Demonstrates the effects of the said factors and interleukin-2 on the course of the fever and their role in a lethal outcome of the disease.

A 5' flanking region of the guinea pig liver transglutaminase gene was cloned and sequenced. The sequences for TATA box and potential binding sites of some regulatory factors were found in this region. The promoter activity of this region was shown by transfecting its fusion-construct with the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase gene into human hepatoblastoma HepG2 cells.

Skin reactivity in guinea pigs sensitized with 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDI) has been examined. For sensitization, guinea pigs were treated daily with a 10% TDI solution in ethyl acetate by intranasal application for 5 consecutive days. Local application of TDI onto the flank skin of these TDI-sensitized animals resulted in an immediate development of the flare-and-wheal reaction at the site of application. The clinical details of 2 patients from Papua New Guinea with obstructive sleep apnoea are described, and the principles of treatment of this condition are outlined. Sleep apnoea is likely to become an increasing problem in Papua New Guinea.

The in-vivo anti-allergic effect of N-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) in guinea-pigs passively sensitized with anti-ovalbumin rabbit serum has been studied. NANA (20 mg kg-1 i.v.) inhibited bronchial anaphylaxis and the release of histamine into bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. NANA dose-dependently inhibited heterologous passive cutaneous anaphylaxis and haemorrhaging in the passive Arthus reaction. However, it did not inhibit the release of histamine from sensitized minced lung tissue.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the leading cause of human nonhereditary congenital deafness. The pathogenesis of congenital CMV infection in the auditory system is poorly understood and no suitable animal model is currently recognized. Topical cyclosporine applied to the test site substantially inhibited the elicitation reaction of contact sensitivity in the guinea pigs previously sensitized with 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). The effect of the attenuated XJC13 and XJ0 strains of Junin virus (JV) was studied in guinea pigs infected before and during pregnancy.
