Genetic hearing loss, caused by mutations in critical auditory genes, has seen promising advances through gene therapy, yet the temporal dynamics of early-stage auditory functional recovery and therapeutic transgene expression patterns following intervention remain uncharacterized in preclinical deafness models. This study systematically investigates the post-treatment progression of cochlear functional restoration and spatially resolved transgene expression kinetics in adult Vglut3 knockout (Vglut3 KO ) mice following adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated inner ear gene therapy. BACKGROUND: Auditory evoked potentials (AEPS) constitutes the most commonly used neurophysiological test to assess the functional development of the auditory brainstem in infants and allows the evaluation of hearing for high frequencies.
METHODS: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study was conducted. The AEPS results for 186 infants (372 ears) with a history of prematurity were examined. The bioelectrical response, morphology, amplitude, latencies I, III and V, and intervals I-III, III-V and I-V were compared, as well as auditory thresholds between two groups of

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the safety and efficacy of the 3 Food and Drug Administration-approved middle ear implant (MEI) systems … n hearing aid performance and MEI outcomes. Based on available data for patients with sensorineural hearing loss, functional gain and word recognition improvement seems similar between conventional hearing aids and MEIs, whereas patient-perceived outcome measures suggest that MEIs provide enhanced sound quality and eliminate occlusion effect.

Background Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental pollutants linked to adverse health effects. Recent epidemiological data suggest an association between PFAS exposure and hearing impairment, but underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined PFAS-induced auditory dysfunction using Ldlr-/- mice on a C57BL/6J background exposed for seven weeks to a mixture of five PFAS compounds (2 mg/L each) in drinking water. PFAS exposure significantly elevated hearing thresholds by 18-33 dB across multiple frequencies, indicative of auditory impairment. Functional

OBJECTIVE: This narrative review describes experimental animal models of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) caused by ototoxic agents.
BACKGROUND: SNHL primarily results from damage to the sensory organ within the inner ear or the vestibulocochlear nerve (cranial nerve VIII). The main etiology of SNHL includes genetic diseases, presbycusis, ototoxic agents, infection, and noise exposure. Animal models with functional and anatomic damage to the sensory organ within the inner ear or the vestibulocochlear nerve mimicking the damage seen in humans are employed to explore the mechanism and potentia

Hearing loss is the most common sensory disorder, causing substantial impacts on language development, literacy, mood, and cognition. Sensorineural hearing loss, caused by injury to the cochlear hair cells, cochlear nerve, or central auditory pathways, accounts for most cases of hearing loss. Existing therapies for sensorineural hearing loss include hearing aids and cochlear implants; however, these modalities have limited efficacy in noisy environments, variable hearing outcomes, and limited frequency discrimination. There are currently no Food and Drug Administration-approved cellular, molec

Hearing loss is a prevalent symptom of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a group of collagen type I-related skeletal disorders, commonly known as brittle bone disease. Clinical manifestation of hearing loss in OI often presents with stapes footplate fixation and hypodense foci in the otic capsule. However, the etiology and evolution of OI-hearing loss and its relation to bone abnormalities are still unknown. This study investigates the onset, severity, and progression of hearing loss in the homozygous oim mouse model of severe OI Type III, which is reported to exhibit hearing loss at 11-12 weeks o

Non-invasive extratympanic electrocochleography (ECochG) was performed in normal-hearing subjects and patients with sensorineural deafness. Action potential (AP) threshold, N1 input-output function, waveform, summating potential (SP) are presented. AP thresholds were within 15 dB in normal-hearing ears and within 30 dB in hearing-impaired ears above subjective thresholds for the click. Correlational analysis showed that click-evoked AP thresholds are best correlated to pure tone thresholds at 2 to 4 kHz. Four types of N1 input-output functions were classified. Normal functions appeared in mode

PURPOSE: Consistent hearing device use in young children with hearing loss is challenging for families. A hearing aid accessory, called a pilot cap, is often recommended to families to help mitigate the issues around device retention. Although pilot caps are commonly suggested to families, there is sparse data available about how acoustically transparent they are when used with a hearing aid. The purpose of this study was to measure the acoustic transparency when a hearing aid functions under a pilot cap accessory.
METHOD: The Verifit 2 Hearing Aid Analyzer and the Speech Intelligibility Inde

Recreational noise-induced hearing loss (RNIHL) is a significant factor contributing to hearing loss in young people. Its process is irreversible, and early symptoms are hidden. Therefore, early identification is of great significance. Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are commonly used to detect the function of outer hair cells. It is widely used for early diagnosis of occupational noise-induced hearing loss, but it remains underutilized in RNIHL detection. In order to explore the characteristics of RNIHL and the early detection value of different types of OAEs, this study reviewed the detection r

Although hearing loss in newborns and infants is predominantly due to malformations and infections, there are other situations which may compromise hearing quality in later stages, including posterior-fossa arachnoid cysts (ACs). We report the case of an 8-year-old girl who presented with hearing loss linked to a pontocerebellar-angle AC which had been diagnosed and treated when she was 14 months old. The pathophysiology of this late AC complication is discussed. This case reminds us that a close follow-up with audiologic monitoring and/or brain stem auditory evoked response is necessary in ch

OBJECTIVE: To describe three children in whom there had been major errors in the diagnosis of hearing loss.
CLINICAL FEATURES: In three children (two developmentally delayed, one not developmentally delayed) hearing thresholds obtained by behavioural testing were later proven wrong. This resulted in significant family distress and inappropriate educational approaches.
INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: Electrocochleography and brainstem audiometry were performed, demonstrating normal cochlear function. Simultaneous microinspection of the ears gave information about current or old middle ear disease a

Hearing loss is the third most prevalent chronic health condition affecting older adults and age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is the most common form of hearing impairment. Significant sex differences in hearing have been documented in humans and rodents. In general, the results of these studies show that men lose their hearing more rapidly than women. However, the cellular mechanism underlying sex differences in hearing or hearing loss remains largely unknown, and to our knowledge, there is no well-established animal model for studying sex differences in hearing. In the current study, we exami

Purpose Data from standardized caregiver questionnaires indicate that children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) frequently exhibit atypical auditory behaviors, including reduced responsivity to spoken stimuli. Another body of evidence suggests that prenatal alcohol exposure may result in auditory dysfunction involving loss of audibility (i.e., hearing loss) and/or impaired processing of clearly audible, "suprathreshold" sounds necessary for sound-in-noise listening. Yet, the nexus between atypical auditory behavior and underlying auditory dysfunction in children with FASDs remains

BACKGROUND: Auditory agnosia for environmental sounds is a type of agnosia attributed to central auditory dysfunction. It is common in Alzheimer's disease, and is associated with peripheral hearing loss, although independent of it, and presumed independent of language deficits. The effects of this type of agnosia on daily life in Alzheimer's disease are unknown.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the impact of auditory agnosia for environmental sounds in people with Alzheimer's disease while also exploring the role of unrecognized hearing loss.
METHODS: We tested 34 home-dwelling people with Alzh
