. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) re

Astrocytes are important for normal brain functioning. Astrocytes are metabolic regulators of the brain that exert many functions such as the preservation of blood-brain barrier (BBB) function, clearance of toxic substances, and generation of antioxidant molecules and growth factors. These functions are fundamental to sustain the function and survival of neurons and other brain cells. For these reasons, the protection of astrocytes has become relevant for the prevention of neuronal death during brain pathologies such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and other neurodegenerat
