A Theory of Planned Behaviour Analysis of Barriers and Facilitators of Immediate Postpartum Contraception Uptake in Southwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Closely spaced pregnancies increase the risks of maternal and perinatal morbidity. Initiation of contraception in the immediate postpartum period offers a critical opportunity to address this unmet need during a window when women are in contact with health services. We explored barriers and facilitators of immediate postpartum contraceptive uptake at a tertiary hospital in southwestern Uganda, using the Theory of Planned Behavior. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study between August and December 2025 at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. Using purposive sampling,

Psychosocial well-being of adolescents and young adults living with chronic illness.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYA) living with chronic illness face substantial psychosocial challenges during key developmental transitions, and increasing numbers now receive care in adult hospitals. Yet adult services are often not youth-appropriate, and comparative data on psychosocial burden across disease groups in these settings are needed to guide service planning. AIM: To describe the psychosocial characteristics of AYA with chronic illness attending different specialist outpatient clinics to better understand their psychosocial well-being and burden of illness experience

Meeting report: CEPI workshop on Rift Valley fever epidemiology and modeling to inform human vaccine development, Nairobi, 4-5 June 2024.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic viral disease that causes epidemics and epizootics among humans and livestock, resulting in substantial health and socioeconomic consequences. Currently, there are no RVF vaccines licensed for humans, but several candidates show promise in early-stage development. Existing gaps in RVF epidemiological data and challenges associated with predicting RVF outbreak risk complicate the planning of efficacy studies, making the pathway to licensure for promising candidates unclear. In June 2024, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) convened a

Understanding transitional care programs for older adults who experience delayed discharge: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Many hospitalized older adults cannot be discharged because they lack the health and social support to meet their post-acute care needs. Transitional care programs (TCPs) are designed to provide short-term and low-intensity restorative care to these older adults experiencing or at risk for delayed discharge. However, little is known about the contextual factors (i.e., patient, staff and environmental characteristics) that may influence the implementation and outcomes of TCPs. This scoping review aims to answer: 1) What are socio-demographic and/or clinical characteristics of older

Rapid repeat pregnancy and experiences of interpersonal violence among low-income adolescents.

CONTEXT: Rapid repeat pregnancy (RRP) among adolescents, usually defined as pregnancy onset within 12-24 months of the previous pregnancy outcome, has frequently been the target of public health interventions, due to the exacerbation of negative consequences associated with recurrent adolescent pregnancy (and more specifically with childbearing). OBJECTIVE: To examine what, if any, relationship exists between RRP and the experience of interpersonal violence and abuse among low-income adolescents at one semi-urban health center. DESIGN: Case-control study using retrospective chart review. PA

Partner violence victimization and unintended pregnancy in Latina and Asian American women: Analysis using structural equation modeling.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health problem in the U.S., affecting nearly one in every three women over their lifetimes. Using structural equation modeling, we evaluated the association between IPV and unintended pregnancy, mediated by condom use and perceived spousal/partner support among Latina and Asian women. Data came from the 2002-2003 National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS). The analysis was restricted to married or cohabiting female respondents aged 18+ years (n = 1,595). Dependent variables included unintended pregnancy, condom use, and perceived part

Accessing modern contraceptive technologies in India.

The 'unmet' need for reproductive health care in India requires a wide demand net. Besides 'supply' of oral contraceptives, condoms and IUDs, the 'non-supply' approach for increasing contraceptive prevalence is recommended through education about the variety of safe contraceptives and awareness in the use of traditional methods. Expansion of education is partly responsible for the recent decline in fertility in India, however, gender inequality still prevails with poor sex ratio in urban regions, and deficit of around 35 million girls and women from higher mortality compared to males till the

Prioritization of zoonotic diseases in Bhutan through a One Health framework.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic diseases pose an increasing threat to human, animal and environmental health, and identifying the zoonoses of greatest public health concern is key to address them effectively. Despite high ongoing risks from zoonotic diseases, Bhutan has never conducted a zoonotic disease prioritization exercise. Therefore, the present study aimed to prioritize the top 10 zoonotic diseases in Bhutan and develop action plans to support targeted resource allocation, coordinated surveillance, and strategic planning through the One Health framework. METHODS: The current study used a literatur

Kinematic Correlates of Early Speech Motor Changes in Cognitively Intact APOE-ε4 Carriers: A Preliminary Study Using a Color-Word Interference Task.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia and a major public health challenge. In the absence of a cure, accurate and innovative early diagnostic methods are essential for proactive life and healthcare planning. Speech metrics have shown promising potential for identifying individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD, prompting investigation into whether speech motor features can detect elevated risk even prior to cognitive decline. This study examined whether speech kinematic features measured during a color-word interference task could distinguish cognitively

Evaluating an interactive tool that reasons about quality of life to support life planning by older people.

OBJECTIVES: In response to the lack of digital support for older people to plan their lives for quality of life, research was undertaken to co-design and then evaluate a new digital tool that combined interactive guidance for life planning with a computerised model of quality of life. METHOD: First, a workshop-based process for co-designing the SCAMPI tool with older people is reported. A first version of this tool was then evaluated over eight consecutive weeks by nine older people living in their own homes. Four of these people were living with Parkinson's disease, one with early-stage deme

Reimagining Data for Equity: Reaching the Unreached Map Explorer for Localized Public Health Intelligence in the Western Pacific Region.

Geographic information systems (GISs) and digital dashboards have become central to epidemic monitoring and crisis response, yet their broader potential for routine, equity-focused public health decision-making remains underused. As health systems increasingly prioritize reaching underserved and vulnerable populations, mapping platforms must evolve from static visualization tools to dynamic decision-support systems. This paper reflects on the development and strategic role of the Reaching the Unreached (RTU) map explorer, a regional geospatial decision-intelligence platform developed in collab

Critical interactions between Global Fund-supported programmes and health systems: a case study in Lao People's Democratic Republic.

In Lao PDR, investment by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has played an important role in scaling up the response to HIV and tuberculosis (TB). As part of a series of case studies on how Global Fund-supported programmes interact with national health systems, we assessed the nature and extent of integration of the Global Fund portfolios within the national HIV and TB programmes, the integration of the HIV and TB programmes within the general health system, and system-wide effects of Global Fund support in Lao PDR. The study relied on a literature review and 35 interviews

Home care clients: a research protocol for studying their pathways.

BACKGROUND: Enhancing non-clinical home care supports and services for older adults to live well is a strategic priority in developed countries, including Canada. Underpinning these supports and services are structures of care that are reflected in home care policies, programs and practices within jurisdictions. These approaches to care exist at multiple levels and inform interactions, perceptions, and care assessment, planning and provision, ultimately shaping the supports that are delivered. Jurisdictional differences in approaches to care mean that pathways through home care systems may dif
