Psychological distress and mental health care utilization among lesbian, gay, and bisexual survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer.

PURPOSE: Survivors of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer face significant psychological distress and encounter barriers accessing mental health care. However, limited research exists on psychological health among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) survivors of AYA cancer, particularly in comparison with heterosexual survivors and LGB individuals without a history of cancer. METHODS: Using the National Health Interview Survey (2013-2018), we identified LGB survivors of AYA cancer, LGB individuals without a history of cancer, and heterosexual survivors of AYA cancer. Sociodemographic, chroni

College Student Social Network Characteristics and Alcohol Use: Differences (and Similarities) Based on Sexual Identity and Attraction.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual minority college students have higher alcohol use and alcohol-related consequences than heterosexual students. Peers are salient determinants of young adult drinking, and examining social network characteristics is useful for understanding peer influence. This study used social network methods to understand network characteristics, alcohol use (i.e., maximum drinks), and alcohol consequences of sexual minority and heterosexual college students. METHOD: Sexual minority and heterosexual junior-year college students (N = 1,150) were compared on (a) social network features (eige

The Association of LGBTQ-Supportive School Health Policies and Practices with Sexual Health Outcomes.

Purpose: We examined the association of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ)-supportive school policies and practices with sexual health outcomes among LGB and heterosexual students. Methods: The 2014 and 2016 School Health Profiles data from principals and lead health educators from 117 high schools in 16 local education agencies across the United States assessed LGBTQ-supportive school policies and practices (e.g., having a gay/straight alliance or similar club). The 2015 and 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey data from 75,638 students from the same schools assessed sexu

Does Sexual Orientation Complicate the Relationship Between Marital Status and Gender With Self-rated Health and Cardiovascular Disease?

A substantial body of work has demonstrated the importance of marital status for health, yet the vast majority of this work has studied heterosexual marriages and relationships. To understand the role of marital status in shaping health among heterosexual, lesbian, gay, and bisexual men and women, we examine data from a probability-based sample of adults living in 40 U.S. states for selected years between 2011-2015. We test two physical health outcomes-poor-to-fair self-rated health and cardiovascular disease-and present predicted probabilities and pairwise comparisons from logistic regression

Heterosexist microaggressions, student academic experience and perception of campus climate: Findings from an Italian higher education context.

While overt instances of harassment and violence towards LGBQ+ individuals have decreased in recent years, subtler forms of heterosexism still shape the social and academic experience of students in higher education contexts. Such forms, defined as microaggressions, frequently include environmental slights that communicate hostile and derogatory messages about one's sexual-minority status. However, there is some evidence suggesting that environmental microaggressions have deleterious effects on all students, regardless of their sexual orientation. The aim of the current study was to examine ho

Contraceptive use by women across different sexual orientation groups.

OBJECTIVES: To examine contraceptive methods used across sexual orientation groups. STUDY DESIGN: We collected data from 118,462 female participants in two longitudinal cohorts-the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) 2 (founded in 1989, participants born 1947-1964) and NHS3 (founded in 2010, born 1965-1995). We used log-binomial models to estimate contraceptive methods ever used across sexual orientation groups and cohorts, adjusting for age and race. RESULTS: Lesbians were the least likely of all sexual orientation groups to use any contraceptive method. Lesbians in NHS2 were 90% less likely than he

STD coinfections in The Netherlands: Specific sexual networks at highest risk.

BACKGROUND: Specific subpopulations infected with multiple bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) may facilitate ongoing STD transmission. To identify these subpopulations we determined the extent of concurrent incident STD infections and their risk factors among the high-risk population seen at Dutch STD clinics. METHODS: STD surveillance data submitted routinely by STD clinics to the National Institute for Public Health on demographics, sexual behavior, STD testing, and diagnoses for the period 2004-2007 were analyzed. RESULTS: Bacterial STD coinfections were diagnosed concurrently

Opting out increases HIV testing in a large sexually transmitted infections outpatient clinic.

OBJECTIVES: In January 2007, opt-out HIV testing replaced provider-initiated testing at the sexually transmitted infections (STI) outpatient clinic in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The effect of the opt-out strategy on the uptake of HIV testing was studied and factors associated with refusal of HIV testing were identified. STUDY DESIGN: Data routinely collected at the STI clinic were analysed separately for men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexuals. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with opting out. RESULTS: In 2007, 12% of MSM and 4% of heterosexuals

Herpes simplex virus-2 may increase susceptibility of the sexual transmission of hepatitis C.

OBJECTIVES: Antibodies against herpes simplex viruses-1 and -2, cytomegalovirus, and syphilis were determined in six heterosexual couples with strong indications of having sexually transmitted hepatitis C virus infection and in 17 other heterosexual couples in which one partner was hepatitis C virus viremic (source partner), but the other had remained hepatitis C virus uninfected (exposed partner). STUDY DESIGN: Antibody testing was done with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Anti-herpes simplex virus 2 and anti-hepatitis C virus findings were further confirmed by immunoblotting. Hepatiti

Injunctive substance use norms among substance-naïve youth in the United States: Differences by sexual identity and sex assigned at birth.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority (SM) youth are more likely than heterosexual youth to engage in substance use. Injunctive norms, or perceptions of others' substance use attitudes, contribute to youth substance use initiation and progression. METHODS: Among substance-naïve youth (ages 12-17; N = 7628) in the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we examined differences in perceived parental, close friend, and personal disapproval of cigarette smoking, marijuana experimentation, monthly marijuana use, and near-daily alcohol use across five sexual identity groups (heterosexual, gay, bisexual,

Multiple mediation analyses on exercise addiction and muscularity-oriented eating in young adults.

Disordered eating and exercise behaviors may co-occur with muscle dysmorphia. This study investigates potential psychological mediators (psychological distress, weight self-stigma, drive for muscularity, drive for leanness) of the relationships between muscle dysmorphia and exercise addiction and muscularity-oriented eating in young Taiwanese individuals. We also examined whether these mediating effects differed by sex and sexual orientation. A cross-sectional sample of 1500 young adults (Mage = 22.3 years, 38.3 % male) participated in an anonymous online survey. We performed mediation analyse

Sexual Minority Identity and Risky Alcohol Use: the Moderating Role of Aggressive Behavior.

Adolescent alcohol use has significant consequences for concurrent and longitudinal health and wellbeing, with sexual minority youth consistently reporting higher levels of alcohol use than their heterosexual peers. Understanding how individual-difference variables like aggressive behavior are associated with variability in sexual minority adolescents' higher levels of alcohol use offers novel theoretical insight into this vulnerability. The 81,509 participants were drawn from the Profiles of Student life: Attitudes and Behavior Study. They were ages 14-17 years (M = 15.38, SD = 1.09) and 50.1

Changing Epidemiology of Gonorrhea in Adelaide, South Australia.

BACKGROUND: Gonorrhea is a significant public health concern. The changing epidemiology of gonorrhea in Australia has highlighted the need for detailed examination of surveillance data to determine population groups at greatest risk for infection. METHODS: We analyzed deidentified gonorrhea notification data for the years 2012 to 2017, in Adelaide (N = 3680), calculating age-adjusted notification and antibiotic resistance rates. Age, gender, year, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status were assessed for associations with gonorrhea notifications using negative binomial, log binomial and

Fraternal Birth Order, Family Size, and Male Homosexuality: Meta-Analysis of Studies Spanning 25 Years.

The fraternal birth order effect is the tendency for older brothers to increase the odds of homosexuality in later-born males. This study compared the strength of the effect in subjects from small versus large families and in homosexual subjects with masculine versus feminine gender identities. Meta-analyses were conducted on 30 homosexual and 30 heterosexual groups from 26 studies, totaling 7140 homosexual and 12,837 heterosexual males. The magnitude of the fraternal birth order effect was measured with a novel variable, the Older Brothers Odds Ratio, computed as (homosexuals' older brothers

Standard symptom- and sexual history-based testing misses anorectal Chlamydia trachomatis and neisseria gonorrhoeae infections in swingers and men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Currently, individuals at risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are tested extragenitally only if indicated, most often when there is a history of self-reported symptoms or self-reported anal sex. The sensitivity of such selective symptom- and sexual history-based testing for detection of anorectal STD has not been determined. METHODS: All men having sex with men (MSM) and swingers (heterosexual couples who have sex with other heterosexual couples and their self-identified heterosexual sex partners) attending our STD clinic (consults: n = 1690) from January 2010 until Febr

Same-sex sexuality and quality of life: findings from the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study.

This study assessed differences in quality of life (QL) between homosexual and heterosexual people and attempted to identify factors accounting for observed differences. Data were collected in a representative sample of the Dutch population aged 18-64 (N = 7,076). Classification as heterosexual or homosexual was based upon reported sexual behavior in the preceding year; 84.8% of the total sample (N = 5,998) could be classified: 2.8% of 2,878 sexually active men and 1.4% of 3,120 sexually active women had had same-sex partners. Differences in QL were tested by analysis of variance. Factors acco

Anogenital non-gonococcal neisseriae: prevalence and clinical significance.

Over a 13-year period non-gonococcal neisseriae (NGN) were isolated from 114 of 88,670 patients (0.13%) screened for anogenital gonorrhoea at a Genitourinary Medicine Unit. During the same period there were approximately 9000 anogenital gonococcal infections (10%). The prevalence of NGN was 0.09% (27/31,500) in women, 0.04% (20/52,800) in heterosexual men and 1.5% (67/4370) in homosexual men: the differences in prevalence between women and heterosexual men (P < 0.01) and between heterosexual patients and homosexual men (P < 0.001) are highly significant. Neisseria meningitidis was isolated mos

Voluntary testing to measure HIV prevalence in sexually transmitted disease clinics.

Voluntary HIV testing was used to study the extent of HIV-1 infection in patients attending sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics in England and Wales between 1985 and 1990. Homosexual and bisexual men and 10-20% of heterosexual men and women were invited to complete a study record and have an HIV-1 antibody test. The rate of newly diagnosed HIV-1 infection was higher in homosexual and bisexual men than in heterosexual clinic attenders. It was also higher in patients attending clinics in the South East compared with those attending clinics in other regions. From 1988 onwards, HIV infectio
